Seems like the author discovered that the same way as all new users do. I don’t see anything nefarious about those quotes. The target audience is people who don’t own Teslas and are not familiar with how it operates, so that must be explained to the audience.

Current Teslas are not Level 3, they are Level 2. Level 2 is "driving assist," the human in the driver's seat is responsible at all times.

In an L4 or L5 car, there is no requirement for anyone to even be in the car, so you have to think about the minimum safe requirements in that situation as well. The car hits a deer when there isn’t any one in the car, what does it need to do. It can’t rely on a human taking over.

Something like that. :) In any case, a car can always be disabled by removing the air from the tires and/or putting the car up on blocks.

Actually it was the bean counters at Tesla that made that decision. Other car manufacturers are using sensors that detect when the driver is holding the wheel without requiring torquing the wheel.

I guess people get upset when they paid money for features that will come in a "future update" and then their hardware becomes obsolete before they get said features. 🤷‍♂️

Just to add on that L4 and L5 do not need a human in the car at all. Think of the situation where a robotaxi has just dropped off a fare and is enroute to the next fare. Or your L4 personal car has just dropped you off at work and then goes to find a parking spot.

I would take that statement with a grain of salt. The EV charging rates are listed on the official FPL rate sheet. Right now, the off peak rate is listed as zero cents. At any time they request a rate adjustment from the state they could make that rate higher. I don't think they currently have...

Umm… Waymo is doing that without anybody in the driver’s seat. Tesla needs a human driver partner to get to that safety level.

There is no indication that Tesla lacks data to train the neural nets. If anything, they already have more data than they can effectively work with.

If/when the barriers to entry get that low, the market will be flooded with Tesla robotaxis and the competition will drive the price down so low that it will no longer be profitable. People will use it to get a "free car" by having the fares pay for it, but will end up with a worn-out abused...

You'll be OK. I had a hard wired Tesla wall charger on a 60A breaker and they removed the Tesla charger from the wall and installed the FPL one in it's place. They did make me change the 60A breaker down to a 50A breaker, but that's fine since the FPL charger maxes out at 40A. I'm paying $31/month.

As a 2018 purchaser of my Model 3 (and FSD) I am substantially less concerned about the “good news for Tesla,” and much more concerned about the bad news for me.

The concern is mainly that current owners of the FSD software will no longer own the car by the time the software is viable. This is a legitimate concern at the current rate of software development.
