Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Tesla publicly says that there isn’t a new Model Y coming this year. What they didn’t say is actually more important.

They didn’t say that a new Model 3 Performance isn’t coming this year. It will definitely happen this year but it may happen later in the year rather than in a couple of weeks like some people think.

I wouldn't be surprised if new Model Y comes in Q2 and they say "because of Osborne effect, we had to fast-forward the timeline".

It is one thing to say "Hey look at this new shiny thing(Roadster, Highland Model 3, CyberTruck, FSD...etc) we will have coming out in a year or so" and then delay the launch for years. However, it is a totally different thing for them to publicly say "Buy a Model Y now because we are not going to refresh it this year" if they aren't going to stick with that. That would be classified as fraud.

They can just call it Not-a-Model-Y and the fraud argument is washed away.

Nevertheless, I believe they will price it a bit higher than the outgoing model so that most people will be happy to buy the old cheaper one.

Same as they did with CT pricing. Nobody is complaining slow production ramp because price is so high only a few people can afford it.

It would only be fraud if they made some public announcement to that effect. Telling some employees on an internal memo is not the same.

Considering that it has standard 2023 Sport wheels mounted in clear violation of Tesla policy, it's probably safe to assume that they finally corrected the errors in the wheel hubs and Performance brake rotors that complicated the fitting of standard wheels. This will now enable them to offer the Performance model with lower-spec wheels - or in other words - allow them to charge extra for the Performance wheels.

And note that the intern who designed the god-awful 2021-2023 wheels apparently didn't return this summer (yay!). The 2024 lineup was clearly done by a smarter kid and Tesla sure seems to be going to great lengths to hide the new crown-jewel Performance wheels.

Putting 2 and 2 together suggests that:
  1. The Performance wheels will be awesome
  2. They'll be impossible to get within the $55K tax credit limit so most P's will ship with standard wheels
  3. The "internet" will claim that they are too heavy

Yes, but that's not an "authorized" fitment because of the offset change. And the stepped hub was obviously a mistake for which the stepped wheel was a hacked solution. There's no need for the step to be where it is, it could have been 5mm further in to avoid the issue, and there's also no need for rotors to be different thicknesses. It was some combination of mistakes and parts availabilities that led to the poor design.

The fact that Tesla simply threw some old sport wheels on there instead of the camouflaged Performance wheels seen in other photos suggests that they either fixed the sloppy design or braved the certain death risk of driving with a 5mm offset error. And I'd bet Tesla chose the former.

I’ll bet you a dollar the new P still has the stepped hub lip.
