    CA residents: AB 1139 discussion

I mean, this totally IS a Tesla Energy topic. Annoying that it keeps getting moved to a different forum. Net Metering and battery storage and Tesla’s largest market for solar is all much more relevant to Tesla Energy forum than Political Smackdown forum.

    CA residents: AB 1139 discussion

It seems like they’re sticking with this “Grid Services Charge” of roughly $10 per installed KW of roof solar, so in our case we’d be paying $130 for, uh, having solar? With powerwalls, we don’t really need NEM to make the economics work. Will PG&E let you cancel NEM and receive NO compensation...

California Utilities Plan All Out War On Solar, Please Read And Help

I've sent a few emails off to my government representatives on this proposed NEM 3.0. My main point to them was that these proposed changes would seriously degrade electrification's competitiveness with gas powered things (cars, heating, appliances, etc). If they really want to have an equitable...

PG&E and other CA utilities looking to 10X solar energy rates?

Hi al, I just noticed that the CPUC is taking proposals and comments for NEM 3.0 here in CA. This would establish new billing and net metering starting in 2022/2023. https://www.cpuc.ca.gov/nemrevisit/ Reading through the Utility proposal slides, it appears they want to completely gut Net...

    Powerwall Manager SmartApp for SmartThings

It looks like my Powerwalls updated themselves and now my beloved Darwin’s Den SmartApp doesn’t want to stay logged in anymore. Did Tesla change something on the auth side, I wonder?

    Powerwall 2 Vampire Drain

20 watts per hour is basically nothing. My desktop computer when the power is OFF uses 10 watts. A typical home draws 200w-300w just in random vampire drain. A big battery with powerful inverters and liquid cooling drawing 20W at idle is actually a minor miracle!

    Correct :)

    Solarroof.cool

Agreed that site is super *cool* :) I think Tesla is slightly mistaken if they think that power density doesn't matter, though. We have two electric cars and have just swapped over to a heat pump for heating. 20kWh per year out of 13.3kw of panels is just barely going to cover that usage, and...

    Solar Roof layout

How’s the net metering rules where you live? I agree with @Ampster, it’s a lot easier to over-panel at first then to add later. 5kw looks like it would cover about 50% of your pre-Cybertruck usage, so maybe only 30% with the Cybertruck. I concur about 2 powerwalls and more solar if you need to...

    Solarglass powerwalls not for me

Well, that 2100 map is 2C average rise, we're at 1.2C already and accelerating (5mm sea rise a year, used to be 3mm 5 years ago). So its unclear when we'll get to 2C, but it could be well before 2100. Also, the average level isn't what you're worried about, but rather the top of a king tide...

    Solarglass powerwalls not for me

If I lived on the Florida coast I wouldn't be as worried about whether my roof would be "in fashion" in 30 years. Maybe I would be more concerned about the lack of a true waterproof rating on the Powerwalls.

    Solarglass Roof - V3 - any customers?

If you're not going to be in your house for a while, don't have anxiety over increasing rates and possible shutoffs, and only look at the payback time, I don't think you should necessarily spring for it. Better to have the Cybertruck :)

    Solarglass Roof - V3 - any customers?

This is obviously a very personal decision, but lemme make a couple points in favor of solar/powerwalls for a minute: If you drive 25K miles/year for 12 cents a kWh in a Model 3, that's about $750/yr in "gas cost". So not too bad at all. However, its quite possible that cost will go up in the...

    Tesla Energy is horrible

I think there’s definitely some truth to that. There is a fair amount of backlash among younger people about talking to a human, especially when that person may be a less-than-truthful sales person and/or under-informed because they are working a not particularly well paid job. That...

Wallbox Quasar: seems like a great power backup option

The vertically integrated nature of Tesla means they can easily solve this issue if they have the will. They could release a new wall box that supports bi-directional and WiFi and pings the Supercharger servers to see if the vehicle's electrons came from a free Supercharge. They just seem to...

Wallbox Quasar: seems like a great power backup option

A first gen Leaf or Kia Soul should work, and probably cost less than 2-3 powerwalls installed . That being said, hopefully Tesla supports bi-directional soon. Elon’s been talking about it almost as long as he’s been talking about going to Mars. If the Cybertruck has a 220V output inverter...

    Powerwall Efficiency

There is certainty an economic case for the Powerwall, at least at the grid operator level who fire up a bunch of expensive and dirty peaker plants as the sun sets on grid scale solar arrays. Whether the grid operators chose to pass on these costs or savings to customers is another matter. So...

    New XL Order

They’re probably doing 3-4 Delta inverters with 4 strings each, so you might be OK. Sometimes they’ll upgrade you to Solaredge +Optimizers if you ask, although maybe not with the new rock bottom pricing.

Grid down, cold, and can't charge PWs?

If there is such a limitation, it’s surely a software one. Powerwalls can only pull energy from your house, which they can energize as well. The text on the website seems to indicate the preconditioning also happens on solar, so even the current software implementation would only be a major...

Cleaning solar panels and solar tiles

We don’t need to re-invent the wheel here, there is a ton of data from grid-scale solar operators on “panel soiling”. They clean a control panel and measure its variance to soiled panels. The data shows that most locations only lose a few percent performance between rains, except in areas where...

Grid down, cold, and can't charge PWs?

    SolarCity Home Gateway needed anymore?

Do you have Delta or SolarEdge? It’s possible they can remotely update one but not the other. I know for a fact they can do OTA updates for Delta.

    SolarCity Home Gateway needed anymore?

I have Delta 5.2TL’s and the Solarcity Neo gateway. Tesla Energy is able to do remote firmware updates of the inverters with the gateway, they had to do it for me once to correct an issue I had with inverters going offline sporadically.

    Tesla launching Solar Roof V3

Based on V2 roof performance, it seems like the efficiency is more like 25-30% less not 10% as mentioned on the call. So you’d have to factor in 25% more solar roof power to even out the cost comparison. Maybe they’ve made a big step with V3 on this, but if they had it seems like they’d...

    Panasonic vs. Hanwha?

I think they generally dropped Panasonic as a vendor a few months ago when they went to new cheaper set modules in 4/8/12kw sizes. They only buy Solar Roof tiles from GF2 now, and generally pretend that GF2 doesn’t exist. Q-Cells are fine if Tesla Energy customer service isn’t bad in your area.

Powerwall 2 Degredation vs Charge capacity

No, the Edison rep is not correct. You send power back to the grid net of whatever your house is using. The reason it doesn’t work during outages is some (somewhat questionable) rules around grid-tie inverters and anti-islanding, like CA Rule 21.
  33. Odiemac

Powerwall 2 Degredation vs Charge capacity

It’s all about what Tesla has set max charge voltage cut-off to. iPhones very aggressively push the max voltage per cell to something like 4.25V. Tesla cars are something like 4.1V at 100%. I’m hoping 100% on a Powerwall is something like 3.9V or less per cell. I’ve been waiting for someone to...

Need Advice in South Florida - go with Tesla or local company for Solar/Powerwall system?

    Going Plaid

Nice lap! We actually entered a Model S P100D in the June Laguna Seca event, and it wasn’t anything like this! PG&E Rate Schedules: "Home Charging" (EV2-A) Goes Live vs. Others

Oh yeah, no way that PG$E and the CPUC will allow individuals to play in the power market as producers for long! I don’t see that necessarily as an issue unless they start jacking up minimum connection charges, which I’m sure they’ll do. Then just cancel NEM agreement and find fun ways to use...

PG&E Rate Schedules: "Home Charging" (EV2-A) Goes Live vs. Others

I guess it depends on your power usage. We use 12,000 kwh a year and are guaranteed to generate 20,000 in the first year. After year 25, the panels are guaranteed to have at least 80% of their generation ability, or 16,000 kWh a year. Not only that, but this “stupid” amount of solar with three...

PG&E Rate Schedules: "Home Charging" (EV2-A) Goes Live vs. Others

I guess I don’t know how to reconcile CAISO Supply and Demand charts. Their supply shows big curtailment for non-renewable sources, but the demand doesn’t. Nor do their totals seem to add up o_O
  39. Odiemac

PG&E Rate Schedules: "Home Charging" (EV2-A) Goes Live vs. Others

It seems like the CAISO could take about 20% more solar in the grid mix if all other sources were curtailed during the day, although naturally it’s hard to curtail Nuke and Hydro (streams need to keep some flow for wildlife). Since the Utility-scale producers are already being asked to curtail...

    PG&E discontinuing EV-A rate

Our setup and consumption is pretty similar to yours. I’d be very interested in your experience if you do decide to do it, especially the process to add a Powerwall and how Tesla manages that, as well as how Tesla manages off grid customers. One thing I would do is add some sort of generator...

    PG&E discontinuing EV-A rate

I ordered my system with the understanding that PG&E couldn’t be trusted, and I sized for 100% December usage. That being said, they could still raise minimum monthly charges to $30-50, or whatever they want. Even if you plan for utility deviousness, there’s not much you can do about it...

Powerwall 220 in to charge powerwall??

Wow Your Powerwall is already connected into your home's 220v circuit in a bi-directional way. The only thing preventing you from charging it via the grid is the terms of the Investment Tax Credit in the US. That being said, Stormwatch does trigger a charge from grid ability if Tesla detects...

Newer to Solar, Deposit Placed & Tesla is Currently Engineering Solution: Colorado

Tesla will probably try and use Delta inverters and Q Cell panels unless you ask for something different. If you have shading, definitely worth it to ask for the SolarEdge with Optimizers. If you don’t have shading, then it doesn’t matter too much. Panasonic panels are slightly better but they...

PG&E Rate Schedules: "Home Charging" (EV2-A) Goes Live vs. Others

That all makes sense, but the lowest cost PG&E off-peak plan has been steadily climbing over the last few years as solar proliferates. Off-peak EV-A used to be 9.7 cents back in 2013, but its climbed a full 50% in 6 years. Maybe PG&E is deciding that it needs to make its margin off its richer...

Tesla will not upgrade its own systems

Agree with the points being made here. What’s interesting is just how divorced the solar business is from typical Silicon Valley startup philosophy. It’s a ground-and-pound endurance and relationship game that more closely resembles running a small government than a startup. Tesla wanted...

PG&E Rate Schedules: "Home Charging" (EV2-A) Goes Live vs. Others

I'm not sure the math will necessarily pencil out, especially since I don't think you can take the 30% ITC with just a battery system without solar. The amortized cost per kWh for our 13kw solar plus 3 Powerwalls over 10 years is about 26 cents per kWh. This is assuming battery and solar are...
