How worried should I be about buy a higher mileage M3 LR (70k+)

My M3LR has over 123,000 miles on it with the lower control arms and a 12V battery being the only items of consequence that I’ve replaced in the last five years. If the price is right, go ahead with your purchase.

How and when is the Tesla-brand service worth it? Do outside services affect the warranty?

As far as tires, and suspension, and brakes, and consumables, Tesla is just like other cars and warranty voiding isn’t a thing.

De-badged rear Model 3 Long Range...

It shouldn’t affect anything. The car is still a dual motor and would be sold as such. Go ahead and pull all your emblems. Make the car your own.

De-badged rear Model 3 Long Range...

I pulled the Dual Motor text the same day I got my car. People will think I have a standard range, but it looks cleaner.

    High Mileage Rental 3

I picked up my LR in June 2019 - currently at 120K+ miles. The only non-normal maintenance issue I’ve had are the upper control arms. I’m keeping it until the next big leap in battery design takes place.

About to lose it with rats in my Model 3

Keeping rats out of an older structure is a losing proposition. Your only real solution is to trap and kill or relocate the vermin. A cat will do this for you.

    First road trip coming up

We always go to 100% when our meal or overnight allows it. For overnight at superchargers we charge to 90% before bed, move the car, then first thing in the morning plug the car back in for that last 10% while packing, breakfasting, and getting ready to leave. We never want to hog up a stall...

    First road trip coming up

Back in September we drove our M3LR to my son’s wedding in Spokane, WA from Raleigh, NC. It was 5,880 miles in three days out, five days back. We had ZERO issues with charging or stops. We planned our overnights at hotels with destination chargers or superchargers in their parking lots. We...

Any tricks or tools for removing the aero wheel center caps?

Yes, they just pull off. Pull on one or two of the outer edges. They’re tough to pull off, but you want them that way.

    Key fobs, key cards

My wife doesn’t own a cellphone and uses the passive fob exclusively. She says she never takes it out of her pocketbook.

    Battery life span

I have a 2019 M3LR that currently has over 188,000km. I expect to be still driving it with double this mileage.

Why choose Model 3 over Model Y if you can have more trunk space?

The M3 is Thor in Infinity War, while the MY is Thor in Endgame.

Model 3 aluminum aero guard replacement bolt

When my front right bolt bent due to an impact I replaced the torn-up Tesla shield with an aluminum one. The problem was the nut or mounting fixture was gone, and you can’t reach around behind the shield to hold a nut to tighten down the bolt. I ended up using two-part five-minute epoxy to...

    High mileage check-in

With our recent round trip from Raleigh to Spokane (Raleigh - Spokane round trip) our June 2019 M3 LR is sitting at 114,000 miles. The only issues I’ve had are a dead 12V battery and defective Hansshow power frunk garbage. We test drove a MY before the trip and didn’t like the handling as much...

First Long Road Trip Model 3

We tend to keep the charge low for speed, as everyone has said. Our stops are always around eating or a bio break, so the time & charge vary. We’ve found we can’t have a casual lunch before the car is at 100% and must be moved.

    Raleigh - Spokane round trip

We just returned from a 5,880 mile, nine-day (travel time) round-trip from Raleigh to Spokane. We were concerned about the number of available supercharger spots on 90 going west as it was Labor Day weekend and many of the sites were 150 kW and 4 stalls, but this wasn’t a problem at all. The...

Cost to Tesla Model 3 for 100k miles?

You folks in California are stuck with some sucky electric rates. We pay $0.12/kWh here in North Carolina, making a Tesla very economical to drive indeed.

1st road trip on new M3P. Any advice?

We use Tesla Superchargers exclusively on our long trips and plan ahead to always use one for meals and bio-breaks. Sometimes we have to rush a meal because the car is ready before we’re done. As KenC said, using ABRP before your trip to scout out the stops goes a long way to relieving range...

    2022 M3 LR...First 1500 mile road trip (3k round trip)...suggestions?

We do a lot of long trips (going from NC to WA & back in Sept.). We had two flat tires within the first month we owned our 2019 M3LR. These were local and allowed us to repair the tire in our garage with the plug kit and mobile compressor we’ve had since the car was new. I found the plug...

Going on first road trip (around 285 miles one way).. New owner.. Just a few questions. Thanks

I always charge to 100% at home before a long trip because the cost is so much lower than charging stations (unless you’re lucky enough to have a free destination charger at a hotel). I eek out as many electrons as possible before stopping to charge except when a stop is convenient for bio...

Model 3 key fob: are there any known issues?

My wife’s key fob has worked without issues for 3+ years. I have a mouse that loses battery contact that’s solved by aluminum foil enlarging the battery footprint. Also, I’d try a different brand of battery to rule that out. It’s a strange issue, for sure.

Mobile Charger: Do I need it?

We use ours when visiting relatives out of state. Having one, especially with the 220V connector, allows you top off at any campground with power.

    Yup, that’s it. Thanks!
  32. Petermcg

    What bolt is this?

What type of bit do I need for this? It’s too rounded to use a star bit. These are the bolts anchoring the seats (2019 M3).

model3 FSD or autopilot for 300 miles commute one way

Previous to owning my M3 LR I owned a Lexus ES350 that I bought new and kept for 13 years, selling it with well over 200,000 miles. It was a great car.

model3 FSD or autopilot for 300 miles commute one way

I commute four hours a day and Autopilot makes it bearable, so I continue to make the drive. But no amount of (current) car automation is going to replace the time you lose commuting. Driving up and back once and staying there during the week is your only viable option IMO. Of course, a full...

    Windshield replacement

I had Safelite fix a star-pattern chip in my windshield just last week. The only thing visible now is a pinhead-sized dot. It has a lifetime guarantee against spreading. I’ve had three rock strikes in 50 years of driving. I had to replace two windshields on my (ex)Camry within two weeks of...

Can any shop do wheel alignment

I got mine done for $200 at Chapel Hill Tire in Apex. They said they work on Teslas all the time. I also took it there to replace my upper control arms.

Should I buy a demo model 3 w/300 miles that already had drive unit replaced?

If they’re selling it as new it has the new warranty. The fact that the rear drive unit has been replaced is irrelevant at this point. It’s new.

    Tinting rear window

That’s bovine scatology. I’ve had full tint on my M3 for four years without issue, by a company that’s done many Tesla rear tints.

    Model 3 for commuting

I’ve a daily 206 mile commute (90% four-lane divided highway) and use FSD autopilot for all but 15 minutes of my drive. The occasional phantom braking (once every other day) isn’t bad if you’re paying attention like you should. You’ll learn to anticipate when a situation arises (like cars...

    Window Tint Too Expensive

I had Llumar’s IRX put on all my glass (except the windshield), including single-piece full roof coverage. I chose 40%, it cost $625, and I’ve been very happy with it. Shade Custom Tint here in Apex does excellent work.

    Creaking noise over speed bumps

Yes, it should be fine. I put about 1,500 miles on my car between when the creak first appeared and when my control arms were replaced (due to scheduling). It’s super annoying to listen to but shouldn’t be a danger.

    Help Fight the FUD

At 89,000 miles I just had to replace my upper control arms. 2,000 miles ago I purchased tires for the second time. I replaced the 12V battery once, cabin filters and wiper blades as needed. That’s it. Pretty economical. Oh, and my after market power frunk went bad, but that wasn’t a Tesla...

    Raleigh to Spokane routes

I’m making this round trip later this year and am asking for recommendations for which route to take - via ND, via SD, via NE, or via KS. All four east/west routes are navigable, but which one seems to be the most scenic/least hassle? ABRP & Tesla navigation don’t provide real-world...

    Question about charging levels

My daily commute is 206 miles round trip with no at-work charging. For three seasons I schedule-charge at home to 100% just before leaving and get home with 14-17% left (2019 M3 AWD LR). In cold weather I also precondition and return home with 4-7% left. In super cold weather like last week I...
