I was thinking about what how Tesla changed the way they discount.

Anyone has a good explanation on why Tesla decides to discount at the beginning of Q vs end of Q like they have always done? In fact Q1 is the quarter where they discounted beginning of Q and prices creeped up by end of Q, totally opposite of what they usually do. Q2 may be the same again.

It's already being done more than ever before. over 400k new people per quarter advertises for Tesla. The reason why word of mouth works today is because EVs are new. People are curious enough to ask questions and want to genuinely try them out. An ad on TV spoon feed you some information but it's not nearly as effective as your neighbor telling you how great it is.

So when it comes to advertising, Tesla has never had so many people advertising EVs, FSDB, and the brand. How else can the car beat a corolla at 2x the ASP?

However whenever people start asking about the price, 50k or whatever just seems out of reach. And even with the tax credit, this is not provided up front. So people will scrutinize their monthly payments @ the 7500 dollar higher price as they budget for the year.

When it comes to ad, I agree with Elon that if anything the money is used to pay off MSM as their negative headlines can damage potential sales...this has more effect on Tesla sales than the actual ad.

Looks like Giga Berlin is getting some new robots - would fit well with info on 4th shift and possible deliveries of base Y to Turkey..

4th shift seems like it could use the same equipment 24/7 operation supports four 40 hour a week shifts. New robots could be updates to body line for structural 4680 version.

Of note, Hyundai has large numbers of vehicles but small profits, maybe this explains low EV production plans for 2030. Gushes over Tesla.


 
These papers are from a while ago, but worth reposting from those that didn't see, and why 4680 should be such a huge deal for faster charging batteries

Basically due to the tabless electrode heat generated inside of the cell is cut by a factor of more than 4 due to lower ohmic losses, and on top of that heat dissipation is also improved. Also, IR going down means power can either be higher, or be kept high deeper into the charging session

Is quite likely the 4680 Model Y could charge way faster than it does, but for obvious reasons Tesla limits it. At Giga Texas opening the advertised it between the lines charging 10-80% in 15 minutes, that was later removed from the video

Yes, but this is the issue with society and economics that forces some retirees to work. Nothing to do with robots. Robots will replace many jobs weather we like it or not.

Nobody's crying over telephone switchboard operators from the past.

Automated telephone switching is instantaneous and works perfectly. With self-checkout, the process takes MORE time and is way more error prone. They have 'improved' the bottom-line for the seller, while making the product, from the customer POV, much worse. This is why its unpopular.
Self checkout has not been any amazing tech breakthrough. Its just conditioned the customer to do some minimum-wage labour every time they visit the store. I swear they will try and get us to unload the trucks soon...

My thinking is that current discounts are part of matching production with orders. And the subtle shift is part of unwinding the wave. Prevously when the wave was in operation discounts were part of a delivery push.

Now Tesla knows left over genuine inventory available for sale at the start of the quarter and likely production volumes. They will try to pick sufficiently discounted prices to ensure orders are placed for all production expected this quarter.

As the quarter progesses, Tesla has more information and may make further price adjustments. These adjustments are more likely to be increases, but could be decreases if the order volume was too low.

  • electric vehicle charging station which will have 34 spaces with chargers, 29 of the 34 charging stations will be Superchargers and the remaining 5 will be Level 2 chargers."

TLDR: The Tesla drive in / supercharger restaurant moves closer to fruition.

A lot happened in Q1, not the least of which was the IRA receiving a three-month grace period and the 5-seat Model Y initially being lumped under the $55k MSRP limit "other" category before being flipped to an SUV -- and prices increased most significantly that same day.

Who knows what's coming this quarter

Is tab heating the limiting factor in charge rate? For example why do conventional tab LFP, LTO, and nano silicon cells charge at much higher C rates than NMC/NCA?

Not only, and it's not the tab itself that heats, since it's very short there isn't that much power loss there, but the whole electrode

In a 2170 the most distant part of the electrode is half a meter from the tab, so the current from that part has to travel through all the distance in a thin copper or aluminum foil, which has ohmic losses

Isolating it to chemistry used alone is the wrong way to look at it, for example, if you know you nano silicon cells can charge faster on chemistry alone, you make the foils thicker (but lose energy density in the process), it's a optimization game, really easy to make a battery good at one thing, but hard for that one to no be garbage in something else. If you want to compare chemistries like that, you have to isolate all other variable

But to your question, highly recommend to read the paper on the second link since it goes deep on it, but basically you need to control heat and electrode potential, too much heat, and the organic additives degrade and you lose capacity fast, too little heat and you can't tolerate much electrode potential and you start to plate lithium metal, which on top of losing capacity since you are literally making part of the lithium in the cell useless, they can create structures over time that short the cell, and that can range from self discharge to a Bolt like scenario

The true magic on the tabless electrode is that it makes the cell really even on the interior on everything, potential difference, temperature and so on, so even if you completely ignore that it allows you to extract more heat from cell, it already improves how fast you can charge it

The authors discuss the heat part quite well and present an interesting consideration, the heating loss of the 4680s is so much smaller that you can't rely on it to help heat the cells to optimum temperature for fast charging

For example, we see on current Tesla vehicles that if the pack is cold, it will charge at a slower rate while active heating the pack, and as it heats up it slowly rises the power, and the more the power increases the more heat is generated and the faster the rate of power increasing goes. So a pack starting at 0°C that need to be heated to 50°C for peak power, will heat much faster from 25°C onwards

That likely won't be as noticeable on a a 4680 equipped vehicle, most of the heat will have to be provided externally, not a problem on a tri or quad motor Cybertruck that can use the motors to generate 20 kW of heat, but maybe a bit on a single motor vehicle

I still can't believe no one plugged ScanMyTesla in a 4680 Model Y and recorded a charge session, that would answer so many questions

This is such an important topic for investors to understand, if only to refute nonsense claims like "Tesla has no technical advantage in batteries over Toyota" as is often repeated by TSLA fuzzybear Craig Irwin of Roth Capital Partners (aka Big Carbon on Wall St.)
