What's the battery level in the key fob like? The older S needs a fob in the car so if there's a fob issue it won't start. I had mine being strange last year so ended up getting another key in the end and it's been fine since (kiss of death). Worth just trying a new battery of a good make.

There is a SIM upgrade for some model S. I had one last year. Worth checking in the service section to see if it is in there.

There's the gameboy device around that breaches any security with the rolling code vulnerability. That is another step on from the relay theft technique.. More worrying this video suggests it's easy to order replacement keys from abroad with just the VIN so you can just take any car at all.
