EV's to pay Road Tax from April 2025

I make my own electric onsite, on the farm, but when this electric goes to the farmhouse, I have to pay tax on it (as a benefit). But anyway, I think this tax could easily put off EV adoption for the cheaper 2nd hand market, because it makes them look less attractive than a £0 tax diesel.

EV's to pay Road Tax from April 2025

You are right of course. Some ask me as an EV owner: I'm looking at a 2nd hand EV (my old car isn't running all that well etc), maybe 2 year old, to 'do the right thing' and reduce my costs on fuel, servicing, tax etc How does it work out? In the past I used to say, if you can charge mostly at...

EV's to pay Road Tax from April 2025

A fair point indeed. I'm just trying to look at this from a view where: Average man (or a friend) in the street walks up to you and says 'nice car, should I go electric, what will it cost me?' I now know the answer: 'stick to the diesel car you already own, as it's the cheapest and most...

EV's to pay Road Tax from April 2025

OK, thanks for that... So now diesel 4x4s cost the same as EVs to tax (except the first year) If you have no home charging, then a regular (efficient) diesel will probably cost similar to fuel as an EV. But the EV is way more expensive to buy (thus higher road taxes) Similar cost to fuel (if no...

EV's to pay Road Tax from April 2025

OK understood, So since the road tax is based on CO2 grams/mile (I thought it was?), this sends us a message that my son's diesel is better for the environment than an electric car. So we should use diesel cars.

EV's to pay Road Tax from April 2025

OK, so from what I can understand: My son's 2012 Kia Rio 1.1 diesel which is £0 to tax will remain this. My Model 3 will be £165 to tax Is that what will happen when this kicks in? No doubt I'll go along with this if so, but seems a big turn off for EV uptake to me.

Tesla asking for votes on SuperCharger locations [UK and Ireland]

to be honest they know where all the cars travel to and from as they have our data. They know where and when we charge, even on non tesla chargers.

    Starlink UK

Not sure it's available yet... (for UK) although if not, v soon. Looks very expensive per month. Also given our starlink speed is dropping off currently (down from around 250 to 150 and dropping) I think I would be wary of advertised speeds vs real speeds. No doubt the mass roll out of starlinks...

    Starlink Dish - Lightning Protection

I live in the countryside and the starlink is quite exposed here. I have the pole it's mounted on earthed to a ground stake, with thick copper flat band. I used to do a bit of amateur radio, and the starlink is on the antenna pole I used to use. For me it's grounding static build up to earth...

    CC distsnce between cars

Never noticed this, as I only normally use 6,7,8 (think 8 is the highest... isn't it?). I always stay well back from the person in front, as it doesn't help you get there faster, and you might drive into them.

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

we have a 30kw array on the farm, 2 strings. looking at my graphs from a few days ago when there was reasonable sun, string 1 was getting to about 10.5 kw, but string 2 was reaching 11.0 kw. Having said that my panels were installed in 2012, so by now there could be some low level shorting in...

Phone key no longer working after update(s)

I buy rugged android phones these days, usually Ulefone (cos I like a battery that lasts a week, and is drop proof) I never can unlock my M3 unless the phone screen is on and app open. I think android is too aggressive with backgrounding apps. Tried all kinds of settings on the phone, nothing...

    Tap the card

I had this problem constantly since getting a phone with Android 10 or later. If the screen is off, can't open the car or drive it. Turn on app with screen on, works perfect. I set not to background the app, but I think Android 10 and later is very aggressive with app backgrounding (to save...

Today I drove an ICE !

Sorry about that... Looking at it now, ICE cars do seem ridiculous, apart from fast re-fueling, I can't see the benefit. Cheap to buy I suppose... I still need my pickup for towing and farm use, but would love to get rid of it for EV pickup ASAP.

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

The other day, when v sunny, and we were not shredding paper (weekend)... We hit 80kw (might have been a little over, 82?) export. If are onsite usage is very low and it's sunny the PV will hit 30kw , and the CHP does 54.5kw (after parasitic load) So we get quite close and I always like a bit of...

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

with regard to this, I have little to offer... Except when I've dealt with the DNO to get export connections for my kit (90kw export in my case).... They seem to have a rule book they follow, if you try to deviate from that, you get told 'no' , there's no negotiation. If you don't fit the...

Getting the Pi and Node red running, probably a 15 min job, (not hard). The getting of the data arriving in node red is where you have to think... Also MQTT, modbus, database connectors etc are all available for node red, just a couple of clicks and their installed, all from the browser...

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

Given the complexity and custom method your looking to achieve, and probably various modding going forward, the only way I can see you getting this to work is to make your own custom program setup. I have a fairly complex setup of my own, with 2x 22kw chargers, 30kw PV Array and 56kw Combined...

    M3 not sleeping

most cars, mine included, seem to sleep for 24 hours, then wake for 30mins, then back to sleep. (approx) Imagine it's to check/charge the 12v battery. More than this (i imagine) would not be normal.

Charging at BP fuel stations [in UK]

You've done better than me, the BP chargers always seem to have broken screens whenever I've tried them. I now avoid them, they seem to be about as good as the ecotricity chargers (which isn't saying much) OK as a last resort only... (in my opinion)

How dangerous to leave house with only phone key?

so yes as said, In my case (android) in the settings: set NFC to on tap & pay to on. Now with screen on, goto car and wave back of phone on the door pillar and it's like using the key card. Chris

Calculating Energy use over a Year

Agreed, if you go with 3 miles per 1 kwh you will probably be looking at it fairly pessimistically. You should normally manage better than this. But winter use etc, it'll be about this.

How dangerous to leave house with only phone key?

For me my android phone has very aggressive power saving which stops the tesla app working unless screen is on. (PITA) So I also have a key fob which I use sometimes. If the bluetooth plays up or is slow to connect to the car (often for me), then I use the NFC function on the phone. Turn on...

    TeslaMate [megathread]

I changed the code to get the library off the web automatically... you don't need to mess with that, you just need to set the broker IP address correctly and the topic subscription to match. edit: I think the subs should match what you have already

sorry for the zip file attachement above, but the forum doesn't seem to play nice with posting HTML code. No idea why Edit: another thing for this to work, the MQTT broker will need websockets enabled... See the bit about port 9001 in the conf file: port 1883 protocol mqtt listener 9001...

    TeslaMate [megathread]

Here is some code in HTML and javascript that I put together from bits across the web and some of my own. For this to work you will need a webserver running in your network to upload it to. You also need the MQTT library: mqttws31.min.js uploaded to the webserver. (and linked through correctly...

    TeslaMate [megathread]

so the MQTT is not a webserver, you can't type that into a browser, you use a javascript library to pull the reading into the browser, using a 'subscribe' method. I will post some code

    TeslaMate [megathread]

What can MQTT do....? So for me an example of some things. MQTT is the central IoT broker that receives messages and responds to subscriptions. So let's say I make a small low power (cheap about £10) microcontroller (ESP32) to read temperature of the downstairs in my house. The controller is v...

it would seem then that perhaps with teslamate the broker is installed as well. so firstly would need to see if the broker is reachable from anywhere on your network. i use this on my linux PC (windoze version also available): MQTT Explorer and point the above program towards the ip of the...

    TeslaMate [megathread]

so you need an MQTT broker in your network somewhere, or on the hardware that's running teslamate. I have an internet of things (IoT) server running all kinds of stuff in the house (and around the farm), it's running Node Red and Mosquitto (the MQTT broker) Then (in my case since I'm using...

Home Charge Points Discussion and Suggestions [megathread]

3 phase is effectively 3 live cables and 1 neutral and earth. The 3 phases are out of phase of each other on the ac side. So on 11kw you'd pull only approx 16amp per phase instead of 32amp on a single phase supply getting 7kw. It keeps your supply more balanced as you are pulling equally on...

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

Firstly write off 1st Nov to 1st Mar as near zero output. This time of year sun is low, always cloudy and short day length. I'm currently doing about 2.5 kwh / day on a 30 KW array.

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

My experience with solar panels in the UK. I have a 30kw (3phase) array on a farm roof here. Max peak output today has been 1.5 kw and 2.5 kwh generated total. OK OK, yes it's a cloudy December day, however my view is, consider winter output to be almost zero in the UK. Keep that in mind when...

    M3 SR+ 150 miles on full charge

If you get caught short on energy, go at 50mph on the motorway (just follow a lorry on inside lane). The range will go up a shed load. Done this in our leaf in the past when I thought I was going to run out and the range is way way better. Although a very frustrating drive. Better than running...

Any way to split out home charging from regular energy bill?

    I can't handle it! - A Rant

Yeah nice thread there Nick. Yes I have to explain this to every 'new' passenger. Getting in and out again. lol. I suppose it makes the car tesla-ry. (not sure how to write that) It's one of those things that looks nice from a distance, but practically very confusing initially.

    anyone 3 phase charging?

Yes, I live on a farm, 3 phase charging at 11kw always. if you have 3 phase I highly recommend using it. As a general rule most people try to balance their load across the 3 phases.
