Y vs Cyber

I can't believe I'd be the only one cross shopping these, but I didn't see a thread for it.

Anyway, this has now become an unexpected decision point for my family. I was not expecting the pickup to be so darned practical, with the air suspension, awesome suspension travel, seating for 6 (ok, this was expected), ramp, so much secure storage, durability, massive towing, and craziest of all, its lower price than the Y.

Advantages for the Y: easier to park, dog in back is inside, comes ~18 months earlier... ?

I'd been planning on the Y as my next car since the idea of it really started to get traction back in 2017, but now I'm not so sure.

If there'll be an equivalent to the Stealth Performance 3 made for the Y this might get a little easier...

Anyone else feeling similarly? Other advantages/disadvantages?

Can't believe only one cross shopping? I don't even see the need for the thread. Apples and oranges. I like both.
Of course, I am not poo-pooing on the thread. Its no different that hundreds of other even less necessary threads.
And I had two minutes between Man from High Castle episodes to write this post - hence the reason for my comment.

Id be in the same boat if I didn't need a car at the end of 2020. My intent for the Y is a family camping car, and it fits the bill with a roof rack and a trailer hitch with bikes... The truck would be a much better fit but my lease is up next year and I need to replace it, so the extra wait is a no go.

Cyber is more versatile, cheaper,, just too big as a commuter vehicle..
Yep, too big as a city vehicle at all. Model X is already too big. At least the Cybertruck is a bit (1.7") narrower, but it's 2' 9.4" longer!?!?! I don't think it'd fit in our garage, and it definitely wouldn't fit in our driveway, so we'd have no way to charge it w/o running a charging cord out to the street.

I was ready to buy the Cybertruck before the reveal. Just can’t get around the looks of it. I’ve marked it off the list. Ihad originally thought of the Rivian R1T, but with the road trips I’ve done over the last 18 months on the Supercharger network, that may not be practical. Really considering a Y and a small utility trailer now to replace my Model 3 and the aging gas pickup that rarely gets driven any more.

Choices, choices....

I hear this general comment often in different threads/reddit/etc about "Why buy a Model Y when the Cyber Truck is cheaper" which on the surface makes sense. The CT is more capable in many ways, but is lacking in areas that people seem to be glossing over.
  1. Looks - I'm sorry I just can't get on board with the look of the CT. It's just repulsive to me. Of course that my opinion, people are free to do what they want, but to me, that's a huge problem.
  2. Continuation of the above - I want a color other than silver or black.
  3. "Seats 6" - Yes, by effectively having a new-age front bench seat. I love my armrest and have absolutely no interest in having any of my passengers cramping my space as I drive on a road trip. Short jaunt around town, sure not an issue, but if you're going on a long trip I definitely want my own space.
  4. It's huge! Parking that thing in tight parking lots or parking garages will not be fun. Not an issue to everyone, but for my situation in a tight commuter-train parking lot, I already find it snug in my Model 3, I can't imagine trying to wedge a CT into a tight spot.
  5. Road trip charging - I have no doubt it will charge at SCv3 rates (250kW) and I think it will need to, as I expect it will be 400w/mi (which to be 100% clear is total speculation on my part). That's about 60% less efficient than the Model 3, meaning the battery will be huge. If 400w/mi proves accurate 250mi = 100kWh, 300mi = 120kWh, and 500mi = 200kWh. That is a lot of capacity to fill up!
For many the CT seems like a slamdunk, which is good for them, but for me it misses the mark. Ideally I'd love a 3 row, Model X sized SUV, with the Model 3/Y battery tech and normal freaking doors.

My guess is the energy usage for the truck will be comparable to Raven MX. Elon has said weight for the CT will be equal to a F-150. I am very confident the batteries they will be using for the CT are not in use today and will be superior

Fair points
1: Looks are always subjective
2:I believe it can be wrapped to be any color you want
3: to me it looks like it seats 6 more comfortably than the Y can possibly seat 7, and when seating 5 or fewer it seems to have more space
4: no argument - besides the extra year+ wait this is my main concern. Only caveat is that you no longer need to worry about others dinging you.
5: Elon definitely said it charges at over 250kW - to be announced later. Since the mid range 3 is now up to 200kW, I'm guessing the Tri could see north of 500kW once the superchargers themselves can hit it (that would be the same C rate just applied to the bigger pack -no further battery advancement needed)

Pickup trucks in North America have become the new SUV - mostly a family vehicle that offers room and convenience at the expense of (in ICE versions) wasting gas and room on the road for everyone else! Sure, there are many that need a workhorse pickup every day so they have their place, but I see a lot of single drivers using them as a commuter car and trying to squeeze into mall and grocery parking spots.

I don't have the need for a truck 90% of the time, so I choose Model Y and can rent from U-Haul when needed ;-)

With the roller door closed, the dog in the Vault is inside, too - especially if there’s an option for an opening rear window or to remove the window.

Yeah, it’s definitely an interesting twist. For anyone except a family with two very small kids who need to move five other people at the same time the Cybertruck will have more interior space, with far more capability for less money.

But it will be a handful to maneuver and park in urban and more crowded suburban environments. That and the subjective looks question seem like the only real downsides to the Cybertruck (along with marginally higher costs for tires and electricity, of course, but neither is likely to be enough difference to matter for most people.)

Cross-shopping here, too. I just signed my model 3 24 month lease, so i’ll have a little more wiggle room to see how this plays out. I’m stoked no matter which one i land in though!

I love EVs because of it's simplicity-been driving since 2016-never been to gas station, dealers & mechanics. But CT is a game changer in a big way don't need to worry about dent, scratch etc. If Elon keeps his word and make a smaller trim that fits the garage-I'll take it.

If they made a smaller version or a mid-size SUV version of this...I would be all over it. Unfortunately the current version is just too big for my needs and wouldn't fit in my garage which is a deal breaker.

I'm puzzled by claims that the CT won't dent or scratch. Not only can stainless both dent and scratch, it's very hard to fix. Just ask anyone who owned a DeLorean, or a stainless steel kitchen appliance for that matter.
