    Hands Free Open Trunk

I use the Tessie app and tell Siri on my watch to open the trunk. Among other things. Does that count as hands free?

    Sorry I didn't see you...

Drunk? High? Distracted? A Russian? All four? I just don't understand how someone can just drive into another car like that?

Time to disable bluetooth as a key?

Pro tip. If the other guy is at fault don't even get your insurance involved. Make a claim with the other guys insurance. It's what I did.

    Long time lurker, 1st Accident

The cops may not want to be involved. If no-one was injured they may just tell you to file a report. Unless you live in a small town where cops have nothing better to do.

Range Loss Over Time, What Can Be Expected, Efficiency, How to Maintain Battery Health

Are you charging it past 80% for daily use? A daily charge to 100% should be avoided unless you are immediately heading out on a road trip. In a perfect world you should keep the SOC between 40% and 70% with that battery. We don't live in a perfect world but, between having a home level II...

    Let's see those gas guzzlers!!!

Show off! What I'd give for that Audi. Here's the best I can do. The wife's car. With a normally aspirated V-6. The end of an era. Everything is dinky I-4s with a lot of boost.

    reliability

That has been a fact for a while now. Not sure when it happened but if I recall correctly it started about six months ago. If I keep my eyes on the road I get a LOT fewer nags about twitching the steering wheel.

Installer recommends an electric garage heater. Is it necessary? I’m in the Chicago land area

Sounds like you've just stumbled on a perpetual motion machine! A heat pump does not generate heat. It just moves it around.
  11. rpiotro

Range loss from wider not taller wheels/tires?

In a word, yes. A wider tire presents a larger cross section. More air resistance. How much it affects range is up for debate.

    Long time lurker, 1st Accident

I would think twice about reporting it to your insurance company. First of all, as you rear ended the other car you are liable. First get estimate of repairs. Depending on the cost you might prefer to just eat it instead of making a claim. Remember, any claims made on your insurance will show...

    Tyre rotation

Those jack pads are pretty cheap. I keep a set in my car just in case. The sensors are not a problem. Like in many newer cars they automagically just work. Maybe consider a different garage?

AC charging issues, always limit 16A

Ah. Searching for that elusive "what was the answer". A lot of people just don't seem to care about sharing.

    FSD on older Model3s

Have you tried it? If not, definitely subscribe for a month before you pull the trigger. But I guess I could assume that you got the free trial. Me personally, I'm not interested if it was free. Just one man's opinion. Of course, YMMV I would definitely consider the Advanced Auto Pilot if the...

How fair? Would you care to share?
  21. rpiotro

    My 2023 Model 3 got totaled :(

That looks pretty similar to my car. Just a tiny bit worse. By the time all was done including repairs, rental and diminished value it came to a $20,000 claim. I think that if the insurance company of the striking driver had known that it would grow to that number they may have totaled it also...

    Insurance question--need advice

If you make a claim on your insurance it will show up on CarFux. Probably as totaled. Yeah, I'm bitter. Ask me why. You need to weight the consequences versus your out of pocket costs to just pay for the repair.

The quest for the ultimate efficiency.

It is called a release agent. To more easily remove the tire from the mold during manufacturing. Slippery stuff, of course. Every shop that has put new tires on a motorcycle has warned me. "Do not drive on a wet road for the first 500 miles."

The quest for the ultimate efficiency.

Ha, ha. You are a funny guy. Police around here don't pull people over for anything less than a stolen plate. A Kia with a broken out window driven by a 13 year old. A bunch of kids hanging out the windows waving guns. Or maybe going 70 in a 25 MPH zone. I could go on all day about more minor...

    Just delivered Model3 and defects

You are worried about a minor paint defect inside the trunk? Just enjoy the drive. Maybe have a service center look at those other items. Remember, it is not a Rolls Royce. Or even a Mercedes. Me? I'd forget about it. Life's too short.

    40K Check-up?

No, and pretty much nothing. Buy a tire depth gauge to determine if you need a tire rotation. Replace the cabin air filter every two years. Check the brake fluid quality every four years. And possibly have the calipers cleaned and lubed if you have driven through a lot of salt. That should do...

I've never received any notice about getting the car serviced

Hey! Thanks for joining the club! I've been preaching a simple mantra for a long time now. Buy a tire depth gauge! It will tell you if you need a tire rotation or alignment. Is the wear even? Does it go down the road straight? Don't do those services based on an arbitrary number. For example...

When FSD for 2024 Model 3?

Yup. I had some experience with it three years ago when I borrowed my son's Y to go on a five day vacation. That was when the subscription service just started. I paid for a month to try it out. After spending come time with it my opinion has not changed. It is awesome on the interstates but...

Car broken into, mobile charger and the cable that connects me to other non-tesla chargers stolen. What are my options?

I've probably said it a hundred times. It is pretty hard to go wrong with OEM parts and equipment.
  35. rpiotro

psi reading on my tires is not accurate, car says they are 37-38 psi, I connected my compressor to it and it says 33.5 psi

Then why do it? Many people find it quite annoying. Only a few will speak out. You know, you are the only one. What is your purpose then?
  36. rpiotro

I have a 2022 model 3 dual motor. At 8k I had tires rotated. Yesterday took car in to have tires rotated again at 17k do I need to have an alignment?

Buy a tread depth gauge. They're cheap. It will not only tell you if you need an alignment but if you are wasting time and money with needless tire rotations.

    Wet roads

Speaking of driving in heavy rain. I just went through a very heavy unexpected rain on a short road trip. Had to slow to 55 MPH as the visibility was poor. At least an inch or more of standing water on the road. Had a huge effect on rolling resistance. Initially it was projected to arrive home...

Do Not Buy “HEPA” Cabin Air Filters for Model 3

This! I replaced mine for the first time at two years but only had about 13,000 miles, I was shocked at how dirty they were. The road ranger that came out and replaced them suggested every year. At only $58 parts and labor I'll gladly do it.
  40. rpiotro

Yet another “vehicle won’t sleep” thread

Just replace it. The battery is relatively cheap. I have found that most modern autos with a heavy reliance on electronics require a very robust electrical system. Even a load test may not reveal deficiencies. What's the worst that can happen? You'll have four more years of not worrying about...

What makes a car "fun to drive"?

Almost everything is a unibody these days. That has zip to do with the suspension. I guess your point went over my head.

What makes a car "fun to drive"?

I'm quite sure that they are noisy on a bumpy road. I owned two different Honda accords. Both of a vintage that still had unequal length wishbones front and rear. I would say they maybe didn't have the cornering Gs of other cars but they had the most precise steering of any cars I've owned. And...

Diminished Value Model 3 2023 Standard

At $24,000 estimate they should probably total it. Have they started work on it yet? They will almost certainly find more "hidden damage". Mine went from an initial estimate of $6,500 to $13,000 once they got into it. I got $5,000 in diminished value. My full story; Finally happened [collision]

    Out-of-round winter tire package?

Why I only buy Michelin or Conti. Better chance of round tires. But yes, first have the balance checked. Preferably on a Road Force machine. That will also tell you if they are out of round.

Model 3 hub caps stolen *ugh*

Sure. File an insurance claim. Then your car will show up on CarFax as totaled. I'd be surprised if the cost would exceed your deductible. Not a smart way to go.

What makes a car "fun to drive"?

Fun to drive Mach E? I drove a pre-release version in February of 2021. Spent the afternoon with it. Nice car but it rides like a truck. Because it is a truck. And then there is that crappy and noisy MacPherson strut front suspension. Like you would get on a Hyundai Elantra. If you were coming...

    wipers stopped working on auto

The current software, 2024.2.7 really took a step backwards for me. It used to work pretty well. Two other cars we've owned, A 2012 Mercedes SLK and a 2014 Infiniti Q50 both had auto wipers. While not perfect they worked quite well. Very satisfactorily. Now, my 2021 SR+ will wipe when there is...

What makes a car "fun to drive"?

I have a 2021 SR+. It is possibly the lightest Tesla made. Or at least close. At 3616 lbs. it is lighter than either of my previous sport sedans by ~400 lbs. My son has a 2021 model Y. He drove my car and said "Wow, what a difference". I have been driving for 58 years. Have owned a few nice...
