If I were to guess (and it's merely a guess), they build lots of cars and then match them to the orders. That would explain why we don't get our VINS until literally a week or two before delivery.
An update on mine is that now Tesla believes they can have the car as early as Tomorrow (Sunday)...
Never mind... Tesla has already contacted us saying that they have matched us to another car, so I will update the spreadsheet with that information! Delivery scheduled for Wednesday, Sept 26.

What in the world! I didn't have the EDIT button, so had to have the showroom folks enter a change ticket (or something like that) back on 7/28/18 for the white seats. They have yet to make the change. I just got off the phone with the 888 Tesla, who said he sees the change and is waiting for it...
From what I have heard and read on the forums, it appears that current owners that ordered before the ordering was available to all (the flood gates opened) received some priority. If you ordered after that, current owners (supposedly according to Tesla rep) are not given priority.

Yes, I have the white interior in my Model X. Feels super soft and seems to clean up easily. My seats show some blue tinge from wearing my jeans, but it cleans off easily. We've had a few spills, nothing has stained. That's why we asked to switch our M3 order to white seats, when that option...

Yep, highest VIN is now 92929. At this pace, our VINs for M3s will need the extra digit... 100000. I want that one! (Actually I want ANY VIN! ha)
