2024 Eclipse Effect on Solar in California

I saw lots of people posting their solar production charts online that were near the path of totality. California was only about 30% occluded, so the effect was less. Here is my solar production chart from Silicon Valley. The effect on the California grid was similar. The interesting thing...

Tesla Pros app updated and renamed to Tesla One

I looked at app updates on my iPhone this morning and found that the "Tesla Pros" app was updated and renamed by Tesla to "Tesla One". I have only looked at this app superficially and understand that it is used to commission new systems including Tesla Energy products and Tesla Wall Connectors...

Choosing a Non-Tesla EVs to use on Superchargers

I am thinking about my next EV and the obvious choice is a Model Y. I am coming from a 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV that has a 41kWh Tesla battery, Tesla drive unit and Tesla 40A on-board charger. There were only about 2,500 of these made but it's been a good car for me. Anyway, I want to consider all...

    Downsizing Sub-Panel Breaker

I have a relative whose house has 400A service from PG&E. The main panel has large bus bars going from the meter socket to individual 200A main breakers. One main feeds the breaker bus immediately below and the other feeds 4/0 aluminum wire that goes to a sub-panel on the other side of the...

Weird Powerwall SOC change after 22.9.1 install

My Powerwall system updated to 22.9.1 yesterday at 6am. In the 45 minutes after that, the SOC reading reduced from 52% to 35% without any apparent discharge power flow. Has anyone seen anything like this before? The cloudy weather has not allowed the system to charge to 100% since then.

EVgo is finally installing High Power Chargers

EVgo has been a leader in DCFC infrastructure for non-Tesla vehicles. However, they have not made a significant move into the HPC space during the whole buildout of the Electrify America network that is pretty much dedicated to HPCs. That is now starting to change. They have had "prototype"...

    Overnight Outage and Notifications

I had my first outage since January last night. This is probably the longest I have ever gone without an outage since moving into the house in 2012. There was some discussion about outage notifications but I couldn't find the thread. The first screen shot is my iPhone lock screen. The Model...

Charging to 100%, then charging some more?

Has anybody else seen this behavior with their Powerwall system? My Powerwalls charge to 100% as shown in the app, then some time passes and it charges some more. This day is just one example but it has happened on quite a few days this Summer. I've never seen it before June this year. My...

    Powerwall Software 1.45.0

I saw a glitch in my Energy Usage chart that showed the Powerwalls went into Standby for a short time this morning when they should have been charging. Then I noticed that the Version is now 1.45.0. No idea what might have changed. The release notes only go to December 2019 and 1.43.

Supercharger - Walnut Creek, CA (LIVE 24 Oct 2019, 24 urban stalls)

There was a post on the SF Bay Area Model 3 Owners FB group with the picture below. This new Supercharger site is on the top level of the parking structure at the intersection of S. California Blvd. and Botelho Dr. in Walnut Creek. I did not visit the site, so I'm not 100% sure of the location.

Upgrading solar on PG&E NEM 1.0

I have been lamenting the small size of my solar system ever since I got my first EV. When I had the house built in 2012, I wanted to go for the New Solar Homes Program and get a 9+kW solar system funded by a huge State rebate. Unfortunately, the solar installer I picked during construction was...

PG&E Letter - Paired Storage Billing Update

I received the letter below from PG&E regarding the billing on my account that has solar and Powerwalls. The essence is that they are implementing a change in the billing system that will detect if and when you are feeding more energy into the grid than what your solar is supposed to be...

    TBC-Balanced Springtime Behavior

I have been a little frustrated with Time Based Control now that the sun is actually shining in Northern California. The Powerwalls have been discharging early before the Peak rate period starts. This is exacerbated by the fact that there is an offset of the rate periods now that Daylight Saving...

    Daylight Saving, PG&E & Powerwall

I am on PG&E in Northern California. PG&E's rate schedules still follow the Daylight Saving Time schedule that was abandoned in 2007. That means that from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in April, the rates schedule is shifted 1 hour later. Now that the vast majority of metering...

I got 1.31.0 on Wednesday 2 Jan 2019. Of course, the release notes are not updated to that level yet. There is no obvious difference.

    Firmware 1.23.0

My Tesla app started showing Powerwall firmware 1.23.0 sometime today. I have no idea what might have changed. The changelog page still has 1.21 as the most recent version with any notes.

    Powerwall 2.0 Backup Runtime Extender

I just completed testing my proof of concept Backup Runtime Extender for my Powerwall 2.0 system. It worked pretty much as expected. I was able to inject about 500W into a normal 120V household outlet and the Tesla App registered reduced household usage and reduced Powerwall output in Self...

    PG&E Billing after Powerwall PTO

I recently received my first PG&E bill after receiving Permission To Operate my Powerwall system. I received a "Black and White Bill" on letter size paper and my regular "Blue Bill" showed that my Service Agreement ID was closed. The service dates of the two bills overlapped, so it looked like I...

    Supercharger - Cupertino, CA (LIVE 28 Mar 2018, 10 V2 stalls)

    Tesla spotting in Taiwan

I am visiting Taiwan from Silicon Valley and was surprised to see a Tesla on my first day in Hsinchu. I am so used to seeing Teslas at home, I had to do a double take to confirm that I was really seeing a gray Model S here. It was turning toward the Science Park from Guangfu Rd.

8 Stall ChargePoint CHAdeMO + CCS site online in Mountain View

There is now a 8 stall DCFC site online in Mountain View, California. The site uses the ChargePoint Express 200 DCFC units that can output 125 amps to either its CHAdeMO connector or its CCS connector. This is the largest industry standard (ie. non-SuperCharger) fast charge site I know of in...

Clean Fuel Rebates from PG&E, SCE, SDG&E

If you are in California and have electric service from one of the 3 major utilities, PG&E, SCE, SDG&E, you can get a rebate just for having an EV. It's basically free money, so please tell everyone you know that has an EV to apply for it. PG&E gives a $500 rebate one time per VIN. Link: PG&E...

    PG&E NEM 2.0

As you may know, PG&E, a major California utility, reached the deployed distributed generation threshold that allowed them to change the Net Metering tariff for new distributed generation interconnections. The limit of 2,409 MW defined in the original NEM tariff was reached on December 15...

Hawaii Supercharger on new 2017 map

I was looking at the new 2017 Supercharger map on Tesla's site and there appears to be a future Supercharger in Hawaii. I guess the pin is on Oahu, likely for Honolulu owners that can't get chargers installed by their property managers or associations.

Going via Mohave SC to avoid Grapevine section of I5

Warning! PG&E E-9 Massive Rate Increase

I just reviewed the January PG&E rate increase and I must say PG&E is really trying to screw EV owners that have elected to stay on Schedule E-9. This is the "Experimental" rate schedule that was developed to encourage customers to charge their Electric Vehicles Off Peak. This rate plan has...

True added cost of home EV charging on PG&E

Calculating how your electric bill will change after you bring home your electric vehicle is not easy in California where we have tiered electrical rates. However, I have done an analysis of the true added cost to charge an EV in the SF Bay Area on PG&E. This analysis is based on actual...
