Portable Solar Trickle Charge for Camping

I didn't end up doing this! It was an interesting thought experiment but I didn't find a practical need for it, and I was looking at a minimum of $1-2k to get panels plus inverter plus buffer battery needed to make it all work. I'll check out the kickstarter! Thanks for the recommendation.

    EAP upgrade coming back

EAP for $4k is a fantastic deal, since to me the vast majority of FSD's value is currently in NoA. That is priced very competitively with Super/Ultracruise, offers better features with automated lane changes and navigation, and also has wider applicability.

    Odometer on Model 3

I agree that there should be a user accessible lifetime energy usage meter. The car actually does track this information and it's available if your get Scan My Tesla. I believe it tracks total AC charging, total DC fast charging, total energy usage, and energy usage while stationary. With that...

"Elon’s tweet does not match engineering reality per CJ." - CJ Moore, Tesla's Director of Autopilot Software

Sure, but that also doesn't mean I can't roll my eyes when we have the millionth thread on TMC about someone being "punished" for being incapable of keeping their hands on the wheel or complaining that autopilot doesn't work well on a windy mountain road. I'm all for personal responsibility...

"Elon’s tweet does not match engineering reality per CJ." - CJ Moore, Tesla's Director of Autopilot Software

Absolutely agree. I personally think human driver + active safety features will probably be safer than city streets beta + human monitoring because of the complacency factor, at least for a while. On the second point, I sort of agree, although in general I support the philosophy that the...

"Elon’s tweet does not match engineering reality per CJ." - CJ Moore, Tesla's Director of Autopilot Software

To be fair, miles per disengagement is a much different metric than miles per injury. For a L2 system it's fair to expect plenty of situations that it can't handle at all or to the skill level of a human driver. Hopefully an observant driver combined with a L2 system is safer than a human driver...

"Elon’s tweet does not match engineering reality per CJ." - CJ Moore, Tesla's Director of Autopilot Software

Absolutely. If it's released to the general public in the form of a download button or otherwise it'll clearly be L2 for the foreseeable future and possibly forever.

Model 3 LR for LONG daily commute?

Thanks for sharing. It sounds like you are using the drive time really well. The grass is always greener on the other side I suppose. I was flying almost every week for work, and I was initially thrilled to take some time off and work from home. However, a year into it, I've discovered that I...

Model 3 LR for LONG daily commute?

This is a bit off topic, but what do you do in the car for those long commutes? It seems like that would be a perfect opportunity to cruise through some audiobooks or podcasts!

Standard Range Plus Autopilot Removed Remotely [by Tesla]

Although if someone paid $10k for FSD, they bought it within the last year and therefore should have known that they weren't getting a L5 autonomous system! The best thing Tesla could do is to change the name to reflect the reality of what people are buying to avoid confusion (or the less...

    random beeps

This happened to me as well a few updates ago. It seems like the there should be some other visual indication that the purpose of the chime is a speed limit warning for it to actually be useful!

Gaps between underbody cover and rocker panels

I had the same issue shortly after delivery too that was fixed under warranty. I believe it was a plastic clip or fastener that wasn't properly seated and it ended up being an easy fix. Good luck!

Why Autopilot Safety Claims are BS

To be fair, most of these scenarios apply to the non-autopilot comparative data set too! Underreported and mis-reported accidents impact both sides of data for sure. Rather than the absolute number of accidents or the number of accidents per mile, the key question to me is: what is a baseline...
  14. G

Why Autopilot Safety Claims are BS

But at that point, the crash isn't the "fault" of autopilot, so I think that's fair to exclude. Of course it skews the statistics when you are only supposed to use autopilot in already-safe driving conditions, but at least they aren't excluding accidents where the car is about to slam into a...
  15. G

Why Autopilot Safety Claims are BS

I more or less agree with cherry picking data, but Tesla does count crashes that occur just after autopilot was disengaged in their stats. So if someone sees an imminent accident and disengages autopilot and then crashes, that will still count as an accident with autopilot engaged.

    What if FSD doesn't materialize?

No I absolutely agree that those who bought before April 2019 are owed something different, likely some sort of refund of all or most of the price delta between EAP and FSD.

Sold my Tesla yesterday - No Sellers Remorse Yet

I couldn't agree with this more. My main participation in "social media" is posting on PlugShare these days 😂

    What if FSD doesn't materialize?

Ah my mistake, I didn't realize you were just complaining.
  19. G

    What if FSD doesn't materialize?

Also just a pet peeve, but why do people say "what Musk is selling" like his tweets override the marketing materials and contracts of a public company. I don't think Tesla has been as straightforward about FSD in past as they should have been. Even the name FSD is a misnomer at best. However, I...

    What if FSD doesn't materialize?

Unlike many, I actually read what I was promised when I bought my car. I'm sorry if you didn't. But for a serious answer, this is what you were promised. It specifically says these features do not make your vehicle autonomous. Autopilot and Full Self-Driving Capability
  21. G

    What if FSD doesn't materialize?

What does that have to do with anything? If the current L2 set of features is worth $10k to you, then go for it. If it's not, then don't buy it. For me, the 7 features included in FSD were "worth it" when I bought it for $6 or 7k (can't remember which). Have you looked at more basic driver...

    What if FSD doesn't materialize?

Sure, but as has been discussed in other threads, that's going to be a matter for the courts at this point. There is basically zero chance we're going to get a L5 system released to the general public this year. I'm not saying that you shouldn't be angry that you're not getting a L5 system, but...
  23. G

    What if FSD doesn't materialize?

Others have replied as well, but I think Elon has said FSD is available by the end of 2021. FSD in this context should not be read as L5 FSD IMHO. It should be read as "the L2 driver assist system known as FSD".

Almost ready with FSD Beta V9

"Won't something think of the poor police departments that are funded from excessive speeding tickets" has to be the worst argument against autonomous vehicles that I've ever heard :D. (I know this wasn't your only point and I agree with it be an interesting secondary effect from autonomous...

After what time has passed would you consider an FSD class action lawsuit?

Do you have FSD? I don't know if you answered your own poll, but do you plan on pursuing litigation?
  27. G

Should I get the self driving option for 10k or wait ?

Yeah if you get FSD today, make sure you are comfortable with what you are actually buying. Just keep in mind that Tesla is not promising that you'll ever get a hands off autonomous driving experience, so don't spend $10k in the hopes of getting that and end up disappointed. I personally thought...

After what time has passed would you consider an FSD class action lawsuit?

I am personally disappointed by the slow pace of rolling out automatic driving on city streets, and more disappointed by the consistent overly optimistic statements by Tesla and Elon, but this is the point that I always come back to. I can't believe there are people buying FSD in 2020 and 2021...
  29. G

After what time has passed would you consider an FSD class action lawsuit?

That depends on when you bought FSD. For me as a purchaser in 2020, Tesla never promised me a Level 4 or 5 system. You might have a case if you purchased in 2018 or early 2019.
  30. G

    FSD - Level 2

Again not to get sidetracked, but if you aren't in the industry you are missing a lot of nuance here. If anything the FAA was too pro business and gave the Boeing too much authority to essentially self-certify their aircraft. If you want to blame Boeing for the FAA becoming slightly more...
  31. G

    FSD - Level 2

I completely agree with this. The FAA regulations aren't onerous, and if SpaceX were better organized they could easily meet them. Aviation and space have too much of a risk of serious adverse human, environmental, or other consequences to be taken lightly. As someone in the aviation industry...

    FSD - Level 2

I agree, it's clear that additional caveats were added to the FSD page in 2019. Additionally, I think there is gray area between the descriptions on this FSD page (not connected to the ordering page) and what you see when your actually order a car. To me, Tesla promised me a specific set of...

New button to enable FSD Beta download?

    Thanks for the well-researched answer!
  34. G

New button to enable FSD Beta download?

How much deferred FSD revenue do they still have, and how much could be unlocked by allowing a download? Simplistically, I paid $7K for FSD with an early 2020 order. They promised 7 features, and one (autosteer on city streets) is missing. So my assumption would be that they can unlock $1K of...

Batteries are coming down in price overall.

Even Level 1 charging for apartments would be good enough for a big segment of the population. The average person in the US drives about 30 miles per day (I'm guessing it's lower in most other countries), and you can get 60 miles with a 12 hour overnight charge on the LR AWD with a 5-15. Unless...

Heat pump vs Resistive on Model 3

This other TeslaBjorn video shows that the heat pump equipped Model 3 heats up within 1 minute, and is way more efficient than the 2020 Model 3 with the PTC heater. I don't think anyone has convincingly compared total heat output yet, but anecdotally the total heat output from the heat pump is...
  37. G

    Heat Pump Limit?

The real question is, what is the total kW/BTU per hour output of the heat pump and how does that compare to the PTC heaters at different temperatures. There are some great videos out there that show how a household heat pump isn't really a good comparison to the Tesla Model 3 heat pump because...

2021 Model 3 Heater blowing cold air

There have been a ton of sensor problems with the 2021 Model 3 that result in cold air blowing out of the vents. I believe @Cybr.Myk in this thread had similar issues and had a sensor replacement. It's possible that there are additional performance limitation with the heat pump, but I think all...

2021 Model 3 Heater blowing cold air

In the videos that have been posted here and elsewhere it looks like there is a supplemental heating mode. They operate the compressor in an inefficient mode that generates heat directly. This is much like how the motors are used (quote successfully) in an inefficient mode to heat up the battery.
  40. G

    Heat Pump Limit?

It seems like the compressor for the heat pump has the ability to operate in an inefficient mode to generate heat just like the drive motors. That's the backup. So not a direct PTC heater, but there is a way to actively generate heat to supplement what the system is able to scavenge from outside...

    Heat Pump Limit?

Is #3 actually true? I have only been in -30F for a few days at a time. My 1997 Honda Civic at the time struggled to crank, but it did eventually start and drove fine (I idled it for 20 minutes first to be on the safe side).

Thanks, that's great info! Do you notice the rear stator heating up above the baseline driving level as well?

    About that "yoke" steering wheel

That's exactly my issue with the changes! They are solutions to non-existent problems. Every other radical UI/control system change we've had in the Model S or Model 3 before this was to improve functionality or usability. I'm just not convinced that there is anything to be gained from the new...

How much energy to preheat battery and car from 20F?

I'd imagine there's a balance to be had though depending on temperature and usage. For short drives, preheating for longer than a few minutes could literally double or triple your energy consumption (for instance for drives of a few miles to the store). This is all adding to the battery cycle...

    Heat Pump Limit?

Did you happen to see (through the app or SMT or having a thermometer) how cold it got in the car? Also, is this an dual or single motor?

1st Electricity Bill since purchasing the tesla.

1st Electricity Bill since purchasing the tesla.

That seems shockingly high. I'm in Michigan and am averaging 320 wH/km for short trips, including often setting cabin heat to 72F with seat heaters on for my girlfriend's preference :D. Generally it doesn't make sense to preheat for that long for short trips, unless your car is encased in ice...

I wish the Model 3 had the new Model S steering wheel

I'm in the same boat. My visceral reaction is that I don't like it, but to be honest, I also thought that about the Model 3 interior that I absolutely love now. I'd certainly be willing to give it a try. While I still don't think there's a strong technical or performance reason for the U wheel...

I wish the Model 3 had the new Model S steering wheel

I am all for being non traditional in return for actual improvement in performance, experience, or efficiency. Single pedal driving is a revelation, the Model 3 touchscreen and limited physical controls is efficient and allows for UI changes through software. It's possible I'm just being a...

I wish the Model 3 had the new Model S steering wheel

I understand the concept, but is that actually legal? Is the limiting factor the shape of the steering wheel, the size of the wheel, or something else? Either way, I think having a non standard shape and sensitivity for a steering wheel is not a good UI/UX practice. Every other car in the...
