Reengineering the Roadster: Custom Battery Upgrade for the Tesla Roadster

Yep, we've been testing it since November. Most works fine without any Tesla component in the pack now. Some known issues still are there, for which we need to change the implementation a bit, but nothing serious. Known issues are very specific things, like turning on the car while the cabin...

    Communication Problem - need reboot?

Your alert might also be triggered by a blown battery heater fuse or damaged heater. These are also under the cover you already opened. Marked them in red in the picture attached.

    Roadster 3.0

@Marius, if you are concerned about the longevity of the 3.0 pack, I wouldn't consider installing an aftermarket pack for at least the next two years. The one I am developing, which Carl mentioned, has only logged about 500 km and is just a few months old, which are both not significant. That's...

Reengineering the Roadster: Custom Battery Upgrade for the Tesla Roadster

Taycan packs are more or less good to get, thats no problem :) It would be possible to get more kWh into the battery pack, but I thought I'd prefer the lighter pack vs. the longer range. Might use the available space for a 3 phase charger to make charging more comfortable in Europe, but not sure...

Reengineering the Roadster: Custom Battery Upgrade for the Tesla Roadster

Didn't set any performance targets. The goal of this project was/is to use a complete different Battery with its own Batterymanagement, well integrated into the original system, so including all error messages, etc.. Of course also had an eye on the performance, but that wasnt the main focus...

Reengineering the Roadster: Custom Battery Upgrade for the Tesla Roadster

Hello TMC, I'm want to introduce a unique project from our workshop: a custom battery pack for the Tesla Roadster. This journey started four years ago with an incomplete, damaged Roadster 2.5 in my workshop. It was missing an Energy Storage System (ESS), and after sitting 3 years in storage...

    Roadster battery cell voltages

It usually limits power, when the ESS Voltage drops below ~290V under load.

Anyone know where to find a battery replacement for Tesla Roadster for reasonable price in Europe?

Car wiring diagram is accessible here. Internal ESS schematic is only known by Tesla, but the above schematic shows all the external signals. Thats what relevant to the car... but then there's still the CAN Bus that needs to be satisfied :)

    BSM and BMB update problem

What errors do you see? BMB and BSM sending data on CAN? VMS up and running again with correct data?

    roadster without power, 12V problem?

OVMS needs to be calibrated to show the correct voltage. But even if its calibrated, its connected to the BSM and not the 12V battery, so voltage might be different anyway. 12V battery power is not needed to drive the car. Since the BSM is running and providing power to the display, the ESS...

3.0 Batteries from 2016 experiencing issues.

Bummer, that such a relatively new pack causes issues. Has this pack ever been deep discharged? If you or anyone who has a Roadster with this issue could capture a CAN Log of the Battery Bus while this error is being thrown and send it to me, I could tell what the issue is, for sure.

Survey: What Performance Parts Would You Want?

Hmm... 400 mls Range is nice, but I would prefer a lighter pack to also get better handling and quicker acceleration.

    Roadster PEM failure

The handle will be your problem. There's a microswitch in the batterycase, which is closed by the handle of the orange service disconnect handle. The small switch sits on the passenger side of the receptible for the plug in the batterycase.

Thanks, thats great. Will try that :)

Communications Problem Service Required VDS Message

@markwj is it possible to get a short trace of the actual CAN traffic on the vehicle shell of the OVMS?
