Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Refresh Model S LR doesn't actually have "only" 670HP - more like 750HP, and it weighs about the same as the Ioniq5N...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Gauntlet officially thrown: 0-60 mph: 3.0 seconds 1/4 mile: 11.1 @ 123 mph Car & Driver Hyundai Ioniq5N instrumented test... Considering that the current Model 3 Performance already matches or beats many of the new Ioniq5N's performance bogeys it's easy to be optimistic about the refreshed...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Exactly - when/if actual testing demonstrates a performance difference, THEN I could understand being miffed. In the meantime, it's just useless speculation, IMO.

    Snippiness 2.0

When I was tracking my car multiple times a year, I had track tires. Not worth it to me now that I only do an event or two a year. And I absolutely understand what I give up when I run my car on UHP summer tires on the track. But hey, please find more ways to be offended - super useful way...

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

All the engine power, suspension tuning and brakes in the world can’t show their best without tires that allow the car to perform its best. All tires are a compromise of some type, but when maximum street performance is the goal for any high-performance vehicle, the OEM tires are usually UHP...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

So much b*tching about something that hasn’t been shown to affect anything in the real world. Seems a bit premature at best, and a waste of time and energy to boot… 🤷‍♂️

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

Yep, and the video also proves my overarching point that all-seasons are a performance compromise. They're outperformed by the summer tires in all but one non-winter test, plus feel the best to drive, and they're outperformed by the dedicated winter tires and the all-weather tires in all the...

The entire context of that test shows a clear performance advantage for the PS4S, ironically. But keep digging!

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

And in the test I quoted the difference in wet and dry braking was big - like 10%, and that was only from about 50mph. The difference would likely be greater from higher speeds Please tell us how worse braking is a compromise worth making?

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

It’s long been clear that all you really want to do is argue, so we’ll leave it at that. Meantime, please be sure not to drive anywhere near me in case you can’t stop in time to avoid a $15K accident because you saved $700 on tires.
  14. Zcd1

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

Please link us to test results showing that Performance all-season tires match or beat the performance (acceleration, cornering grip, braking) of UHP summer tires in anything other than snow. The non-existence of such test results demonstrate the performance compromise that all season tires...

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

Right, and I’d never argue that a high performance sedan isn’t a performance compromise compared to those - it is, plain and simple, and nobody would suggest that the sedan would keep up with a GTRS or go off-road like a Defender, because it won’t!
  16. Zcd1

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

When anyone is ready to discuss or try to refute my original point, which is that all season tires are a performance compromise, I’m happy to continue. Instead though, people have argued about things I never said, or what they thought I meant or said. That’s what’s hilarious and sad at the...

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

Conveniently ignoring steering feel and ultimate traction at all times - LOL - okay. Why buy the Performance version of the car if none of that is important? Why do mfrs equip their highest-performance cars with UHP summer tires and not all-seasons?
  18. Zcd1

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

That isn’t what I said at all. I said all-season tires are a performance compromise - because they are. I never said “don’t do that”, nor did I suggest anything else about what others should do.
  19. Zcd1

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

For the 2-4 track days I do per year, yep, those days I’m compromising performance. The other 99.4% of my driving time I’m not. All seasons are a performance compromise 100% of the time.
  20. Zcd1

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

There’s no compromise when running the right tire for the conditions. In my case, that’s UHP Summer tires in summer and Performance Winter tires in winter. But again, do whatever works for you - just don’t suggest that all-seasons are best for anything - they’re a compromise regardless of the...

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

And I’ve never said anything other than that all seasons are a compromise, and that people can do what they want, including me. They are a compromise - this isn’t an opinion, it’s a fact. Run what you like, but don’t pretend that UHP all seasons are anything but a compromise.
  25. Zcd1

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

Yep, running all-season tires is definitely easy. I prefer the responsiveness and obvious, demonstrable performance advantage of UHP summer tires in summer: If you don’t care about shorter braking distances, more lateral grip and better aquaplaning resistance, that’s fine. I do.
  26. Zcd1

Discussion: All Season Vs Summer Tires

Choosing to hamstring the performance of your car in all conditions by running all season tires is your prerogative. I choose not to do this. 🤷‍♂️

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The PS4 A/S is so loud that whatever other benefits it offers are irrelevant to me. Better all-seasons are still "no-seasons" compared to a winter/summer setup, and I do sometimes track my car... in summer. ;-)
  28. Zcd1

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

"All-Season Tires" are "No-Season Tires" the way I look at it. Compromised regardless of temperatures/conditions. I've runner/summer/winter setups on my AWD cars for more than 20 years, and the performance and peace of mind is well worth the minor inconvenience, IMHO. YMMV.

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I definitely prefer the seating position and overall visibility in the 3 vs. the S. And you're not wrong with regards to passenger space, though cargo space goes to the S with the hatchback and huge cargo area. Ideally, a 3P with close-to-Plaid power would be perfect for me. 🤷‍♂️

I'm presuming this is sarcasm, since the current M3P also has a 162 mph top speed.... I mean, it's not bad, but it's no actual improvement. Also, no EV is likely to have any sort of top-speed bragging rights for quite some time, if ever...

I hafta say that the LAST thing I’d like to see is any sort of special, must-be-activated “Launch Mode”. Thank you for proving my point. (creating races so that the V-8 RWD doesn't lose). Would you like to compare dig/drag race results? I start from stoplights multiple times every day. The last time I was over 120 mph on the street was literally MONTHS ago.

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Hey, if you have verified test results that refute the 60-120 mph claim I made, please by all means post them. Even funnier, even if the race were 1/2 mile from a dig, the Mustang never catches the M3P.

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]
