How Do I Responsibly Report a Powerwall 2 Hardware Safety Defect?

You're being so cryptic about it. Just state what it is. Whether or not you disclose the mystery now or by your chosen deadline isn't going to change the fact that there is or is not a hardware flaw that can electrocute someone tomorrow or next week, or if Tesla will need to recall or repair...

How Do I Responsibly Report a Powerwall 2 Hardware Safety Defect?

Why would anyone disassemble their own PW to corroborate your claims?

    Volt meters for troubleshooting

That's a big wall of text. If you don't know which wires are AC or DC, you should probably stop tinkering. Seems there's no point to measuring all the wires you want to. You should just get a clamp meter if you want to troubleshoot something, and a Kill A Watt to plug into an outlet. If you...

A Lot of 1 minute outages?

I've had them since the beginning. Never notice them unless I look in the app.
  5. T

    is this low production?

No, your math or modeling is wrong. You cannot pick a good day's production and multiply that value to estimate a year's production. Just like you can't pick an hour's production, let's say at high noon in May, and multiply that by 10h/d to estimate daily production. In May, you might get...

are insurance companies dropping folks with Tesla powerwalls?

Ok then, I hope they spied on my house last year when my premium went up, from $3000 to $4000 per year.

are insurance companies dropping folks with Tesla powerwalls?

Are we supposed to report solar install to home insurance company? Do they regularly drive around to each of their insured properties to do cursory inspections for new additions?

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

It looks more rugged for outdoors but less fancy for indoors? Does it have vents, fans, and active cooling?

Pre PTO, self powered, mode but still drawing from grid (Home consumption reported as half of real load)

For GW, you can log in as installer and for each CT there's a checkbox option to 2x the CTs on the 240V circuits.

We're on the fence about getting solar and would love some input

It‘s the Oregon state tax credit that made it crazy cheap. My 8.16kW install done by Tesla was $16400 minus 26% tax credit, no CA state incentive.

Solar Production dropped by over half!

You're missing the daily rotation of the earth that causes the sun to move across the sky. A 400W solar panel will only produce its maximum power at ideal conditions and the sun is perpendicular to it.

    Cleaning Panels Difference

Here's production numbers before and after cleaning of my 8.16kW panels via Hurricane Hilary, similar temp low 90F. So about 5-6% difference. Before: After:
  14. T

Solar production dropped ~33% after Tesla technician visit?!

Agreed. Your early numbers were wrong. A 11.2kW system, at this time of the year, under ideal conditions and panel orientation, would produce maybe 65-70kwh at most.

    Low Production and Neurio Inaccuracy

  17. T

My solar production crashed! What happened?

There was someone who recently posted that the dropouts in the graphs were fixed after they installed a wifi access point or extender near their PW/Gateway, making it seem like the dropouts were simply missing data points due to no data uploaded to Tesla from poor wifi reception.
  18. T

    Is this clipping?

No it is not clipping. You won't reach the rated 11kW unless the panels and sun are perfectly aligned and the temperature is 77F. There is efficiency loss as temp goes up.
  19. T

Powerwalls installed without CT on non-backed up loads

Also curious as to why your main house A/C isn't backed up. 125A limit? Typically A/C is the biggest power draw and running them off the battery during peak hours is a good way to avoid peak rates. And in case of prolonged power outage in hot weather like today, there's plenty of sun to...

How to confirm 2nd inverter is dead? Generation has cut in half

You can get or borrow a clamp meter to measure AC output of the inverters. You can measure the solar input also.
  21. T

Solar Production dropped by over half!

I assume it's the same as the inverter? Instructions are in the link above. Basically open up the door on the inverter to get the inverter's wifi password, reboot the inverter, connect to it's wifi, browse to 192.168.92.1, then you can see startup and production info.

Did service guys mess up my powerwalls? How to verify?

Look at the green status light on each PW, solid and pulsating to see that they get fully charged and are all discharging.
  23. T

Solar Production dropped by over half!

Do you have the Tesla inverter? If so, log in to it and see what the string readouts are at peak sunlight. Simplest explanation is you have a string of 8 panels and a string of 4 panels. Open the door on the inverter to verify. Your production in May of this year vs last year is down by 2/3...

NEM 1.0, Power Wall and SCE is it worth it?

NEM 1.0 $300/mo avg electric bill vs. NEM 3.0 $306/mo x 25 years (that's $92,000) + monthly NBC costs? Invest in index fund, charge the car during off-peak hours, and turn up the thermostat.

Adding a powerwall - have questions

Also if there's still sunlight outside after 4pm, solar will send 100% of its production to the grid so you get credit at the $0.50/kwh rate while the PW discharges to your house.
  26. T

Adding a powerwall - have questions

Yes you need a Gateway. Arbitrage is when you charge the PW with solar when electric rates are cheap, then use the PW to power your house when rates are high. For example, between 8am-11am, electric rate is $0.20/kwh so your solar production is sent to charge the PW and then send power to the...

Powerwall stuck to Standby pre-PTO? Remotely done?

In the screen prior to that where you log in, select installer option from the drop box rather than customer. If you wanted to DIY fix it yourself, you'd probably need open the Gateway box also and see if the software is configured correctly to the way the CTs are physically connected, and also...

    Ordered 2 Tesla Powerwalls today

If they really need to sell these Powerwalls and save the planet, they really need to ship them directly to the house and make installation cheap. So, does it bother anyone else ...

I have Lutron Caseta and Maestro dimmers with Feit decorative LED chandelier bulbs from Home Depot in various places throughout the house. They dim will and no buzzing. Also they come in 3000K color temp, it's a good balance between too red/yellow of 2700K and too blue of 5000K. Used to have...

Has anyone cut ties with your utility in California?

It's pretty impossible without having a giant array and dozen batteries. During May gray's three weeks of no sun at all, solar only made enough to recharge the batteries and avoid peak rates, but otherwise the grid was necessary to meet daily needs.
  36. T

So, does it bother anyone else ...

One benefit of solar+powerwall is not having to adjust your lifestyle or daily habits.

8.16 kW DC Solar Panels but never generating more 6.5kW

Unless microinverters have really bad efficiency, you're about 10% off of peak and power production compared to me. Maybe 2-3 panels aren't working. edit: Oh SolarEdge optimizers, not microinverter. Perhaps one of them is bad.
  38. T

8.16 kW DC Solar Panels but never generating more 6.5kW

Contrary to what others have said above, on a fully sunny day with warm temps and clear skies, it's easy to get close to the limit of the inverter as your setup looks similar to mine except I have the Tesla inverter. Also, my contract estmates 13,300kwh annual production. Seems like your...

Very low production 7.6 system with powerwall +- is inverter configured right?

Same exact thing happened to me. Tesla wouldn't bother to look at my half producing system until after PTO, then it took months to get an diagnostic tech to visit after PTO, then even more time to get a crew out to connect a cable on the roof that they forgot to connect.

CA utility companies already won with NEM3.0, though it didn't include fixed monthly grid access charge. Now they want their fixed monthly charge. And they'll base it on income to appear progressive and appeal to the public with decepitve marketing and PR. Then the lower kwh charges will...

Powerwalls now available for direct order

Looks promising to me. I already have Tesla solar, inverter, GW2, and 2 PW. Presumably I can just get a 3rd PW, hang it on the wall, run a pair of AC wires and control wires to the GW2, plug them into a new circuit breaker in the GW2 and data port, and be done. And collect 30% tax credit on top.

New solar and Powerwall install, low production?

Approaching second year after installation and first day of the year with 50kWh production, clear skies after the torrential storms. My last positive electric bill was March 2021. With true-up and yearly energy rebate/credit, I haven't paid anything for last 11 months.

    CPUC NEM 3.0 discussion

GE used to make a line of LED flood lights as direct replacements for GX 4-pin fluorescent lights. They work well enough, but have very dim flickering after turning off for a few minutes as the ballast denergizes. Philips has a product too, but the bulbs aren't flood light shaped, but they...
