Wiki Everything you wanted to know about Intelligent Octopus But Were Afraid To Ask

In planning load management for the EV charger, where should the current transformer be placed? My smart meter cables go to a junction box that sends one pair of wires to the distribution board in the house and the other pair to a mini distribution board (RCD and MCB) for the charger. I see...

Something to watch in service requests via app

Having learnt somewhere that older Model S vehicles with FSD were eligible for a free camera upgrade but suspecting it was USA only, I thought I would find out if it applied in the UK by submitting a service request. It went in on the app on 12 May and was quickly approved for a mobile visit on...

What’s the least I have to do to stop the IO app polling the car and waking it up while parked at the airport for a week? Options seem to be: In app, Accounts and Settings, Devices, Smart Charging button (says Disable IO from controlling your device). The device is the car, not the charger. On...

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

I have air-air heat pump units in two bedrooms, which they heat in no time, and plan to install three more in the other rooms in which we mainly live (replacing the outside unit with a larger one) so we burn less heating oil. The installer’s calculation of the heat output in kW required for the...

Wiki Everything you wanted to know about Intelligent Octopus But Were Afraid To Ask

Have just received Octopus email with options when Go (5p/13.8p) runs out Jan 14. Can I sign up with IO now, to start on Jan 15, or should I wait until a few days beforehand? Is the IO T&C document available – I can find the generic Octopus T&C online but not one specific to IO. Thanks.

2 EV Household - what else you got?

Mine is Model S 75D, hers is BMW i3, both since 2017. Agree about i3 looks - but there's little between one's feet and the vehicle in front. I would not want to hit anything in it.

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

Completely agree about air-air HP. We installed a split system with wall units in main bedroom (2.5kW) and spare room (4.2kW – room is larger and always cold), initially with cooling in mind. They are great on the very few days when it’s uncomfortably hot at night, but are used mostly for...

    All Electric - All in...

7912kWh in 2021 in 4-bedroom detached house. Oil boiler for heating (no gas in the village), hot water from immersion heater (mainly at Octopus 5p at night), electricity for everything else. Occasional brief use of air-air HP in main bedroom. Regular hob, not induction. Two EVs, combined annual...

Why I’m not keen on "Super-Fast" Super chargers

My 2017 S 75D thinks I like to linger over lunch. kW + SOC (e.g. 80kW at 30% SOC) is never greater than 110.

30 hour wait for recovery. Lessons learnt.

That's how I park at home, and fortunately was parked that way when Model S had to be towed out onto the road and onto the truck after electrical death owing to "Upon investigation found the 12V support to BMS to be at fault due to a lack of tension on wiring terminal" April 2019. I think that...

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

Agree it’s physics and not conspiracy theory, but arguably the physics could have been better had the regulators required from the network operators a different balance between shareholder dividends and investment in infrastructure.

Solar Panels UK - is it worth it?

I assume that the DNO response to my prospective installer’s application for 18 panels and a Powerwall on a single phase supply “Reduce PV and Battery system to 7.36kW (32A) installed capacity but limit the export capacity to 3.68kW (16A)” reflects the local infrastructure in rural Oxfordshire...

    Bye bye fossils

Same also. BMW i3 (her) April 2017 and Model S (me) Nov 2017. Neither of us would ever go back to ICE. Just need to find a way to ditch the oil boiler for the central heating.

    Tesla Superchargers at Pubs/Hotels/Resturants

At Wyboston there is a golf course with clubhouse at the far end of the car park. We had coffee in the clubhouse on the way to Norfolk and coffee + sandwich on the way back, sitting on the veranda overlooking the lake.

    Model S - new order BTX8 - Should i worry?

My 75D purchased Nov 2017 has BTX8 but I don't feel it is a fast supercharger. If you add charge rate in kWh to % SOC (e.g. 70 kWh + 40% SOC), it seldom gets >110 and is usually between 100 and 110. Not sure how that would compare with 75D fitted with the more standard battery.

Major Problem (electrical failure, smell, smoke and shutdown) 2017 Model S

In April 2020 when MS was three years old, a loud electrical-type bang occurred when I put the car into drive, seemingly from behind, below and to the right of the instrument cluster (RHD vehicle). Then HVAC would blow only cold air but the car drove normally. The PTC heater had blown. SC...

    MS MCU upgrade or not?

Last month, the infotainment upgrade MCU1 to MCU2 was 1166.67, radio tuner upgrade was 391.67, both ex VAT, total inc VAT £1870. The 2019 Model 3 loaner was free, as was the AP2.0 to 3.0 upgrade (I already had FSD). Both screens were replaced. The MCU surround looks the same. It took a day...

New (to me) 2017 Model S 90D. Some questions

AFAIK the tow eye is supplied with the car. Was your car purchased from Tesla or elsewhere? If elsewhere, that's probably where the tow eye is. Mine was essential on the two (or was it four, I forget....) occasions that the car became undriveable and had to be towed onto a flat-bed truck for...

New (to me) 2017 Model S 90D. Some questions

In my 2017 75D, the tow hook is in the flat red zipped package along with the warning triangle and some first aid stuff. I went to the car just now to check this but also found half inch of standing water in a corner of the lower trunk compartment. Grrr! Yet another SC trip.

Thinking about solar cells and powerwall.

Does anyone have experience/expertise/advice on suboptimal roof orientations? I have a 50 m2 tiled roof orientated NE with slope 15 degrees (at this orientation better than 40 degrees, at least in summer). My objective would be to make some electricity, not ROI. Is it a non-starter? PVGIS...

What's the longest your Tesla has been in with the SC?

Six weeks at MK SC with AC fault in May 2018. The two-hour replacement of the EXV coil was started and completed on day 42 and I picked up the car in the afternoon. It had taken about a week for the part to arrive. Although the SC and the escalation team in Holland would not give much away...

    Service Estimate pitfall

Just 'cos it's listed on the service estimate does not mean it will happen. My upgrade MCU1 to MCU2 with tuner and 2.0 to HW3.0 for MS (I have FSD) was scheduled for late November but changed because of lockdown to Dec 3. Over the phone to the SC a couple of days beforehand, it was difficult...

    London congestion charge exemption renewal

In response to an email reminder from TFL, I renewed just now (just in case needed in the next year). But it says CC should be paid. Is that correct? TFL changed the rules in June in response to Covid but I can't see anything in the TFL web pages to say that battery EVs now have to pay.

I did not think of looking. In S75D MCU1 AP2.0, not sure it would be available. Insurers Direct Line have been first rate so far. They agreed my choice of Tesla-approved bodyshop although it was not on their list and the car was there within 24 hours of calling them. Under the policy, a...
