Multiple possible reasons: - They thought the most recent attachment mechanisms would suffice - The ablative underlayment option was conceived/developed after the ship was tiled - They anticipated needing more data, but got sufficient data from IFT-4 - Etc... SpaceX is not one to not press...

Easy to say in retrospect... but at the same time if they operated in such a sequential manner with everything, we probably wouldn't be where we are today...

Well, I think he feels like he should get paid what was previoulsy agreed to... and by the BOD, by the way. The implication is that at some point you aren't allowed personal endeavors? Where exactly IS that threshold?

I interpreted @Brass Guy 's question as being the reason for the seperation mechanism, being hot staging is that it allows greater perfomace for the 2nd stage (never stop thrusting), as opposed to the flip of the booster, which is needed for return...

I'm not sure what this is saying. That Elon fires anybody who disagrees with him? They've admitted they've gone back to square one multiple times on FSD... so I'm not sure I get the intended point?

Yeah... I've argued much the same... Musk does a mental first-principles analysis of what should be possible and then sets that as the goal.

Hehe... zombie threads never die! I think that's one of the fundamental differences with Elon. He's invested in this as he's sees at as much a moral/principle issue as he does a business one. So while many business folks will embrace strange bedfellows if it helps the bottom line, Elon sees it...

Do we know that they didn't? Publicly releasing it may be a different thing, but we know they've captured some stuff in the past that wasn't ever released.

And apparently that thruster issue is not new... they saw a similar failure previously, and the fix didn't work. They believe it to be software.

Aaaaaaand, my passenger side failed today. 11 years in and they both fail about 2 weeks apart. The # of cycles they are good for must be a pretty narrow range. I guess I should expect my rear doors to go any day now...

Did he state "only" one flap damaged though? Kinda hard to imagine the others also weren't, they just may have had immediate video for the one, and have to go over telemetry for the others

I was hoping they might switch as well... I suspect it may have gotten cooked... Dodd just replayed the last part of the descent while it had been subsonic for a bit but before re-light , and pointed out we were still seeing flashes and reflections... he thinks "the ship was certainly on fire"....

That flap being burned thru by tha plasma appears to still have been operational... that's pretty impressive. The cam view looking down on the flap, I heard the SpaceX employees go "Ohhhh", and saw flames coming THROUGH the flap joint, lol...

Dodd is doing a post-game and replayed the booster landing... It looked like the one Raptor that was out actually had a RUD... debris flies up past the cam...

I don't know... telemetry might have been off, because it appeared to be at 0 altitide when I could see the orientation changing (I think), and they said re-light did occur, despite telemetry not showing it...

We definitely need to see a CT "IFT-4" wrap, lol...
