Cycling in London I can tell you AVAS is very useful. EV's and Hybrids going at slow speeds are hard to hear at the best of times. AVAS helps a lot.
Have a blind friend who for him something like sound is his main safety mechanism when dealing with roads.

The alternative is we have to use the horn a lot to warn people, similar to how cyclists use their bells. I'd much rather have a subtle AVAS that having to use the horn as a potential warning in a built up area.
Potentially the noise pollution would be much worse.
 
Maybe not only the car as the solution, phone manufacturers could have a function to warn people they’re not paying attention and a car is near. Put a low power transmitter in the car and the phone could do a bit of maths to determine if the car & phone user are on course for collision and beep in the headphones or put a message on screen to say look up.

Great for cyclists too :)
