X DELIVERY AND REVIEW - Family with 3 kids

Hi All -

Took delivery with the family in tow (ages 7, 5, 20 months) in San Diego. Coming to that center is like coming home as we know all of the people well and they know we've been waiting for this day for >3 years. Where to start??? We are current Model S owners so I write these comments from the vantage point of someone that has already experienced Tesla heaven for 3 years. With that said, this car exceeds all possible expectations. Elon was not using hyperbole when he said things like the seats being a "thing of sculptural beauty" or that people will love this product more than anything they have ever purchased. This car truly is 50 years ahead of its time. For the folks that said "meh" I really can't comprehend that. If you are into Sci-Fi this is like visiting the Starship Enterprise and saying "the warp drive colors were not as cool as I expected".

Also, it drives like it's on rails, it makes my 2013 P+ feel lumbering, and the view and overall driving experience is indescribable. The kids are all in shock as well and love the glass roof and huge windshield. We got the 7 seat version which we need because of the kids and it is still comfortable for me to sit in the 3rd row (6 foot). The second row seats move forward quickly and simply EVEN when a car seat is attached. We got the white interior and it is stunning in appearance.

Car fits perfectly in our garage with the S (will upload pic) and the falcon doors open fully. We have a regular house, not a mansion, so I expect everyone will have no problem with the size. Honestly didn't find it to be too large. Smaller than the Buick Enclave that the X replaced.

I plan on updating this thread with more pics this weekend of some of the amazing features of this car from the space-age dome lights that you can turn on and off with a finger swipe to the beautiful lighted USB outlet in the third row.

Also, planning on many adventures similar to what we had with the S (http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/show...y-adventure-Frozen-stranded-but-loads-of-fun-).

Great to hear - thanks for the post, thoughts and pictures. I have three kids of similar ages and got the 7 seat for same reason. Hope to take delivery in 7-10 days and am super excited. I also have a 3 year old Model S, so very similar situation. Appreciate any updates you have once you've had some time to drive. Enjoy and congrats!

Awesome! 3 kids here too (8, 6 & 4). Went with white seats too. We are a little nervous about the seats, to glad to hear the positive review. We take delivery Wednesday. Just a little excited... Thanks for sharing!

I am a Model S owner as well and I just picked up my X last night. It really is amazing... Just make sure you inspect well... I had some things that needed to be attended to. Over all my only issues are I think its a bit small compared to the S for storage. Also, the front drivers auto open door is a bit buggy... One out of 10 times it only opens a few inches... I'm nitpicking... It is an engineering marvel!!!

I was also surprised. The windshield ended up being my favorite thing... I now spend my red light time watching clouds.

That and the warp speed!

I now own a rollercoaster Its a beautiful thing...

Agree with you Michael! Went to IKEA last night and could fit everything in the frunk, but it still is not as roomy as the vintage model S frunk. Whether or not the trunk is bigger than the S trunk is debatable (with seats folded down). What is clear is that the X feels far more roomier for passengers because of the height difference. Also, my auto present doors do not work either. Our great delivery specialist gave me some tips on how to fix them so I'll try that today. Also, this is probably a software thing but I miss being able to see the real time energy meter that I had in the X. All I have on the right side of the dashboard is data on energy used since last charge, etc. I can't figure out how to make the speedometer-looking graph to appear. My issues are really all fixable with a software update and do not diminish my overflowing joy with the car.

More impressions: As others have said, the Falcon doors are pretty much like bringing Taylor Swift with you everywhere. As soon as they come out the crowds everywhere lose their mind. If you really hate attracting attention you will not like the X. The car is supposedly really heavy but it doesn't feel that way at all. I'm happy that we went with 20" wheels as I scraped a curb ever so slightly and only touched rubber. On my 21" S it would have curb-rashed. I'm sure the 22" would have been the same. For a family vehicle the diminished range and constant worrying about curb-rash are not worth the great look.

Regarding the seats it would be nice in a software update to be able to adjust the 2nd row seat position from the drivers seat. Regarding road noise, it's not quieter than my S which is not surprising as it's probably an engineering impossibility to remove road noise with a windshield that large.

The doors do make loading and unloading much easier. It's clear that someone with 5 kids was involved in the design. The doors allow me to get right in with minimal contortion when I need to adjust seatbelts, etc. It takes some getting used to as you still bend down out of habit at the beginning as if there is a roof there.

Biodefense mode is really good. There was a terrible smell and we put it on and it was gone immediately. It's also fun to explain to the kids that if the world ends we need to evacuate to the X because it will be the safest spot left on Earth.

Regarding range so far it looks like it will average out to be the same or slightly below that of my P85 (as expected).

Finally, heres a pic of the X-with falcon door fully opened in our standard size garage.

Quick question. It looks like the FWD photo has the door open but not with one of the garage door rails above it. I continue to be concerned the FWDs won't open in my standard size garage without hitting the door rails. We shall see.

Looks like a great car. One question, I too will have a MS and an MX in a "standard" garage. I measured my garage door to be 16'. It looks like there is plenty of room between the two cars. If you dont mind, what does your garage door measure (looks like mine actually). Thanks

Just got home and measured it's exactly 16 feet!

also I'm pleased to report after our Costco run that the frunk of the X has a "mini-microwave" towards the nose rather than the passenger compartment. Perfect for fitting a small diaper bag for instance. I can post a pic if anyone wants.

More little details from the past few days:

1. The USB chargers in the front are definitely more powerful than my S. That was a big complaint I had especially when you have low power and need a quick boost for your phone or iPad.

2. The deep trunk well is quite cavernous and can hold an insane amount of stuff. All together (including space under second row), the storage capacity is probably more than a RWD model S with big frunk.

3. The wife misses the map lights from the S. This seems like an oversight as the dome lights don't illuminate that area.

4. The visors with lighted mirror are awesome

5. Daylight running lights need to be added over SW update. Currently the only way to keep the super cool DRL white strip on is to turn on parking lights which I do.

6. The more you use them the more it's hard to believe that any company actually built this car with FWDs. They are an engineering marvel and like the self-presenting door handles of the S they really make the car. I disagree with those that said "give me the X without FWD in 2014 instead of waiting this long". Worth the wait. If I had the time I would just open and close them over and over for a day while eating popcorn.

7. Looking forward to SW update to get auto presenting and auto closing doors to work. No big deal and not in any rush.

Congrats on the beautiful car! I'm sure you're aware, but doesn't hurt to repeat it: in that situation you have pictured (where Falcons have been opened while garage door is closed), don't open the garage door. In fact I would suggest don't even put it into the situation you have pictured. If another household member has a garage door opener and is just coming home, they could try to open the door from the outside not knowing what's going on inside.

Model X is in Range Mode. These lights can not be turned on and off."

I'm sure you're aware, but doesn't hurt to repeat it: in that situation you have pictured (where Falcons have been opened while garage door is closed), don't open the garage door. In fact I would suggest don't even put it into the situation you have pictured. If another household member has a garage door opener and is just coming home, they could try to open the door from the outside not knowing what's going on inside.
