Opinion pieces headlined with a question always strike me as rather impotent.
It's clicky, since they get internet points for mentioning Elon Musk and Tesla in the opening.
I think the author correctly frames this about the relative safety of humans behind the wheel now vs computers in the near future.
I wish they distilled down the specifics of regs that Congress is giving the industry a pass on.
My takeaway is that this is hugely consequential technology.
Our Congress is trusting corporations to not be harmful while cutting the budgets of NHTSA and DOT.
It's "trust but don't verify".

As always, using the comments section of a clickbait article as a kind of funhouse mirror on public opinion is the best part. Seems like the times editors really scored on this one considering the amount of dialog that they generated. I'm sure their advertisers will be pleased.
