It's funny because this condition would never be accepted during PPAP process at any OEM, yet it's very common in production vehicles (all OEMs). DAB covers are a pain in the ass to produce with perfect appearance due to the critical safety nature of various dimensions which impact airbag deployment. The tear-seam has less thickness, as it's the point at which the cover breaks when the airbag deploys. Varying thickness between the tear-seam and the rest of the cover creates higher potential for variation in resin cooling rate which can create surface defects (more commonly sink marks). It's consider the most critical aspect of DAB covers, along with the outer gage points which impact horn function. Unfortunately, the service center is right, as if that condition exists, it's most likely inherent in the steel of the injection mold used by the supplier.

Is the cover the same as was used on the last gen S? Or shared with any other vehicles? Tesla could have carried over the tooling to save money. Condition is more common on molds with higher shot count as the steel wears and allows more room for plastic.
