Tesla to Increase Production of Residential Energy Products

Tesla will increase efforts from its Tesla Energy division that produces products like the Powerwall and Solar Roof, according to USA Today.

“It’s like with Model 3,” Tesla Chief Technology Officer JB Straubel told the paper of demand for the solar products. “People have come flooding in and are waiting on the product. So now we’re aggressively ramping our capacity.”

Straubel did not offer any specifics about reservations for the solar products, but said Tesla is struggling to keep up with deposits. Straubel said production of the Powerwall 2 is set to increase later this year, while Solar Roof tile production will ramp up in 2019. Tesla began installing the Solar Roof for residential customers earlier this year.

Tesla’s residential energy unit has taken a hit as part of the company’s restructuring. More than a dozen Tesla solar facilities across nine states were shuttered and the company elected to not renew its partnership with Home Depot to sell Tesla Energy products.

Still, the products have proved capable and seem to have great demand. Now that Tesla may be exiting the brunt of its Model 3 manufacturing woes, it sounds like it may be able to give more attention to Tesla Energy efforts.
