Would anyone trade their 19" Sport wheels for 18" Aeros?

Hi,

I have been offered a car with 18" Aero wheels in lieu of my elusive LRAWD with 19" Sport wheels. I have read some posts where others are being offered cars with 19" Sport wheels that they do not necessarily want. If anyone would like to trade wheels (and perhaps some cash?), then I would be up for that. Please message me if you are interested or know someone who would be.

It sounds like they’re pumping out the Unicorn Combo with black innards at the moment. There really can’t be long left for the white - absolutely the last combo left standing, surely.. so I really don’t think it will be long. I’d wager a week or two behind us at the most - I’d hang on in there. You’ll have the car for ages, so while it’s frustrating.. stick with it..
 
Surely you can't just do that? What about brakes and systems that measure speed based on circumference?

I have not done the exact maths, but the change in rim size will offset by change in profile leading to different sidewall height. It will all work out to be close enough, in the same way as things are close enough during the lifetime of a tyre due to wear.

Rolling distances are very inexact, often quite a few % out and changes with tyre wear.

1. the tire circumference is almost the same
2. there is a software setting to address the minor difference. You would have access to that at home if you have 2019.32.1 or newer, but can have a service center do it for you if you have an older firmware and don't want to upgrade your firmware (like maybe your username is sorka ;)).

also systems like ABS and Stability Control do it wheel vs wheel, not wheel vs specs. Assuming you change all 4 wheels, then speedometer and energy usage graphs are what would be most affected.

There are plenty of examples of owners switching for aftermarket wheels of all three rim size (18", 19" and 20"). Also switching out the 18" Aero for 19" Sport and even the car graphic on the interior display updates.

The only thing which is tricky/unadvisable is swapping 20" from the P+ for the 19" or 18" due to the larger red brake callipers. However, even this is possible with some sort of spacers/specialist intervention.

Thanks @jimmymc . I noticed that too. You are absolutely right about holding on, but I have just been offered a P- and I may well go for it. I'm also considering dropping FSD to wait for an improvement in the UK. In a year or so I'll pop some alternative aftermarket 19" wheels on, perhaps when my tyres have worn out or if I find someone willing to trade wheels!

Then, when FSD is worth it (in the UK) I'll pop that on also. Even if the price has risen by a few k, at least I'd know I am paying for something useful and worth the money. If I lived in the USA I'd probably stick with FSD right now.

Have you pushed Tesla on this or did they approach you with the option to swap? How has this come about?

When you buy the car with 19 inch alloys does it mean that those alloys are linked to the car in paper work form or something ....
I was just thinking from a stolen point of view really...you don't want alloys PAIRED to another car for example - personally can't see how that would be a problem anyway !

It will be on the original invoice what wheels you have I believe, this is also going to be classed as a modification as far as insurance companies are concerned.

...When you buy an APPLE device the lightning cable does not have a serial number (wheels won't have a serial number) so apart from any suspension changes should be okay.Ask SC parts for a quote on original Tesla 19" [email protected]

Not meant to be clever, I don't think that the wheels will come with a serial number on the invoice, I meant if you order 19s then it will show on the invoice as 19s incase you wanted them replacing if your car was stolen.

If you were to buy them afterwards say even from Tesla direct I'd think insurance companies may class this as a modification as it didn't come out the factory that way. Whether that is enforced by anyone is another matter especially considering the amount of used cars on the roads with aftermarket alloys
 
I think wheels are treated just like tyres insofar as insurance is concerned. You would have to insure them as an itemised addition to the car if you expected the insurance company to replace them like-for-like. Otherwise, they will just payout on the wheels the car originally came with. I once wrote off two 20" wheels and two tyres on a pot-hole. The Mercedes dealership replaced the wheels and tyres and amazingly covered the cost because I had some sort of wheel and tyre insurance at the time. If they were gold plated, I am pretty sure I wouldn't have gold plated wheel replacements paid for!

What a great video!! Thanks for posting that. I'd seen the one he did after hitting that pothole but I didn't realise he had posted this one. Great in-depth explanation about swapping wheels on a Model 3. I still think the 19" would be the perfect compromise between aesthetics and practicality, for me anyway. But this also makes me feel better about having the 18" wheels on a P- Model 3.

So, in summary, you cant put the OEM 18" or 19" on the P+ (with the bigger brake callipers), but you can find aftermarket 18" and 19" wheels which will fit perfectly. Not that I'll have that problem as the P- only has the standard brakes and suspension.

That reminds me, I should consider getting a spoiler.
