Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

My understanding is that the Model S Plaid has adjustable shocks like the new M3P plus it has air springs. For technology, I would say that the Plaid is still superior. I drove a new Model S non-plaid a while back, and when you put it into track mode it tightens up and handles much better. It's...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

It will be interesting to see, but I think the Ion Evo will probably end up in the ultra high performance summer tires, one notch down from the max performance summer tires. It appears to be more of a Pilot Sport 5 competitor than a Pilot Sport 4s competitor.

That test on Tire Reviews doesn't compare the Hankook Ion Evo to either the Michelin PS4 or PS4s.

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The only place I see the Ion Evo summer tire is on Hankook's website. It isn't showing up on Tirerack, Discount Tire, or Les Schwab's websites. I haven't seen any independent tests of it, so I'm wondering where the conclusion comes from that it, "matches or beats the PS4 and PS4S summer tires"...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I find it difficult to believe that the Ion evos would provide better grip than Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires in the dry. The Sport 4s, while not as grippy as the Pilot Sport 4S, are pretty good, and there's typically a significant difference in dry grip when dropping from a Max Performance...

On Tirerack, the only Hankook Ion Evo tires it shows are AS under the Grand Touring All-Season category. All the Hankook summer tires are called Ventus ...

Well, if Kyle were trying to compete with Consumer Reports, I think you'd have a good point. I think it's pretty obvious that Kyle's target audience is car enthusiasts. Enthusiasts are generally much better informed about cars than the general population, and for them, Kyle's thoughts are...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Kyle is a serious car enthusiast, and he was obviously excited about how the new M3P drives, similar to how Jason Cammisa was about the M3P. Kyle and his team specialize in EVs on his channels, and they're probably the most knowledgeable car reviewers on YouTube regarding EVs. As for swapping...

In 2023, who's making the best all-weather, all-season tires for the Tesla Model 3?

When talking all season tires, there are performance and touring versions. For the best of both, the performance ones have better steering feel and better grip in the dry and wet, but the touring ones have a better ride and are quieter. The all weather tires are similar to the touring all season...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Well, it depends. We replaced our 2018 LR with an M3P last year, and a couple of the reasons I wanted the P, instead of a LR, were the track mode and better brakes, in addition to the better grunt at lower speeds. The new M3P has even more power everywhere, better ride and handling, comes with...

Jason Cammisa, in his review, basically said that the M3P's suspension is superior to the BMW M3. He called the suspension "spectacular".

Model 3 Highland or Model Y?

I did a bit of research comparing the cargo space on the Model 3 and Y 2 years ago. With the seats folded down, the most reliable numbers I found showed the Model 3 as having 53 cubic feet and the Model Y as having 68 cubic feet. These numbers include the frunk as well. According to Tesla, the...

Help me decide Model 3P or Model YP

I think it should be an easy choice. If you really enjoy sporty cars and performance cars, the new M3P is a no brainer. After the $7500 fed tax credit, you're looking at $46,490. If you're not that driver, get the new base Model Y Long Range. It's $44,900 minus $7500 for the credit, and it comes...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Sounds about right based on my experience. My longest single stretch ever was 306 miles, but I was averaging closer to 60 and I lost 4,500 feet of elevation in the process. This was in the 2018 Dual Motor Model 3 I had previous to the current car. Also, it still had 3% left after going 306...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Just a guess, but I think there's a good chance they're an updated design, with wider rear wheels and tires. The current track pack is 20" x 9" wheels with 245/35R20 tires. If they do the same upgrade with the new model, we should end up with 245/35R20 tires in the front on 9" wide wheels and...

Well, unless you know them personally, how could you possibly trust anyone around here? After all, they're just random people with a handle, and you know next to nothing about the vast majority of them. We know far more about most of the YouTubers who have reviewed the M3P. There was certainly...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I am trusting people who have driven the car, you know, real world testing, like Jason Cammisa, to be reporting accurately. I've generally found him to be trustworthy, even when I don't agree with him. Also, we know the seats have substantially more side bolstering; the pictures are enough to...
  25. G

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The easiest way to get 4 tires and wheels in a Model 3 is to lower the rear seats and then load in some of the tires from the back and some from the sides.
  26. G

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

If you find a 10 second car to be underwhelming, then obviously you need a 9 second car. Luckily for you, Tesla makes one, and it is also quite reasonably priced for its level of performance. For those of us who don't need a 10 second car, the new Model 3 Performance should have more than enough...

Well, I guess we all have our own ideas about what constitutes a "PITA" or "challenging", but I've transported 4 or more wheels and tires in a variety of smaller vehicles over the years, and never even gave it a second thought. This includes vehicles like a Honda Civic, multiple BMW 3 series...

Really? They'll fit in just about any sedan, hatchback, SUV, or truck. Unless you're planning to take public transport or a 2 seat sports car to pick up your new Tesla, you should be fine.
  29. G

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

While I think it would be nice if Tesla offered an option for all season tires on the M3P, it would cost them more money to have that option, and their competition doesn't provide that option, so there's not much incentive for Tesla to do so.

Then do what I did. Pick up another set of wheels and tires suitable for winter, and bring them with you when you pick up the car. Let the service center know in advance, and they should be willing to swap them for you for a fee.

That's excellent, even with the lowered vehicle. It sounds like the change in offset had no negative impact.
  32. G

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I was thinking that running 18s would be nice for the winter and I like the idea of the Aeros to try and optimize the range as much as possible. So, the MPP rotors are 4mm thicker plus 15mm spacers minus 5mm for the more poitive offset of the Aeros, and you moved the wheels 14mm to the outside...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I've seen older posts on the forum here that the Tesla 18" aero wheels won't fit on the M3P unless you grind the calipers down a little bit. Is is possible to fit them without doing that? Do the spacers help the wheel barrel clear the caliper?
  34. G

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Regarding tires, as far as I know, no tire manufacturer has made street tires that are both asymmetric and directional. If they did, they'd have to have a left and a right tire in each size.
  35. G

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I only recall Tesla ever talking about1/4 miles times for one car, the Model S Plaid. Have there been any others that I missed or just don't remember?

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

As long as you don't drive too aggressively and overheat the tires, winter tires generally work okay in warm, dry weather. They still wear a lot faster than they would normally, but they generally have good grip and work pretty well. Now, I'm talking about a 70 to 80 degree day here in Colorado...

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

Summer tires usually aren't the quietest tires out there. The all seasons tend to be the best for that. The quietest tires I've ever had on any of my cars were the General Altimax 365AW. That said, quiet has never been my top priority for a tire, so I haven't tried many of the tires that are...

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

I think the choice of tires is very much related to where you live and how you drive your car. Personally, I'm very performance oriented, and I'm willing to give up tire mileage, ride comfort, and some stability for improved handling. When I lived in Southern California, for over 20 years I ran...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I actually like the look of 19" wheels and tires on a model 3 better than 20". The proportions of the size of the car to the wheels and the tires just has better esthetics in my opinion.
  40. G

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I wonder if the 19" rims are forged like the 20" rims. If so, they should be quite light.

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I'm kind of surprised how much whining and complaining there is here about the new Model 3 Performance. The new one, according to the early reports of those who have driven them, is faster, better handling, better braking, better riding, and has better seats. The acceleration also isn't supposed...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I typically buy new, and if I like the car, I'll keep it for a long time, 10+ years and over 150k miles has been the case with about half the cars I bought new.
  43. G

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Want a vehicle that will require tens of thousands of dollars in repairs before hitting 150k miles, buy the BMW. I'm also hoping that the new Model 3 will at least match the M3 Comp from 100 - 200KPH.
  44. G

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Actually, I'm hoping that the Ludicrous, assuming that is what it is called, trashes the BMW and can knock off a 2.5 to 60, but I'd still be pretty happy with matching a perfectly launched M3 Comp in 0-60 and 1/4 mile. The effortless way in which Teslas launch is one of their biggest advantages...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

At this point, the 2.9 is a rumor, and we have no idea if it's supposed to be with or without rollout. If it's real and without rollout, then 2.6 to 2.7 with rollout would be expected.
  46. G

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

It does cost a lot more, but it is common to cross shop an M3 with a Model 3 Performance. As for the 0-60, BMW's official specs are notoriously conservative and the 3.4 is without rollout subtracted, so it's very, very close to last year's Model 3 Performance. Car and Driver got 0-60 in 2.8 with...

Supercharger - Bryce Canyon City, UT

Yes, I think making money is one of Tesla's goals with the Supercharger network. I don't think that was initially the goal, but I think it's the case now. Pushing a universal standard makes sense, but Tesla shouldn't be helping anyone else build out their own charging network unless they get a...
