SpaceX Set to Send 60 Starlink Satellites Into Orbit

SpaceX is scheduled to send 60 Starlink satellites into orbit tonight.

A successful mission will bring the count of Starlink satellites deployed to date to 180. SpaceX has permission from the FCC for 12,000 satellites to join the constellation. The company hopes to launch half of them by 2024.

The satellites will be used for SpaceX’s planned broadband network. SpaceX says 1,440 satellites will need to be in orbit to provide Internet service to the world’s population, which could be achieved in 24 launches.

Tonight’s launch will leverage a Falcon 9 rocket flying for a fourth time. This is the second Falcon 9 to achieve four launches. SpaceX will also attempt to land the rocket on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

The mission is scheduled to launch at 9:19 p.m. ET from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Check out the livestream above.
