2024 Model 3 Performance Announced - Discussion thread post announcement

Yep, the S does outperform the 3 in corners, as well as pretty much any other metric you can think of. I've tracked my Plaid, and even on a very tight course it is an absolute monster. Yes, the steering could be quicker and firmer with a more direct feel, but the adjustable suspension, track...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

It comes down to efficiency and range vs grip. Sure, you can spend all day obsessing about wheels and wheel covers and tire sizes and compounds, but at the end of the day, do you want an energy efficient pooch on some 500-600 treadwear tires, or do you want a performance car with proper tires...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The 235's on the previous generation did not slow it down a bit, the thing dead-hooks even in the wet in a straight line. Even with $89 Westlake tires with a 500 treadwear rating they dead-hook, traction just isn't a factor for acceleration. My Plaid is about 5,100 pounds with me in it, has...

    Future classic?

The only one that has a chance of being somewhat desirable is a Plaid(S or X I guess), but we're talking 20+ years in the future, and it will be surpassed several times over by then. So.......none will be desirable classics. I think it's more likely they'll be bought cheap, gutted, cut, stripped...

2024 Model 3 Performance Announced - Discussion thread post announcement

Who is paying attention to EPA range in an M3P? Drive it like you stole it, get 200 miles of range, and charge it back up. My Plaid is advertised at 395, shows 372, and gets about 200 with me beating on it, with somewhat close-to-advertised cruising down the freeway, None of my gas cars ever got...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

    If it can run a 10.99 @ 120 bone stock I will be impressed. Mid-low 10's and/or a 122+ trap are crack-smoking territory.
  7. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I beat on my M3P like a rental car every day for a year, and I do the same with my Plaid. Tires are a necessary expense, and to many, a car is boring if all it does is potentially turn in slightly faster than a model with nearly twice the power and AWD. I would argue that always having the power...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I'm down for a hot hatch with 600+ horsepower, AWD, and all the goodies to make it an absolute gut-punch weapon in the straights and the turns. Something like a WRC car, but with massive grip.
  9. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Same as the old car's top end, just bumped up a bit. Nothing about the drivetrain has fundamentally changed, just a slightly "better" rear motor of the same design. A Hellcat will absolutely destroy an M3P from any 60+ roll.
  10. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I launched my 3 and Plaid right in front of the Tesla dealer and have beat on them every day ever since.

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Looking at the Draggy chart, it appears the car dead-hooked and did the run nice and smooth without any tire spin. I compared it to some of my 0-60 graphs and looked closely at the last 1/2 of the pull. It lines up perfectly with my run, meaning the power output is more or less the same, it...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Did you just tag an admin because you don't like hearing about others' real-world experience? Here's mine. I had a 2023 M3P for 2 days shy of a year. Falls on its face after 50 Mph. The new one, even with a 10%, hell, a 20% increase in power is still going to feel just like the old car, slightly...

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

I had to turn off pedestrian/object detection, had that happen a couple times in the left lane. My best time there last month was a 6.39, creeping up into the 6.5X range. Most passes I was spinning for a good 150-200 feet, it's a very slick surface. I may go back this Saturday and try running...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I'll take the actual specs(motor, battery, etc...) over the subjective opinions of a few journalists/bloggers who drove an M3P once for a few hours back in 2018.

The 2021 and later Long Range traps 130. Draggy is just as valid as as a drag strip. If the slope is outside 1% the results are invalid.

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

What suspension setting did you have it in? My Plaid is leagues quieter in terms of wind and road noise compared to the 3, and the ride(in the correct setting) is outstanding.
  18. I

Plaid S or Highland Model 3 Performance

I drove a 2023 Performance for a year before trading it in on a Plaid. The changes certainly are nice(minus the wheels IMO, would go aftermarket 18's anyways), but it's essentially the same old drivetrain with a ~10% power bump, some better seats, and some compression/rebound dampening...

Plaid S or Highland Model 3 Performance

quieter - It better be, the previous model sounded like it had door seals from a 1989 Hyundai better ride - Ride was trash to begin with looks better - I actually think it looks worse wheels are bad ass and forged/staggered - Wheels look foul, and even worse when you take off the aero covers...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I would hope you'd be able to outhandle a Plaid on a 35-40 second course. That said, my completely stock Plaid had fastest time of the day out of a 25 car field over 20 sprint laps. It is what it is.
  21. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

.05 in the 60' is worth about one tenth. I swapped to lightweight 18's on mine and the difference in 1/4 mile times was less than a tenth. heating the battery makes the biggest difference. I guess we'll have to wait and see what the new one does. If it's a full half second quicker and runs...
  22. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The weight is there for sure, but the Plaid has much better suspension than the 3 and actually has more lateral grip. Even on a very tight track, the Plaid is a blast to drive. And once the session is over, you throw it in comfort mode and cruise on home.
  23. I

Plaid S or Highland Model 3 Performance

Tarted up rental car is exactly how I felt about my M3P. The Plaid makes the 3 feel like a tin can. Brakes are fantastic, although I think that initially people are somewhat turned off by the feel. The work great on the street and the track(drag and road course), but will get hot after some...
  24. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Seriously, these guys are going to give themselves an aneurysm hoping and praying that a .2 reduction in 0-60 is somehow going to translate into dropping a second off and adding 10 Mph to the quarter mile. Even if it did run mid-10's at 125, which is fantastic(and probably the performance...
  25. I

Plaid S or Highland Model 3 Performance

I dumped my 2023 M3P for a Plaid. The 2024 is simply warmed over a touch and for all intents and purposes is the same car. I have 0 intentions of ever going back.

Help me decide Model 3P or Model YP

The Y looks like an ugly jelly bean, while the 3 is much less offensively shaped.
  27. I

    Chill Mode usage

My M3P was set to standard for the year I had it. I put it in chill once and just laughed. OE tires lasted 8,600 miles, and the replacement set was about halfway gone after another 8,000. Traded it in at 17k for a Plaid. The OE tires on that thing are about half gone after 4K, and that includes...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I hope the above is true, but I find it very telling that tesla made a supposedly badass car and decided to ignore every acceleration metric except a moderate decrease in 0-60. If it was a 10.7 @ 125 car, I would think they'd capitalize on it.
  29. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

This right here is easily worth .2 to 60, which tells me that there really isn't improved power through 60 Mph, its simply a stronger initial hit. The OG Performance was SOFT from a stop. So, it appears that Tesla has quickened the initial power ramp to get a marginally better 0-60, and after...

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

I went to a no-prep 1/8th mile event on the worst strip of asphalt I've ever driven on. Car runs 6.1-6.20 on the street, but here it was spinning up to 70 Mph and running 6.60. Tire slip absolutely can be felt, but the TC system is by far the smoothest I have experienced. If you don't think...
  31. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Applying more power at the rear during an understeer condition will only serve to take weight off the front end AND try to accelerate the vehicle, which will result in severe understeer. Natural understeer is certainly considered safer than oversteer for most drivers, but it does not have any...

Is the Model S worth it over the Highland M3?

From someone who daily drove a 2023 M3P for a year and ditched it for a 2021 Plaid...... The 3 is what it is in terms of suspension(partially addressed by the Highland), handling, ride comfort, etc... I liken it to a Civic, it just does what it does, and fundamentally it always feels like the...
  33. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

That was fixed with a SW update, and my car is smooth as silk. Compared to my M3P, the Plaid rides like a Rolls Royce.
  34. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Get the Plaid and swap the factory wheel for a Hansshow wheel. The yoke is a worthless piece of *sugar*.
  35. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

It's extremely easy when the car will already dead hook. Throw a bit quicker torque ramp in there and you're done. The only thing different about the new car powertrain-wise is the larger inverter on the same old rear motor. It's going to throw more power at it while possible, and the then motor...

"Highland Performance Plaid Speculation", all 216 pages of it. You should look up the definition of "misinformation", because this ain't it.
  37. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The Plaid has 3 new motors designed to produce a flat HP curve, while the "new" 3 has the same old stuff warmed-over just a touch. The fundamental power curve is still going to be the same. A "Ludicrous" upgrade, if there ever is such a thing, will simply make it quicker to 50/60/70 before...
  38. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Do you honestly believe it picked up a measly .2 to 60, but is magically going to pull like a train after that? Low 11's will be the norm, with a trap speed of 120ish.
  39. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

So, 2 tenths quicker to 60, still falls on its face after that, and Ludicrous mode likely just warms the battery to even get that number. I guess the race is on to get one into the 10's after switching wheels/tires and ripping out the interior. No thanks. Keep in mind, the old Performance made...

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

For a regular MS, I'd go to Pueblo and do some 1/4 mile, but it would probably be a great 1/8th car at PPIR since it will likely dead hook on that slippery asphalt. Plus, it's easy to find a safe 1/8th mile spot just about anywhere.
  41. I

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

I didn't even ask, I just went to PPIR instead. If I had to guess, it's because they know a stock Plaid will likely dominate in the "Street" class against all the highly modified ICE cars. I noticed the tires were required to have a 300 or greater treadwear rating, and exactly 0 RWD cars are...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The 3L will feel like a dog compared to the Plaid, and FWIW, you will absolutely get used to a Plaid after a fairly short time. Great used Plaids are $65K now, I really cant see a reason for a performance-oriented person to buy a 3L unless you want NEW and just hate the better car for some reason.
  44. I

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

Make sure you can run. I tried to go to the cash days thing this past weekend and they specifically banned Plaids in the rules. Check out the no-prep street drags or track sprints at PPIR this weekend, it's super laid-back and you can run 30 times if you like.
  45. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The old P's made 520/650 at the wheels on a dyno for reference. The figures then fall off a cliff after ~50 Mph.
  46. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The capacitive touch buttons work extremely well. If that's all that's stopping you from getting a Plaid, I hope you REALLY enjoy the tiny bump in performance the upcoming "L" or whatever will offer.

To Complete Steering Wheels, and Lateral Gs!

The yoke is gimmicky trash, I replaced mine within two weeks with a proper steering wheel.

No tax credit for purchase vs a $7,500 credit for a lease, at least some of which goes to lower your lease payments. Not everyone buys cars based on projected depreciation, otherwise we'd all be driving $800 shitboxes.
  49. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

He definitely hasn't. I drove my M3P for two days shy of a year and traded it in for a Plaid. All this speculation and argument about potential tenths and hundredths of a second is pretty laughable. It's going to run whatever it does to 60(let's say 2.9 seconds with or without rollout...
  50. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The controllers ramp in power from 0-40 MPh, definitely not traction limited. I could launch mine in the rain and it wouldn't spin. Tesla could certainly get the 60' down to the 1.6 range with the current hardware, but I honestly don't see one slightly different motor making much of a difference...
