    Mounting a Ham Radio

I agree. Trying to work 40 meters from a car is going to be a challenge. Me? I only work VHF/UHF 2m/70cm bands as I use the MX for emergency services work. AFA DC, I do NOT use the accessory outlet but the Trailer Brake outlet under the carpet on the driver-side outer wall. It delivers far more...

Free FSD for April -- but not for me?

I'm beginning to think that the .8 branch (for those with ultrasonic sensors) will need a different version. Nope, I love my sensors and was lucky enough to have those on the car when it arrived in Feb of 2023.

Thanks. That fixed it. I wish they would (also) put that setting under "Doors" where it belongs. :)

I got an update late last week 2024.8.7.

Falcon Wing Doors don't fully open

I do usually park in the garage. So sure, the GPS might have thought the car was in the garage. But... when I arrived at the theater in an open parking space, it did the same thing. When we went to a restaurant afterwards, the same thing.

Free FSD for April -- but not for me?

I have a 2023 MX LR and have not received the "free" FSD. I hear reports that many have already received it. Tesla Service did not respond to my request for information. I also have a PhD in impatience.

Falcon Wing Doors don't fully open

I have a 2023 MX with ultrasonic sensors. This is my second MX which gave me an option to "fully open at this location" for the falcon wing doors. This is no longer an option. Now I see a "Quick open" in addition to the "Open" button (which is not mentioned in the Owner's Manual). When I am...

2023 MX Low voltage (15.1VDC) Battery Recharging

I have a 2023 (Feb) MX. When rechecking the OM, I discovered that I had referenced the wrong year (despite having Googled for MX 2023). The OM says to open the air vent at the front of the vehicle and connect the exposed wires to a 12VDC jump-start battery. I carry such a battery but it's in the...

2023 MX Low voltage (15.1VDC) Battery Recharging

I watched a YouTube video that said that once the car is fully charged, the low-voltage battery will no longer be charged. So, when one leaves the car on the charger, but still not driven, (as in the COVID shutdown) the low-voltage battery would (in his words) "go flat" (run down). I find this...

Will Tesla Transfer my FSD from my 2017 MX to my 2023 MX bought in Febuary?

I traded in my FSD-enabled (and paid for) 2017 MX for a new 2023 MX in February. Now I hear they're transferring the FSD to new vehicles. Does this apply to my purchase? To whom do I ask (officially)?

Trailer Brake 16VDC power turns off--why?

I found the issue. Overheating diodes (I only had three in series) opened the connection. I built a new 3x3 array that seems to work better.
  13. Beta V

Trailer Brake 16VDC power turns off--why?

I wired nine silicon diodes in series (3 sets of 3) to drop the voltage. It measured 15.1 and I got it down to about 14.1. Yaesu said that 14.1 was fine--15.1 was not. The root cause of the failure was the diode assembly overheated and opened the connection.
  14. Beta V

Trailer Brake 16VDC power turns off--why?

I have a ham radio connected to the trailer brake outlet (exposed behind the driver-side outer wall carpet.). This outlet provides 15.1 VDC and can support up to 20 AMPs (per spec). I've used this port for years on my 2017 MX without issue. However, on my 2023 MX, the outlet turns off...

    Compare Model X and Y

Someone started a thread on Facebook about the differences between a new MX and a MY. This is my response. I did some research and found that detailed comparisons are plentiful, but none seem complete. Tesla's has a bare-bones comparison...

Installing a Yaesu FTM400 Ham Radio in my 2023 Model X

Yes, it's been up since Mid-March. There are FTM-400s around as people transition to the FTM-500 that's just being released to retailers in limited numbers. Be sure to rig a circuit to lower the voltage from 15.1 to below 14. I used three silicon diodes in series to do just that. I mounted the...

    Dead Key Fob--Twice

I agree. There seems to be a manufacturing flaw that affects some key fobs and shorts out the circuit slowly draining the battery. When they replaced my fob we finally got one that has worked fine for over a month. Fingers crossed.

    Using a CCS Combo Adapter

I didn't opt for free supercharging when I bought Angel II, my new 2023 MX. I notice that she does support the CCS adapter (based on the settings). So I bought a third-party CSS adapter from Amazon and tied it out. I had not used an Electrify America charger before so this might be part of the...

    Private Party Sale -- Advice?

I came to the same conclusion. I used the superchargers only on road trips and those were infrequent enough to not get supercharge credit when I bought the car (for another $3000). By having the option to use other superchargers (with the adapter), I would be more comfortable on those long trips.

    My 2023 Model X Saga

The sound the vehicle makes in reverse is "by design." Some state and federal laws and the NHTSA now require a warning sound to protect pedestrians and the visually impaired. I read a story that implied that the sound can be changed. I have not tried this. Check out "boom box." I also saw a...

Nope, it failed again. It took longer, but by 6PM about 30 hours later, the fob failed to work--I had been testing it every few hours. I pulled the battery and tested it--2.9V. I have a new battery and it tested 3.5V. I tried the new battery and the fob worked again. I then retested the old...

Turn Signals and Critical Buttons made easier to feel

I'm also a pilot so I'm used to a yoke with embedded controls. BUT we don't rotate the yoke past about 90° so the buttons are all accessible. The kids that designed this UI approach need some guidance (IMHO). Sure, I like more visibility on the driver's screen.

    Dead Key Fob--Twice

I had a pair of key fobs on my 2017 MX that worked fine (mostly). Sure, early on, my entire car tried to file for divorce and would not talk to me but after a counseling session at the service center, she never misbehaved again. When I took ownership of my $110,000 2023 MX, I was told I would...

Turn Signals and Critical Buttons made easier to feel

I like to keep my eyes on the road. Every car I've owned has had a turn-signal wand on the steering column (except for my 1930 Model A Ford). My 2023 MX yoke has no wands/stobs/levers on the steering column. Instead, they have buttons on that must be located and touched to operate. Okay, cars...

    Locks and being locked out

When I picked up my 2023 MX, I was disappointed (to say the least) that they did not include even a single key fob. Instead, I was given two black plastic cards, clearly marked as Tesla keys. I was also told I could use my iPhone to get into my car once it was within Bluetooth range. Thankfully...

Installing a Yaesu FTM400 Ham Radio in my 2023 Model X

I'm using the Larsen 70/2M NMO. I might try adding a ground strap but the surface area of the frunk seems enough for a good counterpoise. I like the in-view approach of the ProClip as it does not mean I have to take my eyes off the road (as much) as an out-of-view approach. The new FTM-500 has a...

Loss of voltage on low-voltage ports--an explanation

When I was setting up my ham radio to use the trailer brake socket which delivers low-voltage DC current, the power went off for some reason. This was not an issue when I did the same with my 2017. I also depended on the power remaining on when I left the car so the radio could retransmit...

Installing a Yaesu FTM400 Ham Radio in my 2023 Model X

Thanks. That makes sense. Update: I'm still fighting off COVID and can only do a few hours of work on this at a time. Once I routed the power cable from the trailer brake outlet, I tested the power and I got 15.1VDC as expected. The harness was too long so I cut it (one conductor at a time) and...

Installing a Yaesu FTM400 Ham Radio in my 2023 Model X

Just as when I installed my FTM-400 in my 2017 Model X, I faced a whole new set of challenges when it came to reinstalling the radio in my new 2023 MX. I researched the issues first and was advised that the newer models (including mine) had a "16V" bus. I tested the cigarette lighter (CL)...

    I need a 12VDC high-amperage source for my ham radio 2023 MX

I plan to mount the antenna on the frunk lip. I didn't want to drill any holes and a mag mount won't work for obvious reasons. So, 16 VDC. Not cool. I'll look for a converter. The cigarette lighter outlet says it supports 12VDC @ 12-14 Amps. That might be enough as the radio draws about 10 A on...

    I need a 12VDC high-amperage source for my ham radio 2023 MX

I just traded in my 2017 MX. I had my ham radio connected to the trailer brake port under the carpet on the outside wall under the dash. It worked fine. Today, despite both me and my wife being pretty sick, we ventured into the bowels of Seattle and picked up a new 2023 Model X. White/Black Long Range. It took quite a bit of work to get to this stage--some of which was my fault. We lost the title to our existing 2017 Model X so I had to make...

Has anyone seen this orange blob?

I returned to Angel yesterday on a warm day to find there was a large throbbing orange blob on the screen. I did not see a message to explain it or a way to get it to go away. I rebooted and it didn't appear. Any ideas what this means?
