    Intelligent Octopus charger failures

I’ve recently had a number of times where I’ve woken up to find that the car hasn’t changed overnight. Looking at the Octopus app I can see that it didn’t create a charge schedule. If I turn off “intelligent” charging and then back on again it’ll create a schedule. Anyone else seeing this?

AP visualisation showing US-style speed signs

As per title, my car is showing speed limit signs in the AP visualisation (right panel) in US-style (square white signs) rather than the UK/Europe style. Anyone else seeing this?

    Phantom braking

Yeah, yeah - another thread on this... I recently replaced my 2019 Model 3 with a new Model Y. I never had huge issues with phantom braking on the old car, but jeez, this new Y is terrible! Maybe it's the loss of USS, or radar (but I thought this was all disabled anyhow back when all-vision...

Buying a car with outstanding finance

Can anyone provide any guidance on buying a used car with outstanding finance? I’m looking to buy a used Y from a private seller but the car is still on a PCP. The seller seems totally genuine and I have no concerns that I’ll be ripped off, but I’m unsure of the process. He's proposing that...

Model Y suspension on UK LR AWD models

I took a Y for a test drive when it was first launched and found the ride way too hard and crashy. But I drove a Y in the US recently (Performance variant as it happens) and the ride was fine. It seems that there was a suspension change late 22/early 23 that softened it up. But doing a...

    Buyer beware

I lived through sh1t like this with my wife’s ID3. It seems like the Fisker Ocean has the same sort of crappy software. It’s not all roses in Tesla land, but at least the basics work (most of the time).

Model Y Demo Drive in US

I’m on holiday in the US with some American friends. We discussed my Tesla experience and on the back of it, they wanted to try a demo drive at the local SC. So, I got to ride and drive in a US Model Y. A few observations: - Prices here are notably lower than in the UK once federal and state...

    Why so few models?

Highland is out. And it’s a pretty mild makeover. So despite Tesla now being the world’s most valuable car manufacturer, there are still only four models, all of which are designs that date back a long time in auto market terms - 2012 for the S/X and 2016 for the 3/Y. The Roadster looks dead...

    Crazy low residuals?

My Model 3 is now three and a half years old with about 42k miles on the clock. So, I'm thinking do I flip or stick (with an extended warranty). The car has been very reliable and it's still in great condition with only about 7% battery depreciation. But I did a test drive of a new Model 3...

    MG4

Took a test drive in an MG4 today - not as a replacement for the Tesla, but potentially to replace my wife's ID.3 which is slowly driving us mad with its laggy infotainment and generally awful software. The MG4 drives really well and it's very refined and quiet. But the interior quality really...

Public charging - experiences in Oct 22

We just had a week up in Northumberland and decided to take my wife’s ID3 for a bit of an experiment in doing longer journeys away from home in a non Tesla EV. Whilst we did get through it all, there were enough issues to remind me that we’re still not there with public charging infrastructure...

TopFit display - issues with headlight indicators with 2022.28.1

I got 2022.28.1 over the weekend. All good apart from the fact it’s screwed up the headlight indicators on the TopFit display. Now, the full-beam (blue) icon is on all the time and the headlights-on icon comes on when Auto high beam is activated. Turning headlights on/off does nothing. It’s...

    "Alcantera" dash wrap

So I eventually got around to wrapping the wood dash trim in suede/alcantera. Total cost £17 and about a half hour of fitting. This is what I used. Enough for two dash wraps: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B091GMR2GL

    Topfit Steering Wheel Display

I've been umming and ahhing for some time about the need (or not) for a speedo display above the steering wheel. My test drive of an i4 recently told me that I really do miss it, so I've been looking at options. I initially thought I'd go with an Android device so that I could get CarPlay as...

    BMW i4 - Test Drive

My Model 3 LR is coming up three years old so I'm sort of thinking about what may be next. Another Model 3 is a definite possibility since overall I've been pretty happy with the car. Despite it being a Fremont build, it's been reliable. No bits have fallen off and apart from some minor panel...

Pre Conditioning for SuC - is this right?

I did a long trip on Sun (to West Wales) and put the Aberystwyth SuC into the sat nav as the destination. Immediately after starting the drive, and with over 3hrs to go to the SuC, the message popped up on the screen telling me it was pre-conditioning for rapid charging. It eventually went off...

    Tarting up the 18" alloys

I've been running my 3 LR with the aero covers on for most of the time I've had it. I briefly pulled the covers off, but really didn't like the dark paint on them. So, I'm thinking of getting them stripped and powder coated in silver. It seems some others have done it, as below: Any...

Battery degradation - 14% in 2 yrs and 24k miles

My Model 3 LR is now just 2 years old and has 24k miles on it. It's been supercharged 42 times since new and 659 times at an AC charger (the joys of TeslaFi !). I've taken it to 100% fewer than 10 times. Range is now being reported as 267 miles (from 310 initially). That's a 14% loss and...

    Drone from running gear

My Model 3 LR is coming up to two years old and has done 22k miles. I’ve noticed over the last few months a droning noise that sounds like the bearings or similar that increases in volume with speed. It’s most noticeable on smooth, good quality tarmac where tyre roar doesn’t drown it out. Has...

Model 3 new tyres time - Vredstein Quadrac anyone?

My LR on 18” rims is now on 22k miles and the rears are down to almost 2mm, so I’m looking at replacements. Pure performance is not my objective but better winter performance is. So, I’m looking at some all-season tyres and have read some good stories about the Quadracs. Noise is also an...

    Reduced charging rate

My car has started reducing the charge rate on AC charging. It starts fine at 32A but after a little time (usually 5-10 mins), it drops back to 12A and stays there. I can see from the app that the charger is still advertising 32A (i.e. it displays 12/32). If I look at the car’s screen after the...

PV Solar - what the view in the UK in 2021?

I've been pondering whether a PV installation is sensible or not. We've got a large roof area that is SE facing so it should work well. I think that the feed-in tariffs are all gone now aren't they? Are there any other incentives? Can it be justified at all on economic grounds in 2021?

    SMETS 1 vs SMETS 2

OK - a question for the metering techies! I'm planning on getting a 3-phase meter installed just as soon as Octopus can arrange it (my house has three phases wired to the meter board, but only one is used at present). My current meter is a SMETS 1 device, connecting via the mobile phone...

Tesla have given my in-depth personal details to another owner!

I got a WhatsApp from an unknown contact today asking me about a Model S he'd just bought since it appeared I was the previous owner. I've never owned a Model S so this came as a bit of a surprise. On further discussion, it appears that he's been sent very detailed information about me, incl...

    TeslaFi - how can 5.22kWh be 10% of 75kWh?

OK, so this is TeslaFi's view of a journey I made this morning: Apparently, I used 10% of the battery and 5.22 kWh. But - 5.22kWh is a lot more than 10% of 75kWh, so what's going on? I can't remember what the car said the consumption was, but I'm guessing it was more than 257kWh/mil - since...

48.26 UI Changes - thumbs up or down?

So, the new UI. What are your thoughts? On balance I’m not a fan - mainly because the driving visualisation has got even bigger and I really can’t see the point wasting all that screen estate to something so pointless. Now we’ve got the map and music etc squashed up on the left. The biggest UI...

DC charge pins cover - a warning

I bought one of the little plastic covers to protect the two DC charge pins. Something like this: Hadn't used a SuC in a few months and arrived at one yesterday only to find the cover totally stuck. Levering the thing out via the lip just caused its top to come away from the collar so I was...

Some quick thoughts on the ID.3

We picked up my wife's new ID.3 yesterday. I've driven maybe 75 miles (and given it a good wash!), so hardly an exhaustive test, but a few initial observations: Positive things over the Model 3: Build quality is notably better. Panel gaps are perfect and even. Door and tailgate fit is very...

Ionity rates using VW "We Charge" card

It's still not cheap. To get to Tesla SuC rates you'll be paying £14/mon subscription! The question is though - does the charger know it's charging a VW? If not, you could presumably charge another car on the same scheme. It might make it more viable if you ran two cars and used Ionity a lot.

    Question for the electricians

If I wanted to install dual chargers on a 3-phase supply, would it be best to install each on its own phase, or to put them both onto a shared 3-phase? Is that even the right question to ask?

    I've ordered an ID.3

Not content with riding the rough seas of Tesla, I've ordered an ID.3 to replace my wife's somewhat arthritic Golf. I seriously considered an SR+, but she really wanted something a little smaller and a hatch. I also considered the i3, but range was a concern as were reports of poor stability...

Estimated Battery Degradation - Model 3
