2025 Roadster per Elon

I’m on my 3rd model 3. I might trade my current M3P - so likely 4. Wasn’t planning on it but my current one has an occasional “klunk” that, despite what the repair department says, is not normal. So I want to get ride of it. I’m waiting to see the refreshed M3P specs.

As for the roadster I figure in Musk is saying ‘25 that means definitely not ‘25. So best case ‘26.

While I agree with this post for the most part, there's one small point of clarification to be made: just because there are multiple teams dedicated to specific projects, the resources for those teams come from the same bucket. That bucket isn't a limitless resource bucket. Each quarter those resources are allocated and based on slices of a single pie; if one slice gets larger, others have to get smaller.

So the other poster wasn't wrong in saying that project focus transitions could reduce resources for something else but it's far too blanket of a statement without considering all other factors. We all know how focused Tesla is on the bottom line so it's pretty safe to say that focusing efforts on a Next Gen Roadster will indeed negatively impact all other projects... the only debate is on how much each will be affected and if the result will be appreciable by the consumer.

I wouldn't feel the need to correct someone who feels concerned that this allocation isn't being optimized for what they believe is the best path forward towards the overall objective. These are the exact types of high-level decisions that can derail small(ish) upstarts who are trying to disrupt an established segment.
I have to agree with point #1. Having a team assigned is not a guarantee there will be progress. Original Roadster owners like me recall the promise that they were working on a Roadster 3.0 (original Roadster) that would include a larger battery, lower resistance bearings and tires and improved aerodynamics we could upgrade to. Only the battery happened. Promises aren't guarantees. There were promises with the Model S as well.

Just consider this promise from George B (note I was a part-owner of a Model S Signature Vin 55 and anticipated being able to get the promised rear seat lighting that was in the initial specifications and the promised below...you won't be surprised to learn it never came to be...

First of all, thanks to everyone throughout this thread who had faith in us that we were doing the right thing. Your support is always greatly appreciated.

So, what’s going on… This thread started as the result of a change to our website specs page and a response from one of the Tesla Team about rear seat reading lights and the desire to increase visibility for tall customers. The following highlights exactly what we’ve been working on.

The beta Lighted Vanity Visor that first showed up in Model S was not acceptable to us from an appearance, function or size standpoint. So we rejected it and immediately started working on another version. In the meantime, we started delivering cars. We did not want to be delivering cars without Lighted Vanity Visors when our webpage specs said otherwise…so we changed the specs page to be more accurate at that moment in time.

The removal of 2nd Row Reading lights from the specs page is also an “accuracy of the moment” issue. We removed these from the specs page because we were working on another initiative that might impact what type of light we could use in the back seat for a reading light. Basically, we found a way to potentially add a few millimeters of additional headroom in the back seat. As part of that initiative, we didn’t know for sure if we would be able to use the same light fixture, or even the same type of reading light going forward…so we deleted it from the specs page to be more accurate at the time.

Both of these issues are temporary issues, and for those of you who have been following us for a while, you know how we operate. When something doesn’t meet our expectations, we dive right in to fix it. We work hard to find the best solution possible, then we implement it. We try to keep all information as up to date as possible, but in today’s world, that sometimes causes problems from a communication standpoint. Nevertheless, we always feel as though it is better to be as accurate and up to date as possible, even if it makes things a little tougher for us from time to time.

You will soon see another change to our specs page. You will see the addition of 2nd Row Reading Lights. We have been able to accomplish what we set out to do with the rear seat headroom, and will be able provide reading lights in the same place as originally planned. We focused first on the headroom adjustment because that is more complicated within the car itself, then we focused on the lights and placement. To avoid any further questions about what will happen next, let me be perfectly clear... there will be a few early cars delivered that do not have 2nd Row Reading Lights. However, we will be happy to install them in the future (at no charge of course). The wires are already in place so this is not a major event.

You will not see the Lighted Vanity Visor back on the specs page for a little while longer because we are still working on getting the form factor and functionality exactly the way we want it. It will be lighted, it will have a mirror, and it can easily be retrofit into all cars. In fact, we will be encouraging everyone to get the retrofit.

So just to be clear, all cars that get delivered are set up to have reading lights in 2nd row seats and Lighted Vanity Visors. Those that don’t have the latest and greatest when they receive their car can have these items retrofit at no additional cost.

I hope this helps clear up all questions regarding this issue. Please understand, we are very, very serious about everything that goes into Model S. We are doing all we can to make every millimeter count while still listening to what our customers and future customers want. We are going to have lights in the right places, a shelf that was asked for by customers in the console area, and a lighted visor mirror that you can look into and smile. And when all is said and done, that is what we are really striving for…you smiling.

Still waiting on my Sig S lighted vanity mirrors and rear seat lighting 11+ years later ...

The new roadster is even farther behind than the 2010 err 2012 S in terms of prototype to actual release.
 
As a diehard capitalist, I don't particularly appreciate funding an organization on false promises. I am convinced that the money that has gone into "down payments" for this long term period with "emptiness", or false results to the promises made is funding Tesla's other projects. Some may find this "ok", but I do not. Would I love a roadster, most certainly. However, would I put my money into a "hole" with zero return, absolutely not. The money lost, opportunity ROI adds to the cost of the car..., so if it is $200K or $250K, the cost is much higher as "YOUR MONEY" has been earning Elon interest on his false promises. I would feel nothing less than "STUPID" if I had a deposit on this vehicle, with the falsities, aka "LIES," to said investment in vaporware. As an actual capitalist, this defies all gravity. Would I get one? Maybe? Do I want one, "Definitely"!, however nothing is worth the price of admission at this level, for this long, for falsities that keep getting justified because it is "ELON". I admire his products, have a Model S Plaid, if not "LOVE THEM"! However, this Roadster gig leaves much to be desired, and I can't bury my thoughts under the rug of "Elon Time"!, Falsities! and counter-capitalist thinking. His model is built on low-cost/high-production management of "Uptime/Yields/Flexibility" at the factory level. Model 3, Y, and a soon-to-be-released, as they say, "low-cost model" feeds this narrative. Roadster does not; therefore, if I had money to burn and didn't care about where it sits or ROI, then I would be stupid and put the deposit down. I'm not labeling anybody who has done this thus far, as it is your prerogative, but "I wouldn't do this ever," being the son of traditionalist gen thinking, post-great Depression, etc. Realize that he is making a fool out of us all with his warped thoughts and promises far faster than any roadster has demonstrated on the streets to date. Happy Motoring ...."In my Plaid", which is considered to me, my roadster! lol.
 
I put down $50,000 in November of 2017 for a roadster with an introduction of 2019. I left my deposit because if prices went up I was still guaranteed a price of $200,000. Now, did I get it right that now Tesla is saying, "but this could change closer to its production debut?"

Did I or did I not have a deal in 2017 for a base price of $200,000 with my $50,000 deposit? Had there been any mention in 2017 that the price could change, I would have not put a deposit on the car.
