Elon Musk Discussion - Tesla Brand Damage

It's been sort of a given that Elon Musk's association with the Tesla brand has both positive and negative connotations, but over the last couple of years it seems to have heavily tilted towards the negative. He seems to spend more time operating in tilt mode than he ever has. It all seemed to take a dark turn when he boasted about buying twitter. Since then it's been a real shizenpantz show.

As an owner of a couple of Tesla vehicles, I initially was willing to ignore some of his stupidity. Now I'm not so sure. Knowing what I know now I would not purchase a Tesla. My fear is that he will end up blowing it all, sacrificing any and all good will and market leadership that Tesla currently enjoys, and eventually will kill the company dead.

I think the final straw for me was the recent layoffs. From the outside looking in it is obvious there was no plan. It was just him and his emotional cannon going off. There is no way in hades that any of this can have a positive spin to it.

It really appears that this guy should not even be left in charge of his own life, much less a multi-billion dollar company.

Thoughts?

Yes, I know this will bring out the Musk fanboys, but if you look at him and what he's doing frankly and objectively, you may come away as alarmed as I currently am.

Make your robotaxi predictions for the 8/8 reveal

So Elon says that Tesla will reveal a dedicated robotaxi vehicle on 8/8. What do you think we will see? Will it look like this concept art or something else?

GKcNKVvaEAAUmMG

I will say that while this concept drawing looks super cool, I am a bit skeptical if it is practical as a robotaxi. It looks to only have 2 seats which would be fine for 1-2 people who need a ride but would not work for more than 2 people. I feel like that would limit the robotaxis value for a lot of people. Also, it would likely need a steering wheel and pedals for regulatory reasons even if Tesla did achieve eyes-off capability.

So I think this is concept art for a hypothetical 2 seater, cheap Tesla, not a robotaxi.

Could the robotaxi look more like this concept art but smaller? It could look a bit more like say the Zoox vehicle or the Cruise Origin, more futuristic box like shape IMO and seat 5-6 people.

Or maybe the robotaxi will look more like the "model 2" concept:

Other questions:
- Will the robotaxis be available to own by individuals as a personal car or will it strictly be owned by Tesla and only used in a ride-hailing network?
- What will cost be?
- Will it have upgraded hardware? Radar? Lidar? additional compute?
- Will Elon reveal any details on how the ride-hailing network will work?

Thoughts? Let the fun speculation begin!

2020 MY - TeslaCam Dashcam - USB no longer recognized

I recently updated to 2024.8.4 on my 2020 Model Y with front USB port. I have used the same Samsung SSD T5 for years. I noticed that the TeslaCam icon showed a red X so I unplugged and deleted the files via my laptop. Now, when I plug the USB back in nothing happens. The red X remains and under Safety the options are grayed out. I tried to plug in a basic USB stick and still nothing happened. Anyone else?

Tesla Software updates - Australia

Version 2019.36.1 has been rolling out around the world but not to many people and no one yet has reported it in Aus or NZ.

It provides 1 pedal driving and more power (5%) to model 3 and 3% to S and X.

Curiously it look limited to 75D and late model 100D/P100D and long range/performance variants of the S and X. I have not seen any 60/70/85/90 battery packs get it anywhere in the world.

All model 3s seem to be eligible to get it. The trickling out of it seems odd to me. Anyone have thoughts on why that might be?

Best Aggressive Wheel Offsets?

I wanted to start this thread because I haven't seen it discussed a ton. I am a long time BMW owner, so this is a very popular topic amongst that community. Many of the aftermarket wheels and tires I have seen run on there Model Y's are not that aggressive. I feel this is more because of the EV efficiency thing, but I also have seen where guys do care about the looks of the can. Obviously a wider track or stance will contribute to better handling dynamics. Especially as many of us start to transition over to the newer coilover setups that are being produced. Feedback is that these setups offer not only better performance in the handing department, but also significantly better riding comfort and dampening.

I would like everyone to use this thread to post their specs and widths for what they feel are the best wheel sizes and offsets. I am looking to see aggressive setups which would be flush or even slightly poke to the fender lips. Please let us know your wheel diameters, widths, offsets, tire specs, and spacer sizes if you are running them. It also helps to know your ride height if you are lowered of modified, as well as some pictures of your overall look. I feel these type of threads are extremely informative for us for making decisions for summer as well as winter setup decisions. I have many times heard from vendors or other forum members that certain setups would never work, only to prove they worked perfectly with any rubbing or issues. Frankly, I can't stand to look at vehicles with poorly fitting wheels sunk into the wheel wells. I feel many people do this especially on winter setups just because they are not informed of how wheel widths effect offsets. I encourage everyone to post away, and look forward to your photos and info.

Range loss from wider not taller wheels/tires?

We've all seen multiple breakdowns of range and efficiency for changing wheels from 1 diameter to the next.

My question, is there similar information available for staying the same diameter but wider? I have the stock18x8 and considering various aftermarket options at 18 x 8.5 to 9.5.

For this question, ignore the aero covers I don't use and assume total wheel + tire weight is within 2 lbs.

TIA

Wiki Selling TSLA Options - Be the House

I decided to create this thread as a more focused variation of the Option Trading and Advice thread, with that focus on the option strategy known as The Wheel.

The thing to understand up front - I'm not a financial advisor, nor am I particularly expert in options trading. So far my experience is almost completely in the options selling side. My forays into option buying either ended in large losses, or are currently losing (index puts). But the option selling has worked great for me!

My first and strongest recommendation - if you're new to options trading, or haven't studied it systematically, then I commend the training here:
Free Options Trading Course from Option Alpha | Option Alpha

This took me about 30 hours to go through all of it (1.25x speed worked great for me). And I urge you not to skimp.

This is both general option trading education, along with education about a particular option trading strategy (selling volatility). You're going through that material for the general education, and you'll pick up information about that particular strategy at the same time (it happens to make use of the same edge in the market as The Wheel).

From here on, I'm assuming the level of knowledge conveyed in that linked education.

Here's a link to the FAQ / Glossary thread.

Is it time to dump and run?

I was prepared to stay with Tesla for a good while. Even though I cannot stand Elon.

I keep reading more and more about Elon firing left and right.

I suspect we’ll stop seeing software updates soon and soon it will be hard to get parts.

Elon looks like he is giving up and putting all chips on robotaxi and FSD.

I was hoping for an S/X based on all the updates in cybertruck.

Looking at Lucid Gravity but that won’t be available for a while. And they are not in great financial shape.

Range and efficiency is crap on so many EV’s

UI_a112 - USB device malfunction - I/O Error

Have seen a few posts from years back about this error, nothing recent. Ive been using the same SSD on my Model Y for 2 years now, when I check it in PC it works fine, tried different USB drive, car doesnt recognize it at all. My setup is 100% OEM. The OEM wireless charging pad still provides power, but the dashcam port wont recognize any USB drive and gives:

"UI_a112 - USB device malfunction - I/O Error"

Anyone else experience this?

Supercharger team sacked?

Interesting news/rumour from Electrek today saying Tesla has sacked its ~500 strong Supercharger team. Apparently they will finish building the sites in progress, but no new ones will be going in.

I’m a bit puzzled by this one and can’t work out what’s going on with Musk. They have a big lead in charging and could quite happily take the charging crown in a number of countries, but now seem to be rowing away from this? Curious that this has also happened at the same time as Tesla have opened a whole bunch of UK SuCs to all vehicles.

I can’t decide whether I’d like to know what goes on in Musk’s head!

Wiki Superchargers Visited

**** NOTE: We have transitioned to a new platform ****
More Info: Supercharging.Life database

This is a friendly contest for Tesla owners to track the number of unique public Superchargers where they have charged

- "Supercharger count" is the number of unique public Superchargers where you have charged (just being there does not count), whether or not you were the person plugging in the vehicle (such as a Valet Parking garage or a Passenger) and whether or not it was your own personal vehicle (such as a rental, a loaner, or a friend's Tesla) as long as you were the one who drove >50% of the distance to reach the charger(s).
- The list of chargers in the supercharging.life database are the ones included in the game. If you think one should be added or removed from the list, let us know.
- Only chargers available to the public without special permission are included in the game.
- Chargers not connected to the grid are not counted.
- Doublet locations like the North/South Supercharger 'pairs' in CT, ME, NH, etc. count as individual locations.
- More than 1 charger at the same address, such as Lenox Square Mall (Atlanta, GA) or Montgomery Mall (Bethesda, MD) count as individual locations when they appear as a separate location on the Tesla Nav screen.
- Inactive competitors will be archived and removed from the leaderboard. Just post an update to be reactivated.

See Supercharging.Life database for info on how to post your own visits to the database (preferred), or post your locations with date visited to this thread and one of the admins will update your list for you. All visits must be posted to this thread - not just entered in supercharging.life. If you are the first in the game to visit a supercharger location, please post to the thread as soon as you can so others know it has been visited.
