Your experiance ordering a Used Model X

Hi there. I was wondering if I could take a poll on what your process has been like ordering a used Model X. I understand everyone's situation is different so I wanted to poll and see what the different scenarios would be.

Some questions/topics for instance...
  • How long was the wait from the time you left the deposit to the time you picked up the car?
  • How long did it take to secure financing and insurance? How much do you pay in insurance?
  • What was the title/state transfer process like? Did Tesla assist in moving your license plates to the new(used) car?
  • If you did a pickup out of state were you still able to do a trade in in-state? (I live in CT but looking to pick up in GA. Can I trade in at a CT/NYC location and fly to GA?)
  • When you pick up out of state did you pay that state's sales tax or your own state's tax?
  • What was the pickup process like? Do you arrive and they simply hand the key over?
  • As you can only inspect the car from the images prior to purchase did anyone purchase and find out there was unpictured damage and/or features that did not work properly? What was Tesla's response?
I am just about 99% sure I am ready to buy but I am looking for the nudge here to pull the trigger. Thanks!

[We are still early in our experience, so please take this for what it is]

* So we just put the down payment, a few days ago
* Paying Cash
* They mail the title, according to my initial Tesla Contact named Christian - which you will generally receive 30 days after you drive home on your temp tags. (Research indicates YMMV on this one..)
* Ordered from Chicago area (Live in Michigan)
* Will let you know - as soon as we pick it up (we wanted to be down there this weekend, but.. see below)
* Again, will update with this info.

- So our experience so far has been OK- be aware of a couple things

* No test drives (no exceptions)
* No vehicle history beyond Carfax. (prior owner secret - eyes only)

Seems like when you get handed off to your delivery person, the communication dries up. At first, the experience is good - our initial advisor reached out right away, and has been excellent at answering questions. Then - like flipping a switch, as soon as the Delivery Advisor is assigned, and reaches out - all you seem to get is a canned response and zero answers to your questions, amid building excitement - quickly being tempered by realization that some of the horror stories may actually be true (and you cross your fingers)

Since the vehicle is relatively close by, and we are picking up on-site, the 'prep' should be quick (we were told in the canned response it may take 1-2 weeks for 'delivery'.) - but as I said, just after Jana introduced herself in the canned email - no response to our questions.

Have the $ ready to go, and can't get a response on whether we should be readying our family to head down this weekend, or if we are looking at one of the much maligned and ubiquitous 'delivery delays' where non-response and red tape interfere. Forum research really sort of points to a crap shoot - you have a 50/50 chance of a smooth transaction, or a bad one.

Tesla asks you to take a leap of faith in their process - but then doesn't really step up wthen it comes to comfort level / communication. At least that's been our experience so far.

We will update our experience (and post email messages if it helps) as to how it goes from here.

Actually heard back from the Delivery Advisor yesterday evening. Looks like we may be on track for a weekend delivery, but we find out tonight one way or the other. I take back all the bad I said about our delivery person (West Coast) and we are cautiously optimistic.
Ah! I am glad to hear I am not the only one experiencing the same thing. As soon as I was assigned a delivery specialist the communication with my Used Adviser simply dried up. I still email him to ask questions and what was an immediate response at all hours of the night now turns into 2-3day response times. Funny how that works.

In other news I have had the car for about 3 weeks now. I absolutely fell in love with it. Still rocking the temp Georgia tags on the car. I drove it back up to the NYC Metro area which was a solid 21hr drive including charging. I reached out to my used adviser 3 days ago regarding when I will receive the plate transfer and got no response. I will let you know how/when/if the plate transfer actually goes through. From my understanding Tesla will take care of moving the plate over with the DMV. Time will tell!

Another relevant point of conversation is the issues I found with the car. First was that it included the towing package but did not include the trailer hitch. They are including it but I have to drive to my local service center to pick it up. Other items that were missing that I have to pick up are the front sun shade, 2nd key fob, and wheel lock key. They were very helpful and said all 4 items are waiting at the service center for me to pick up. Two big issues in addition - the rear passenger side window takes about 45-60 seconds to go up. Crazy. Also there is a whistle noise coming from the driver side door when going 50mph+. Both issues I have an appointment for Dec 30th so I will keep you posted! Should be under the warranty.

I'm going through the same thing now picking up our preowned X. Everything is in place as far as I can tell but I have not gotten any communication from the Inside Delivery Adviser. I finally just called the service center (I'm in Houston but picking up the car in Dallas) and they finally gave me a response that they were still waiting on my tags and that my original pick up date would likely not hold.

Hi Pbs
Just wondering would it be recomended to buy a 2017 model X
warranty wise etc.
Absolutely.
You still get a 4 year 50,000 warranty based on the mileage at the time of pickup. My 2017 X (I assume) was a 2yr lease that was returned - I know many cars are. The car was in immaculate condition inside - they really scrub it down. There was actually wheel rim damage pictured at the time of purchase online that when I picked the car up in person was repaired!
The used purchasing process from a human and communication standpoint has plenty of room for improvement... but after the struggle for a week or two you have a great car for many years to come :)
Also I picked up the car in Georgia and drove it home in CT. Don't shy away from a good road trip to get acclimated to your new car! (vs the $2k delivery otherwise)

Just an update on our saga we purchased the used model X and our service advisor has been much less responsive. In fact we haven't been able to reach him since after the purchase I need help figuring out our laundry list of repairs that need to be done under warranty we've got the knocking rods under acceleration and a lot of other issues. it's hard to even nowhere to go or who to contact granted we're in Michigan and the redheaded stepchild but still very expensive car and kind of wandering lost as it's had to get it fixed. They sell a vehicle knowing for example that seat motors are dying and say we won't fix them here you have to schedule service and then when you need service everyone vanishes like a fart in the wind

Sorry for the horrible grammar and punctuation using speech to text

I am having the same experience. My used advisor emailed me constantly at all hours of the day/night during the purchase. After pickup they are just silent. I am having issues reaching anyone now regarding transferring my old plates. My advisor doesnt respond and I dont know who to contact...

I just took my used X into the service center last week for a laundry list of little repairs. 13 items were repaired, all covered under warranty. The service center is great in fixing your issues - My advice is to just contact them directly and not your used tesla advisor :)

Purchased mine in FL and drove it back to GA. The first time I have ever driven or sat in a moving Tesla was the moment I drove it out of the SC. It was an awesome experience.

Tesla gave me temporary FL tags that expired 30 days later and then they overnighted me another set of temporary tags. The GA tags showed up 3 days later. So 33-34 days to get permanent tags. I only paid GA state sales tax, which was a fiasco but worked out in the end. The mobile charger didn't work when I got home but drove to the nearby service center and they replaced it no questions asked.

The guy that was helping me look over the car at delivery said that they are all new sales people only and they all hate dealing with used deliveries. I would say this is true given his overall attitude. He ended up being nice at the end so no worries there.

I went through 3 SAs before I landed on one that would answer my questions in a timely manner and knew what they were talking about. Don't be afraid to ask for someone else if you feel you are getting the runaround on something.

The delivery specialist was terrible about responding to emails and his VM was full. Finally I figured out if I asked just one question at a time and placed it in the title of the email, I would get a response fairly quickly. My delivery took 2 weeks from time of order until I flew down and picked it up.

I absolutely love my vehicle and service has been great so far. Had a dead 12v that they quickly replaced with mobile service.

At first I hated the fact that I couldn't call the service department and talk to an assigned service person like I could at MB, but the Tesla system works and I'll accept the lack of communication in exchange for not having to interact with a dealership.

Looking at buying a used MS now and am already on my second SA due to the first having zero initiative to help get me into another Tesla. YMMV

Thanks Studio - so far we haven't had a ton of success getting them to pick up the phone - appreciate it anyway.

Use the app to enter and schedule your service request. Some maybe repairable at your home or office by mobile service. Others may require a service center visit. But in general, Tesla operations seemed focused on Millennial customers that prefer app over voice communication.

BTW, the knocking sound you are hearing is likely the common acceleration shudder. See this thread for the status, News for Model X owners with the dreaded shudder
