    Freeport Illinois charging?

Are there any Tesla owners in Freeport Illinois which might be willing to let me use their Level 2 connections? I’m planning on visiting for a couple days in the middle of August, and I’m worried about being stuck with only 110v charging.

Blog Musk Says Cybertruck Doors Will Open Automatically

Auto opening sounds like a misfeature. I wouldn’t want it opening every time I squeeze past it in the garage, especially if my hands are full while I’m taking the garbage out.

Zion and Bryce Canyon in peak summer season

We stayed at the Bryce Canyon Inn in Tropic, and we were there the week before the 4th of July last year (2020). There were two Teslas the first night but only one the second. As usual, I left my cell phone number on my dash in case a third showed up late at night.

    Window not fully closed alerts

This does indeed seem to work. Did it yesterday, and haven’t seen any issues in more than 24 hours, and I’ve used the car a lot in that time.

    Accessing the rear parking sensors

I have essentially this same problem, detailer knocked one loose. Where do I look for all the bolts? I ran into a Tesla mobile service tech at a supercharger last week, and he told me that pulling the bumper cover off was the only way to fix those sensors.

Gen 1 mobile connector using 220v

Gen 1 mobile maxes out at 40 Amps in the US, but numerous people have had the plugs get hot and melt down. It’s best to manually adjust the amps to 32 to guard against this. The Gen 2 mobile connectors max out at 32 Amps, I believe.

    Supercharger - Winnemucca, NV - 4 v3 & 4 v2 stalls

Looks like time for Tesla to expand the Winnemucca super charger. All four stalls are full, and I’m the fourth car waiting. Lovelock was full earlier too, but it cleared out quick.

    2016.5 90D Charging Questions

The car is set to ideal range, not rated, probably. Flip the setting to rated and see what it says. A full charge on my 2016 90D with 60K miles is about 272 rated miles. It was 294 when new I believe.

Ask an electrician to give you a quote. It won’t be cheap, but may save money in the long run for some people.

    TPMS Failure?

Sensors are widely available. I got one from the America’s Tire where I usually buy tires. Sounds like your tire shop may be sub-standard.

    Model S Tires

The car is heavy. And even those of us that are sedate drivers still accelerate quite a bit faster than most of the ICE cars around us. It’s so effortless and quiet you don’t even notice. I’ve gotten about 25k miles out of the original MXM4s, which were down to 3/32s when replaced. My...

SF Bay Area Residents - Are You Really Saving Money vs Gas?

I live in San Jose, and unlike you have very low power demands during the day. 82% of my usage is off-peak and 10% is partial-peak. My entire electric bill is now less than I was spending on gas for the Prius I had before getting my Model S. I think you definitely need to put in a solar...

Advice for trip from Hwy 395 to Berlin Icthyosaur State Park in Nevada

I’m considering a trip to Berlin Icthyosaur State Park in Nevada. Anybody know what the route between Tioga pass/395 and Hawthorne Nevada is like? I have a 2016 90D with 19s, full charge is about 277 these days.

    90D Rated Range

It’s probably not accurate. You probably need a deep discharge, full recharge cycle to recalibrate it.

    Have you noticed better efficiency?

Check your tire pressure. Warmer weather equals higher pressure and better efficiency. Also less energy spent on climate control.

Suggestions for a Norcal road trip

We did Lassen NP in 2016. We stayed at the Best Western Antelope Inn in Red Bluff, and I charged the car full before we left. Wh/m was frightening on the way up, over 600, but the way back is all down hill. We went in from the south and came out the north. It took 135 miles of rated range to get...

Philadelphia, PA to Niagara On The Lake Charging Advice

If the house has multiple 120v outlets in the garage, you might be able to find two that are on different sides of the transformer. If you’re handy, you can build an adapter to use the two outlets to get 240v at 12A. You’ll need some parts and wire and a voltage tester or multimeter...

    This is bad, right?

Another first gen UMC bites the dust. On the slim chance that you get another first-gen UMC, you should turn the amperage down to 32. There is a reason why the second-gen ones max out at 32.

    Tesla as a 1st car?

I’d suggest a used Toyota Prius. It has regenerative braking, good efficiency, and isn’t horrendously expensive to repair. Parts are available in days, not weeks. It’s small enough to park easily, but has good interior room. She can move up to a Tesla in four years or so.
  28. G

    How bad is this?

There’s a reason why the 2nd generation UMC maxes out at 32 Amps. The gen 1 14-50 seems to be marginal at 40 amps. I’d replace at least the 14-50 adapter. If anything looks discolored in the slots of the drop cord, I’d replace that end too.

    2015 vs 2016 - 90D Range?

I have a Feb 2016 build 90D that was originally a service loaner. With 2500 miles on it, range was 292. With almost 45000 miles on it range is 281. It degraded pretty fast the first year then stopped.

    First Road Trip Questions

I’d suggest you buy some of the extra adapters for your mobile connector. At last the 5-20 and maybe the 6-50. Welding plugs are probably more common in North Dakota.

How often do you have to reset your HPWC?

Since the time I made my original post, i’ve needed to reset it many times. It has probably been reset 10 times in the last two months. I’ve seen several utility company trucks in the area, so I’m hoping the problem is on their end.

    Mirror seems to change position.

Just lock and unlock, or did you get in and shift to reverse? There are different settings for forward vs reverse, presumably to make parallel parking easier.

    Where all the NorCal'ers at?!?!

I’ll second this. My weekends are barely long enough to wash the car and do my laundry. And during the week? Forget it.

Mid-October Cross County Drive - 21" summers or 20" winters?

Mid-October Cross County Drive - 21" summers or 20" winters?

I think I’d take the winter tires. You’ll almost certainly see some snow in the mountains. Hopefully not a lot, but it’s better to be prepared.

    Daily Rated charge question

Two causes. One: the first year is the worst for battery degradation, so you lose a few miles due to that. Look up one of the many threads on that topic. Two: this time of year the weather is cooling off. This affects the voltage coming out of the cells a little. My car drops 3 or 4 miles of...

    Did I Make a Mistake Buying a Quick 220 w/L6-20 Outlet?

This is correct, and exactly what I’m doing with my 10 gauge extension cord. I made a pigtail with a 6-15 plug on one end and a 5-20 receptacle on the other. The I use the 5-15 or 5-20 UMC plug as appropriate to the original source. Yes, this runs the 6-15 at 16 amps, but the construction is...

    Did I Make a Mistake Buying a Quick 220 w/L6-20 Outlet?

The Gen1 UMC will charge on 240v delivered through a 5-20 adapter. I have an array of adapters myself and carry 75 feet of 10 gauge cable when I’m going to the boonies. The cable has a 5-20 receptical on one end, and I can swap out the other end as necessary. This will provide about 10mph...

    TPMS for full-size spare tire?

Due to having accident damage repaired, I find myself with a extra rim that's in serviceable condition. Since I also kept a tire from the last time I bought new rubber, I'm close to having a full size spare for the occasional trip off the beaten path. The question is whether I should obtain...

    Ground Fault Cable Error Message

I think it sounds like you have a bad mobile connector. If you have a voltmeter or a test light you can check the 120v outlet. Between the small blade and ground you should get around 120V or the light should light up. Same between the small blade and big blade. Between the big blade and...

Leaders and Managers: Flashy Tesla at Work?

Another sign that working in Silicon Valley is like no other place on earth: There are now probably between 20 and 40 Teslas in the lot at work on a daily basis. Most are Model S, but there are a few Xs, and the number of 3s has really started growing now.

Tesla tech is great, but other companies are starting to push

Uh, my wife’s 2012 335i interior is holding up better than my 2016 MS and it has 10k more miles on it. I think Tesla really ought to improve material quality a bit.

What to carry for 5-15 or 5-20 charging if that's all I can get

I built my own 75 foot 10-gauge extension cord. I used industrial grade connectors on the end, and it’s obvious that 5-15 and 5-20 male ends are identical construction expect for the direction of the one blade. Therefore the 5-15 should handle just as much current as the 5-20, so I just leave...

California to Mexico City and back. Feasible or too difficult?

After having spent a week in CDMX at the end of February, I’m not sure I’d want to take my Model S into the city. We ended up using Cabify (a ride-share service) and got around all week for about $50 US. I’d still love to do this trip, but it’s not going to happen soon.

Heart vs Head (S vs 3)

This depends on whether you’re generally a good driver or not. I grew up driving a ‘79 Bonneville, and own a full size pickup in addition to my S. The S is much easier to maneuver than the pickup. That said, my wife has BWM 3 series and one of the things she doesn’t like about the S is the...

    Highway distance driving

If you own the trailer and know that it’s sound at higher speeds do what you want. The rental trailers that I’ve seen recently are probably not safe at 55. Also remember stopping distances get longer at higher speed. I’ve had enough idiots pull in front of me and then slow down while I was...

    Highway distance driving

I bet if you draft the trailer, which should be traveling at 55 anyway, you should have no problems. Try it before hand just drafting the truck at 55 and see how much your wh/m improves. This should help you estimate how much you can stretch the range.
