Tesla Opens Model 3 Configurator to Non-Employees

Non-employee Model 3 reservation holders started receiving invites Tuesday to configure their cars. Several TMC members confirmed receiving the email.

Those lucky enough to receive the note from Tesla were also delighted to learn that delivery is estimated to take place in four weeks. The online configurator appears to be the same as the version previously released to employees.

Reservation holders can choose from a first production Model 3 with long range capabilities and premium features, or wait for a $35,000 base model that is expected to go into production in 2018. Dual motor all-wheel drive cars won’t be available until Spring 2018.

Tesla’s production of the Model 3 has been impacted by manufacturing troubles. The company pushed a goal to produce 5,000 vehicles per week in December to the end of the first quarter of 2018. CEO Elon Musk outlined problems with battery module production and said a reconfigured system will be capable of production rates significantly greater than the original specification.
