Model 3 12v Battery issues, monitoring, Aftermarket replacement

Although I’m only and electrical engineer and NOT a psychologist, I have to say the above effect has more to do with psychology than electrical physics.

Long term(ish) Model 3 owners, how reliable has the car been to you?

SN 0016xx - 45000 miles (DEC 2017 build) No major issues, a handful of minor issues. I see no reason it won’t keep going strong. Way less maintenance than any other car I’ve ever owned.

Thinking about becoming a two-Tesla family but have some Q's

A useful tidbit for multi Tesla owners, a keycard can be enabled on more than one car at a time. Means you only have to carry around one key card as a backup for both cars.

    2 Tesla Charging setup

Be aware that the Gen 3 HPWC doesn't support load sharing yet. The manual currently says that it will in the future. With Tesla that could mean anytime between this afternoon and 2021. Get 2 gen 2 HPWCs, or try 2 enelx juiceboxes - I am currently using those in a load sharing group for my 2...

    2020.4 Anything New?

This version fixes a charging bug. Previously, the car would not “follow” changes to the available charging current made while charging. For example if the car was charging at 20 amps and the EVSE changed from offering 20 amps to 30 amps, the car might or might not increase charging to 30 amps...

    Pre-2019 HW3 upgrades

The problem is that it could literally be tomorrow that there IS a difference between V2.X and V3.0 functionality if Tesla decides to push an update out. I would much rather have the hardware installed and ready than be waiting for it while people who didn't pay for it over a year ago are...

V10 Vampire drain warning: check Summon “Standby Mode” setting in car

I just discovered that the Smart Summon feature on V10 has a button next to it labeled “standby mode” When this is on, the car will not sleep so that it responds more quickly when you go to summon it. The problem is they default it to on. This will cause a fairly significant power drain...

Model S to the Nürburgring Next Week!

Sorry man, the drive inverter in a Tesla is about as similar to a plug-in ac inverter as a nuclear plant is to a briggs & stratton 10KW generator. Teslas use the same circuitry for both drive and regenerative braking, and unless design decisions were purposely made to limit the braking, it...

    Charge port door sensor fault

There’s a little diamond shaped flat piece of metal that’s supposed to be glued to the inside of your charge port door to tell a sensor when it’s closed. I bet if you look you won’t find one on your door. They have a habit of falling off. Door will operate normally except it won’t open when you...

Why does the P3D have better acceleration than the LR3D (current versions)?

There are three different rear drive part numbers in the parts catalog. Two of them say mosfet in the part number, one says IGBT. These are types of transistors. Tesla uses silicon carbide mosfets in some of their drive units, very efficient but very expensive. In others they don’t.
  22. L

Why does the P3D have better acceleration than the LR3D (current versions)?

It’s more complicated than just software. There are two different rear drive units, one used in the RWD and P3 and one in the AWD. The RWD and P3 unit is capable of more power than the AWD one. I believe the difference is electrical, not mechanical. Early on when AWD was first introduced...

Two J1772 charging issues: EVSE schedule and sharing.

dlieu- I have exactly the same problem you do. Using two juiceboxs to charge two M3s. You are experiencing two separate problems - 1- If the M3 goes to sleep in “charge now” mode, it will not wake up when an EVSE pilot signal is presented. If the M3 wakes up for other reasons, it will...

Model 3 12v Battery issues, monitoring, Aftermarket replacement

Just interested Wennfred, in what way was it any better than the stock battery?
  25. L

    AWD Or RWD

I have one of each. RWD was remarkably competent on snowy roads this winter even on the stock tires. If the difference in price between AWD and RWD is a lot of money to you, get the RWD. If its not a lot of money, get the AWD.

Model 3 12v Battery issues, monitoring, Aftermarket replacement

Hcdavis3 - I’m not sure why your battery needs replacement, it might be a service bulletin to replace certain battery serial numbers ( I am not aware of the existence or non-existence of any battery service bulletins) It might also be specific to your car/battery. Tesla is able to track the...

Model 3 12v Battery issues, monitoring, Aftermarket replacement

its gonna be a while before anyone has to replace one out of warranty. Hopefully by then 3rd party suppliers will be cross referencing the part. Otherwise Tesla would be the obvious source.

Model 3 12v Battery issues, monitoring, Aftermarket replacement

Hey I don’t blame you for not believing some random dude on the internet, so no hard feelings. Atlas BX are cheap flooded cell batteries you can get from Menards if you google it. I wish I could share more, but you’re just gonna have to take my word on it, which on the internet isn’t worth very...

Model 3 12v Battery issues, monitoring, Aftermarket replacement

Also, the parts catalog shows only one Battery part number and it is clearly vented via a tube.
  30. L

Model 3 12v Battery issues, monitoring, Aftermarket replacement

You don’t have to take my word for it. Just go look at the battery. It has a vent tube connected to a hose that is routed overboard. AGM batteries are sealed and have no vents. Also consider that all this battery has to do is keep some low power electronics running when the main batteries are...
  31. L

Model 3 12v Battery issues, monitoring, Aftermarket replacement

Tesla is definitely NOT refitting the batteries with AGM. As I said before it is a really cheap flooded cell lead-acid.
  32. L

Model 3 12v Battery issues, monitoring, Aftermarket replacement

The original battery is actually a very cheap (to Tesla) conventional lead-acid battery. Tesla didn’t want to spend a lot of money for a battery that doesn’t really do much other than keep some low-draw electronics running when the main battery pack is off.

? about Chargepoint at SFO Long Term Parking

Scheduled charging is location dependent, so it should start charging the moment you plug it in. I don’t know if it will “top off” properly or not. Your session with charge point may time out after a while.

Model 3 12v Battery issues, monitoring, Aftermarket replacement

My wife’s LR is a year and a half old with 30,000 miles on it still on original 12v battery BTW. Mine has 5,000 also on original battery.
  35. L

Model 3 12v Battery issues, monitoring, Aftermarket replacement

I don’t think your Tesla is gonna like that battery. Tesla charges and discharges that battery based on a very specific battery specification. Have you been having problems with the OEM battery or is it just for the weight savings? 11.5/3900 = 0.3% reduction in weight. You I don’t think you’ll...

Model 3: Three phase charging too sensitive to voltage drops?

Are you charging to 100%? The charging rate does taper when the battery gets to about 90% or so.
  37. L

Tapping a 110/220v outlet off the AC charger port

The wires from the charge port to the battery pack in the Model 3 are used for both AC and DC (supercharger) charging, so you couldn’t tap into them. You would have to tap into the AC inside the battery pack after the relays that switch the wires between the AC charger and the battery, which...

Suspension upgrade to early Model 3

That one is a LR RWD - as are all Model 3s with the firm suspension . (Only on those made in 2017 approximately) I also have a LR AWD that’s only about two months old.

Suspension upgrade to early Model 3

I would recommend doing it. Ride is much less harsh. I did not notice any reduction in cornering ability, though I don’t drive it on a track. Service invoice says: “Correction: Retrofit Springs, Dampers, and Rear Lower Fore Links With Updated Components”

Suspension upgrade to early Model 3

I have both a relatively new 3 with the current suspension and an older one (16xx) that was converted to softer suspension. They ride almost exactly the same.

    How low is too low?

I know someone who has a 1xx serial number car and it has lots of issues. Mostly rattles and squeaks. Tesla says that they don’t cover Noise Vibration and Harshness issues after one year, so consider that as well. I have a 16xx serial number car with over 23k miles on it and have had no major...

Model 3 charging limited near 50 kW

In my experience superchargers work great (i.e. charge > 100KW) even in the cold if I'm using them for a road trip -- that is driving for a few hours until SOC ~10% and then charging to about 60% and then repeating. If on the other hand I just stop by a supercharger while I'm running some...

    Does EAP avoid potholes?

It most definitely does not avoid potholes! In fact it will blithely head straight towards massive chasms without a care. Bent two rims when I had EAP change lanes - it headed straight for a major hole between the lanes and between my reaction time and the slight swerve you get when you...

HPWC installation question - humming noise coming from conduit. Is this normal?

I have #6 thhn in 3/4” conduit running about 30’ to my EVSE. ( juicebox) I also hear a slight buzzing/humming from the conduit when charging. Perfectly normal.
  46. L

Why would we see same miles added with 8.32 kW or 7.68 kW charging?

Have you looked at the actual voltage delivered while charging? If at work you’re actually only getting 200v and at home you’re actually getting 245v, you’d be charging at 8kw at work and 7.84kw at home which is very close to the same power.

    Direct Charging v Juicebox

I’ve been using a juice box for my 3since January. I actually like it better than the Tesla cable since it keeps track of charging session statistics online. I bought another J1772 adapter ($95) so I could keep one in the trunk and one attached to the juice box.

    Charging and model 3

True - however 2 cycles per day is actually a much higher cycle rate than a typical RV site which has at absolute most one cycle per day and likely much less as most sites are occupied for more than one day at a time and are also not occupied every day. Also, in my experience RVing, I have had...
