Rear passenger door hinge stop

My 2015 85D is having intermittent issue with the rear passenger upper door hinge. This one contains the mechanism that stops and holds the door at different openning angles. It seems to be a sealed unit with no serviceable access.
My problem is sometimes it takes a little more force than normal and tends to make a loud breaking noise when moving to the next position. My thought is the grease.has dried out. Perhaps drilling a hole large enough at the top would allow some lithium grease to be injected in there.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Replacing the hinge totally would involve some door alignment work.

I’d give it a go ( and probably start with shooting some WD 40 at the spot where the hinge rotates - sometimes it will soak in and soften up old grease ). Nothing to lose since you would have to replace the hinge anyway if it fails to remedy the problem.
