Model 3 Highland Ultimate Accessory List

I have an M3P Highland on order with an EDD at the end of June. I've been watching Youtube videos and blog posts on what kind of accessories make sense to purchase. One issue I have is most of the accessories are produced by fly-by-night operations with randomly generated store names. Somehow, people recommending them always have affiliate links :) So I'm compiling a list of M3 Highland accessories that are actually good and free from any affiliate/referral/bias. I'll keep this first post updated as I get feedback in the section below. Absolutely no affiliate links/sponsorship. Prioritize quality over price.

2018 Model 3 Modem Issues

Looking for advice.

A few weeks ago my cellular modem stopped working for about 3 full days. Service mode would show “unknown error” / “health check fail” after it was unable to complete the modem health check. I tried rebooting, and even took a software update with no change. (Ironically this first outage started right after the G5 geomagnetic storm).

After scheduling a service appointment, the modem started working again, and after about 4 days of working, I cancelled my appointment. The modem was good for about 2 weeks and then decided to stop working for another 2 days. Same error and conditions.

In both cases, I took the car on one hour+ drives and the modem stayed non working during those times. (i.e. car didn’t just sit in garage). I’ve got another appointment for next week, but the modem has been working again for a full week.

Does Tesla have access to additional logs that I might not see in Service mode to help with diagnosis? I’d prefer not to pay for replacement when it won’t be clear if that fixes the issue long term. Any other recommendations?

Thanks!

Newb: Winter Cold Weather Charging?

Considering a LR-AWD Model (would be our first EV). I do have a specific use case for next winter which concerns me. We will be traveling about 250 miles (each way) to a cabin every weekend for 3 months. We have a 240v circuit at home and there are several superchargers along the way, however we will be relying on 110v slow charging at the cabin with the car parked outside (it will be covered in a carport at least). We will be in northern VT, so it is generally below freezing and sometimes sub zero.

We can commit to stopping at one of the closest superchargers (25 or 75 miles away from our destination) on our way in and out. There are a few public L2 chargers in the immediate area, but I’m not sure how crowded those get. There is no opportunity to install a faster circuit at the cabin at this time.

How challenging will this be relying primarily on the slow charger? Any tips and tricks? Can we make the 240 mile trip on one stop if starting with a full charge? What else am I not considering?

TIA!

Does anyone have rear brakes frozen when first moving after hours parked?

I took delivery of a Plaid X Feb '24 and have had this issue from the beginning.

At first I assumed it was similar to my '22 PY in the winter when I had frequent car washes and the brake pad simply froze from ice. But I'm still having this several times a week, sometimes leaving work on a 70°F day, other times leaving for work from our unheated garage in the morning at 50°F. Possibly it's related to having just had a car wash? I have unlimited for $24 a month so often have one on my way to work or on the way home.

The best way to explain it, is I shift into drive and when the vehicle first moves, it's like the rear brakes have to break free before I can move. I don't have to give it lots of pedal, but it seems pretty stuck.

Those that have gone from a Model X to Cybertruck, are you happy with the switch?

Hey all. I currently have a 2019 X Performance (Raven) that I plan to trade in for a Cyber Beast whenever it arrives in "Late 2024".

Here are some things I love about the X: Self presenting driver door, USS (I believe current models don't have these anymore?), pressing the brake to close the driver door, the instrument cluster, built in home link to open garage doors, and geo fencing for auto folding/unfolding mirrors.

So I guess I'm asking if you've switched from a Model X to a CT, are you glad you switched or is missing these features giving you any regret?

Thanks!

Supercharger - Brentwood / Nashville, TN (Old Hickory Blvd)

Tesla went to the Nashville Board of Zoning Appeals on September 5, 2019 requesting a variance to the parking requirements to install a charging station in the parking lot of the Target at 780 Old Hickory Blvd. If you go to the BZA tracker map, it has details:

NO PERMIT STARTED. PARKING STUDY STILL NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED.INSTALLING 12 SUPERCHARGERS (EV FAST CHARGERS) AND 4 LOWER-POWERED CHARGE POINT L2 CHARGERS. THE ISSUE IS THAT THE SUPERCHARGERS REQUIRE SEVERAL LARGE PIECES OF EQUIPMENT TO BE ABLE TO CHARGE CARS SO QUICKLY (15-30 MIN). THE ONLY AREA THAT MAKES SENSE WOULD REQUIRE US TO PUT THE EQUIPMENT IN 4 EXISTING STALLS. THE PARKING LOT HAS EXACTLY THE NUMBER OF SPACES REQUIRED AND THEREFORE WE WOULD NEED A VARIANCE IN ORDER TO USE 4 OF THE PARKING SPACES FOR EQUIPMENT.

The BZA action was "Granted".

CNick Tesla / Payment ring

Just got my CNick ring. This is amazing! :) I can use it as a backup key for my car, if phone is out of juice. And also it has contactless payment!

So finally you can go to the beach or waterpark and leave all your belongings to the car, and can buy ice cream and beverages. :)

(not a paid advert, just happy customer) :)

I had no idea the efficient fell off a cliff when it's raining!

Hi all, long time lurker shopping a number of vehicles now. We finally rented a '23 MY LR on Turo for local driving and a short road trip. I will be posting soon with pics and many thoughts and questions, but I've got to get this off my chest first: Holy crap does rain do a number on the mileage! Is this normal??

Our road trip was between Indy and NWI so the trip was almost entirely on I-65, a 70mph mostly 4 lane interstate. We charged up to 90% (as per the owner) and hit the road. We're just testing it out, and I'm no longer an impatient teen, so I set the cruise control for (gasp!) only 72 and luckily got behind a semi truck that barely changed lanes and apparently used his cruise control. The distance between vehicles setting was at 3, so I was close enough, but hardly drafting. It was a fairly enjoyable drive, and the road was thankfully not too busy. We hit a supercharger very close to the end of our trip which reported 231 Wh/mi for 162 miles on a sunny spring day in the upper 50s, lower 60s. In retrospect, I should have waited the extra 10 min or so to get up to 90% at the SC, but we capped off at 80% since everyone was anxious to get to Easter dinner.

We left at night after it started raining, and I didn't pay much attention to the charge at first since I "calculated" that we had enough juice to get home, but certainly to get to any of the SCs along the way. I saw there was at least one in Lafayette, which is sort of in the middle of our route. I could easily make it there. We drove most of the way in the rain, and we skipped the first SC option, although the car suggested we stop. Yes I realize that was a mistake, but again, considering my inexperience and the Wh/mi we got on the way there, I assumed we'd get something similar on the way back. About 20-30 min past that SC, I noticed that the estimated mileage was decreasing at about twice the rate we were accruing them. But we had plenty of battery to get to Lafayette. The car was not routing us to that location though. My wife looked it up and discovered only hotel options, so we assumed it was for guests only? Why else wouldn't the car route us there? It routed us further away.

The rain really started coming down, and we started to get nervous. Actually, I got confused, and my wife started to get a little panicky. We shut off all possible battery draws, but the battery continued to deplete precipitously, getting into the 390s for usage. What is going on here? I don't know how mpg changes in our Palisade driving in the rain - if at all - but I'm quite certain it doesn't increase gas consumption by 70%. I'm no dummy, but as I said, this was our first EV experience. It matched estimates with actual mileage almost perfectly for the previous couple days, and on the ride there. I couldn't believe that it was just a matter of rain that utterly wrecked the Wh/mi.

Needless to say, we squeaked into an SC with I think 6% left. I charged up to 45% or so, and that was about 3.5x what we should have needed to get home. Coincidentally, it stopped raining just in time for me to plug in. We left and stayed in the right lane, dutifully behind semis doing under the posted car speed limit. We got home with about 100 miles left in the e-tank, having averaged 245 Wh/mi for the remaining time on the road.

Now keep in mind that I'm filtering all this info through the lens of a 40 year history of ICE cars without as much as a hybrid in the mix, much less an EV. I did a fair amount of research before (and now after) our scare last night, and found little info about the efficiency during the rain. Not that it isn't out there, but I would have assumed that big of a hit to efficiency would have been "front page news" but I never heard of it until I specifically looked it up, and even then there isn't much said about it.

Is this normal? If so, how can the car correctly plan road trips with the unknown of weather absolutely ruining the fuel consumption rate?

(other than that, the car has been an absolute blast, but that review is for another post. The Y was probably #1 on our replacement vehicle list after we sell the Palisade, but this definitely knocked it down a few notches behind PHEVs and hybrids in my wife's mind. I need to get after some damage control if I think this is going to be our next family car.)

2024.14.8 cameras

I swear, I rarely post about buggy releases and wait for updates but ever since the 2024.14.xx release, this is just hilarious. This picture is my M3 LR parked inside my garage. Apparently I have some smaller type of truck sitting on top of my car and even a some sort of ghost a foot or two from the drivers side. Is anybody else seeing this? o_O

Inventory down in League City, Texas

I keep an eye on MYLR prices and availability in League City, Texas and right now, there's NOTHING. Only one NEW 19" MYLR, in Quicksilver with a tow hitch and black interior is available within 100 miles of my zip code and that one is up in Cypress on the northwest side of Houston. At the same location, there's one NEW 20" MYLR in Stealth Grey. Of course, that's not saying that as soon as each of them is reserved, another with a different VIN won't take its place online. But it's a far cry from what has been available for many months. I may have to drive by the League City location, just to see how the lot compares to what it looked like in January when I took delivery...at several thousands of dollars less than the current pricing. Timing and location, timing and location, timing and location.

21 Plaid Retrofit matrix headlights & tilt screen help please!

OK, so after watching Reid Tomasko‘a recent video where he retrofitted the headlights, tail lights, and tilt/swivel screen on a 21 plaid. I have been in contact with him, and he has been extremely helpful to say the least! I’ve purchased Matrix Headlights, the harness adapters, the left body control, module, and the screen mechanism. So far all I have done is install the mechanism itself and plug the wire in. I need someone who can connect remotely and change the config on the car along with program the new body control module.
Just to recap what I need:
Program new L Body control module
Change config to matrix Headlights
Change config for swivel screen
Now other things I would like changed if possible:
Change config to show carbon fiber decor & red brake calipers. Also, I purchased track pack wheels, but there is no option to change. (not even sure if Tesla has added that.) but if it is possible, I would like the car to display the track pack wheels as they are 20 inch and not 21’s like the factory. But either way these last few items are no big deal. It’s mainly the top three I listed
Note the MCU has been changed to the latest and DOES support steam so I DO have the ethernet port. So there should be no need for a media box.
Only one thing they can help? Please DM me.
Once all is finished, I will upload the whole process (other than the config changes obviously) please shoot me a message letting me know how to get a hold of you or however, you want to do the process.
Thanks in advance

Software v.12 2024.14.8

Just got 2024.14.8 this morning, which allegedly just included "minor fixes". But when I started up later, the image of my car covered almost the whole screen, and the cabin temperature had been changed to 68. It took me a minute to get the display back to normal map and car. Now, the car image covers the screen every time I go to Park or enter the car after it being parked.

Anyone know what else this update did?

Starship - Dear Moon (Yusaku Maezawa) - Discussion

I wasn't sure of the most appropriate thread for this, so I created one.

Ahead of SpaceX moon mission, billionaire Yusaku Maezawa sells a $2.3 billion stake in his fashion company to Yahoo Japan

One of the more interesting things is that it says he will go into space before the actual moon flight for practice. Maybe on Crew Dragon?

Upcoming Sites from Tesla.com/permits/construction/awaiting commission

The tables below list sites under construction and proposed sites with markers on Tesla's map, sorted by Tesla's Target Opening date. Historically, marker information has been approximate in terms of both location and timing and many markers end up being removed. Tesla periodically update target site information; the most recent major updates were in February 2023 and March 2024 (follow links for a summary of the changes).

Additional sites not on Tesla's list are also included: if construction has started they are listed in the first table below, other sites (typically where planning requests have been submitted) are listed separately at the end.

Tesla have a separate list of proposed Service Centres on their website (Tesla Service Centers [sic] in United Kingdom), many of which end up with Superchargers. These are included as additional sites if they are not captured by Tesla's proposed Supercharger list but there is evidence (planning or construction) of Superchargers being installed.

TPMS tire location wrong after rotation

I rotated my Model Y tires front to back about 6,000 miles ago. Yesterday I added 3 pounds to the right rear, immediately drove off, and the 3 pounds showed up on the tire pressure screen on the right front instead. No wonder I can't ever get the right rear to the desired pressure. I usually just add a pound or so and don't drive it right away. I'm on a road trip and can't experiment easily, but I suspect the left side is reversed too.

What do you think caused this electrical fire?

New home build 2020. Had electrician run 60 amp rated wire to a 50 amp breaker. I had assumed he would run copper, but he ran aluminum because it was cheaper for him (I didn't find out till after but whatever).

In the garage he did nothing so I personally added a NEMA 14-50 in early 2021. Put a Grizzl-e charger in and charged our 2020 nissan leaf until June of this year. It pulls up to 7 kWh, or 32 A steady. Socket (and this charger) should be able to handle 40 amp steady.

Got our Model 3 in June. It also only pulls also 7 kWh/32A max.

No issues until last week we get an alert that power to the charger stopped. Long story short here is the socket. I know very little. I will assume the 14-50 was not improperly built. Maybe the aluminum contracted/expanded itself out of the joint? I have no idea. I'm going to get a different electrician (this one was lazy in a number of areas including improperly fastening the aluminum to the original 50 amp breaker) to deal with this, but this could have been catastrophic.
