Tesla has already sent hundreds of Powerwalls to Puerto Rico to help restore electricity in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Today, CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter the company would be glad to scale the system to power the whole island if the government wanted to pursue that option.
Tesla has already used a combination of its solar panels and Powerpack batteries to power a couple of small islands and could do the same for Puerto Rico. Musk said there is “no scalability limit.”
The Tesla team has done this for many smaller islands around the world, but there is no scalability limit, so it can be done for Puerto Rico too. Such a decision would be in the hands of the PR govt, PUC, any commercial stakeholders and, most importantly, the people of PR.

Tesla installed a microgrid consisting of 5,328 solar panels and 60 Powerpack batteries to power the island of Ta’u in American Samoa. Tesla also built a solar farm on the Hawaiian island of Kauai that can account for 20% of the island’s peak electricity load.
