Planning a Road Trip & Cutting it Close

Kohley - I do not know of a way to tell the car that you plan to drive 10 over. AFAIK it uses the posted speed limit with some cushion a I normally drive about 5 over. Anecdotally, I met a guy who was unhappy that his Tesla could not accurately estimate his range. After talking I found out that...

Master Thread: Definitive 14-50 NEMA Outlet Guide

I disagree with using the highest current setting while charging because of stressing these plug in connections which we have proof of being problematic. As far as charging efficiency, even # wire gets hot when charging at 40A. Heat is wasted energy. So while 5A is probably not the most...

Just curious - At what Amp setting do y'all usually charge your cars?

    Tighten your lug nuts

Do you mean bolts or nuts? Look up the difference. If there are nuts loose, by all means take the car back immediately. They will not get tighter by themselves.

The other thing I would say is that I really don't need to charge at 40A. That's fast enough to take my 75 kWh battery from 0 to 100% in about 8 hours. Now that we have solar, I use that (don't get much ¢ selling kWh back to the grid) as much as possible and charge at around 16A max and it's...

FWIW you do not need a NEMA 14-50. A NEMA 6-50 only requires 2 #6 and a ground so the wire run is cheaper and lighter. I know of no EV that requires a neutral. Yes Hubble makes a 6-50.

    Cybertruck 1:18 Die Cast

Buy the one from Etsy. The doors open, the frunk opens like a Rivian. but it rolls and has suspension and lights.

Alert for leaving phone (key) in car

On long trips I'm not using my phone in the car unless a call comes in so the charge will last all day. I then charge at the hotel or destination. Phone stays in my pocket.

Alert for leaving phone (key) in car

OP said he did not like the beep of the horn. Personally I just keep my phone in my pocket. I never seem to need to charge it in the car. Am I weird that way?

Torque distribution between front and rear for dual motor model Y

Turns out that weight makes very little difference in range for an EV. Not so for a gas car because they have no regenerative braking. The extra cost is a bigger factor IMO.

Electrify America Fast Chargers - Huh?

Former electric company employee DFW here. We typically load transformers to 130% nameplate in the summer and 160% winter. Besides, the transformer is really heavy and so takes a long time to heat up. Since EV's only use the max charge power for ~10 minutes or so, it's not a big deal. We also...

Planning a Road Trip & Cutting it Close

cwerdna - Our experiences are very different. Both of my Teslas came with V2 (32A) EVSEs. I keep them in the cars. I bought V1 EVSEs for home charging as they permit up to 40A charging. Charging at an RV park at 32A will add about 30 miles of range in an hour. If you just need a few miles it's a...
