So I part out Tesla cars and recently one of the screens was damaged. I decided to see if the SIM would work outside of the MCU. I purchased a modem off of Amazon that can support a SIM. The modem arrived and I plugged the SIM in and it works great. A whopping 12 Mbps though but not bad. The next test is to see if there is a data limit or throttling.

Probably. The device may be SIM locked, but that is usually by carrier, and I think Tesla uses AT&T anyway, if I recall.

My Audi used AT&T, but I swapped in a T-Mobile SIM for faster data and a cheaper plan. The device was not SIM-locked, so it worked with any carrier on compatible bands. Unlike Tesla, the SIM slot was easily accessible. It's a moot point though for legacy owners - since we don't pay for data, there's no motivation to change carriers unless AT&T is particularly horrible in your area.
