38k seems like a good price, the battery pack is almost worth that alone. It'd be fun to take the tesla powertrain and slap it in something else. Something still small but a little more practical, maybe like a mazda3. Easier said than done of course.

While 't***a' probably does mean 'tesla', I can't help but wonder why Tesla Motors would use their own name as a handle. On the other hand, why would they keep it a secret? But in fact, it might just be some guy who really wants a Roadster.

If it is Tesla Motors, I like the opinion that they are buying back crashed cars for forensic purposes. It's probably also possible that this would be a way for them to set a "reserve" of sorts, so someone doesn't buy it cheap and Bondo it up.

I could probably find out through 'connections'. But that would be wrong and I'm not going there.

Spare parts perhaps. Maybe their new mechanics need to train taking things apart and putting them back together again.
