FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

    But especially our investment.

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

I didn't mean to imply I 'fixate'. Of course I'm scanning. I was contrasting keeping my eyes generally forward vs. sneaking a second or two at a time to futz with the interface.

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Maybe I'm an indecent driver, but I feel I'm decent at gauging how likely there is to be a surprise popping out in front of me on the road if I take my eyes off of it for 2 seconds. My eyes are typically darting back to the road at a rate I'd say is greater than one glance each two seconds. But...
  4. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Not necessarily; one can examine the screen for a couple of seconds, quickly scan the road for any surprises without moving one's head, and continue with the screen task. Granted, it's less safe than always keeping eyes on the road, but given road conditions that are fairly inert I believe a...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

More about nagging: For me, and this may be something tied in to my own personal neurology, I find that I can observe and mentally process FSD behavior considerably easier when I'm not having to deal with maintaining torque on the yoke, or remembering to give the yoke a short push every once in...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

My eyes are pretty sensitive, so I wear sunglasses just about any time I'm not wearing my yellow night-vision glasses. But I can see being in a mood for hands-free and just sacrificing the sunglasses for that period. OTOH, keeping some torque on the yoke has never been all that much of an...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Right, that's great theoretically, but if you recall, I kinda brought this all up because Elon chose to use the term emulation. It could be absolutely nothing, just a simple term he figured everyone could understand and HW4 may have been designed from the ground up to be in "HW3 emulation mode"...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

You mean just because the definitions you cited didn't address there being a performance cost? There's always a cost, just depends how extensive the emulation is. I don't know anything about the architectures involved, I'm just saying it's possible HW4 emulating HW3 could run slower than HW3...
  10. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

When I hear "emulation" mode I think loss of performance, technically it means a layer of abstraction that can cost an order of magnitude in throughput (as in the case of, say, one CPU emulating another.). If Elon had really meant to say that HW4 output could just be "sliced" to yield...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Having done a solo coast-to-coast round trip and a couple more close-to-that solo road trips in the past two years, I can absolutely attest to the fatigue reduction of using FSD. At one point I was heading South approaching Yellowstone, planning to spend the night there, when an approaching...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

We had this mug, probably still do but I haven't seen it for a while. Whenever I want to remind my wife how lucky she is, I remind her that I'm good for more than just parallel parking.

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Is there actually such a thing anymore? I mean "us testers". There's FSDS users, and non-users. Of the users, some of them post about it here. There are the influencers, who Tesla may deign to release to first, but isn't it basically just their testers and the public now? I don't know, I'm just...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Actually the signals are quite intelligent, at night my left turn lane gets an arrow a second after I stop at the line. It's the geometry of the intersection that makes perfect sense to a human (you go left, right, or straight across) but FSD just gets flummoxed because IT thinks going straight...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

I do have some curiosity as to what a recalibration could do for my funky intersection down the street.
  17. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Is there any known way to test calibration? I'd love to know if and how much my cameras are off before recalibrating them, and then to be able to measure again after.

A pilot friend shared one with me that I now cannot get out of my head any time I hear someone misuse the word: when the flight attendant announces "we'll be landing momentarily", I picture the pilot doing a touch-and-go...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

I've had several cases where FSD did not give a jogger running toward me anywhere near as much room as it should've, even with a clear view of the empty road ahead. Once the jogger was rounding the corner I was turning right into, and the other time it was on a straightaway but the jogger had to...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Love it, all we would need are 50% improvements to get another '1', whereas we need a 90% improvement for each '9'. Right now, I'd probably be OK if 12.4 ends up representing a 50% improvement. I'd be even more OK if that's accomplished without any regressions...

Mazal Tov. It's gonna be fun, that's for sure!

That's a really optimistic interpretation IMO.

Yes, it translates to "Time for the two-finger salute"
  25. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

I'm thinking: the road crew has a set of signs they use whenever they set up a work area. The first ones say "speed limit 25 ahead", "speed limit 25", ..., "End 25 speed limit". They can use those same signs everywhere.

If my wife's M3 were being counted by TeslaFi (if it's something one needs to sign up for, she hasn't), she'd be in that last category.

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Today on a 90-minute trip from Pomfret, RI (Vanilla Bean Cafe) to home in North Reading, MA, the lane-change (or won't change) behavior did not occur. All changes were reasonably prompt, even with a car fairly close (but not too close). So that's both good and puzzling. I'm wondering now if...
  28. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Well, if it turned off the signal when it doesn't "want" to make the lane change, that would be a bit better...but it doesn't. I've counted 13 seconds after turning on the signal that it just sat there without initiating the change. With the signal on the entire time. But I have not tried just...

This happens on the highway with no turns coming up for tens of miles.
  30. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Lately just about everything I get annoyed about relates to it doing something "not fast enough". Obviously stop signs, but now I'm seeing this reluctance to make a lane change when I ask for it. If there are no cars in the lane I want to change into, it's immediate. But if there's a vehicle...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

I let FSD 12.3.6 "drive" me home last night from meditation class, about a 45-minute jaunt from Newburyport to North Reading, MA. The feeling was pretty positive, not for any big new changes in behavior but rather due to an increase in trust overall. If the known weak spots would just get fixed...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

I don't know how you measure the arrival of "the first 9". I'd settle for "Wow, this does so many things better than 12.3, like being able to consistently handle my funky intersection down the street."
  33. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Haven't we basically accepted the fact we'll have to wait for 12.4 before we see any sexy improvements? And hopefully many more of those than regressions?
  34. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Well, I've read enough now about FSD causing motorcycles grief that, while I'm feeling my sore body from two days of riding (yesterday with my wife on the back) even when nothing went wrong, I'm making a mental note to disengage when on the highway and motorcycles are near. It's what I'd...

But I'm an equal-opportunity rim destroyer. I've squashed/quashed/scratched/trashed most of the rims I've ever had on any cars.

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

I'm not so sure that's fair, at least not when characterized as "far" worse. A bit worse, sure. But if there were a slew of fatalities or something, that would be tough to keep under wraps, especially with the vitriol of MSM and shorts regarding events like that...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

OTOH, we know he's timeline-challenged, but then delivers eventually...which in the case of L4/5, if Telsa finally pulls it off, will have been worth the wait. "The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer." Yeah, that's my story and I'm sticking to it...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Good vision. If you know about municipal power companies and solar, I've got that combination and it's 16kWp of battery nightmare. The only saving grace is I'm being good to the planet, if not all that much to my bank balance. We'll never break even, and I'll probably have to replace the...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

I'm as afraid of stop-and-go traffic when riding as I am of taking FSD through my funky intersection down the street. The former I avoid like the plague, the latter I bite the bullet and try every once in a while.
  40. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

As a rider, this is good info to read about. But I never split lanes (when cars are moving at least). I think it's illegal in MA but I'm not doing it with an RT anyway.
  41. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Good news, now we know 12.4 will at least be interesting. I thought the idea of using idle Teslas' processors to help do training is beautiful. Tesla better pay me for the energy drain, though! lol
  42. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

I think the original idea of Dojo was a totally custom designed chipset, but now they've pivoted to using off-the-shelf hardware instead. Why not, it probably saves them money. Whatever "Dojo" becomes, it's just not the same Dojo, but that doesn't mean it won't do the same work or better...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

I'm not quite getting your drift, FSD "will have to deal with it" regardless! (If it wants to keep Tesla in business...)
  44. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Why fortunately? FSD cannot deal with it.
  45. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

In the FB beta testers group, some people keep posting how great FSD is, no interventions in approximately forever, yada yada. So that makes me wonder if the intersection down the street (which I traverse approximately 50% of the times I leave the house) would qualify as an edge case? It sure...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

I actually don't need a patch on things like ferries (which are moving all the time) and cruise ships (much slower oscillations that don't affect me.) When diving, though, I have used them for 5 days in a row with no side-effects aside from the dry mouth. YMMV, and apparently does, of course!
  47. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

That doesn't engage your vestibular system. LOL. Again, Scope patches for the win.
  48. lzolman

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

The Scope patches' only side-effect I ever experienced is dry-mouth. Which is annoying when scuba diving, but sure beats the alternative. When the dive boat reached the dive site, I'd have them put me in the water first, and I'd get going on down, and then I'd wait 10 ft below the boat after the...

Agreed, but I think the issue is that it isn't approved to take over, ever. Even if it would clearly be the only action that made sense.

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

In one respect I agree it's possible for some of us who are motion-sick-prone to train ourselves out of it to some degree. I did it while riding buses as a member of the L.A. City Youth Band. We were bussed to parades all over SoCal, and I really wanted to be able to read a book in the bus. I...
