No Garage / No driveway.... Charging?

This is one of the elephants in the room with EV adoption. Here in the UK public charging is more than 10 times as expensive as private charging. I noticed someone around the corner from me charging an EV with a cable running across the pavement (sidewalk in the US) covered by a cable protector...

PCN from Heston westbound supercharger exit closure around midnight 5th Jan

Hi all, Did anyone else get stung by a PCN due to the total closure of the exit road from Heston Westbound services and Tesla Supercharger on 5th Jan around 00:20 am? We were forced to use the camera controlled back exit so were served with a PCN. The only alternative would have been an...

Scheduled software update postpones scheduled charge time

Had some unexpected scheduling behaviour. Anyone else seen this? Posting here in case it helps someone else in future. Scheduled a software update at the end of scheduled charging last night. The software update started and completed at the scheduled time but no charging happened at all. The...

Are there any UK 3-pin granny chargers that include a built in timer?

Yeah, they're good, I've got similar plugs elsewhere in the house. Do they manage 10A for hours without getting warm at all? They're probably not designed for heavy duty loads over long periods. The main drawback for me is that it would be too bulky and prevent the exterior socket cover closing.

Are there any UK 3-pin granny chargers that include a built in timer?

Thanks, that's a pretty neat solution. Does that fit entirely into a UK consumer unit as a replacement for the normal circuit breaker MCB thing? Is it a fairly straight forward installation?

Are there any UK 3-pin granny chargers that include a built in timer?

That's a good point. I'll check that out.

Are there any UK 3-pin granny chargers that include a built in timer?

Ideally I'd like to find a 3-pin charger for our second EV that has a built-in timer so that we can restrict charging to off-peak hours. Does such a thing exist? If we convert the socket to a 16A 'commando' socket, are there any chargers that include a timer? If not perhaps we're better off...

2022.24.6 and Spotify on standard connectivity in the UK

Not sure if related but today my Spotify on premium stopped working. Had to do choose vehicle account again and accept new terms and conditions then it worked again.

2022.24.6 and Spotify on standard connectivity in the UK

Entitled? That's putting it a bit strongly. Quite a few features are included without extra charge in the large up front purchase price of the car. Some obvious examples: standard connectivity and Google map data. I very much feel 'entitled' to use them as they were used to promote the car to...

2022.24.6 and Spotify on standard connectivity in the UK

My use of car Spotify account with standard connectivity and hotspot seems blocked after updating to 2022.36.2. Pretty annoying downgrade. The premium connectivity page has a footnote saying 'features subject to change' so presumably Tesla feel covered to move any feature to premium...

Looks like they are removing stalks from the 3/Y

I adore my two model 3s but removal of stalks would mean I would not buy Tesla again. The current stalk operations are safety critical and need to be immediately accessible without groping around or hesitation whatever position the steering wheel is in. For example: roundabouts and three point...

    Pin to Drive

Disabling Allow Keyless Driving doesn't really add any security as anyone with a valid key seems to be able to turn back on Keyless Driving from inside the car anyway.

    Pin to Drive

I tested starting the car remotely from the app in our 2021 M3 SR+ the other day. From my testing starting the car remotely definitely *does* bypass pin to drive and seems to allow the car to be driven without entering a pin or time limit on driving once started. The remote start permission to...

    Pin to Drive

Does adding a new driver in the app allow the new driver to bypass pin to drive? Starting the car remotely in the app definitely does bypass pin to drive so I'm considering turning off remote start in the car option.

[UK] used value of their Tesla cars plummeting?

I read that most car dealers are not concerned and are expecting a *slow* return to more traditional residual values. However they're not the ones paying the depreciation of course unless they're stupid enough to hold stock for much too long. I expect that on average depreciation will be lower...

    Charge Port ECU failure

Had failed charge port ECU on UK 2021 M3 LR after 6 months. Replaced under warranty but required stay in service centre. Has been fine in 12 months since. Stopped charging with CCS or type 2 just after using Engie/Geniepoint CCS charge point. Could've been a coincidence but I suspect Geniepoint...

Octopus Intelligent - remove second Tesla from account

I'd really like to change but have two Teslas on one account. I've emailed Octopus asking if I can beta test Tesla accounts with more than one car... If you have the cars under different accounts then does that you can't access them both in the same phone app?

MOT - "Don't come here again"!

I've only once had a tyre servicing experience where the tyre pressures were correctly set afterwards. That was Manchester Recovery who did a roadside replacement of a puncture and educated me about Tesla jacking pads. I'm tempted to drive the Tesla over there next time I need tyre changing or...

MOT - "Don't come here again"!

I've always been suspicious that main dealers will go easy on their warranty cars in servicing and MOT and not report or investigate anything borderline as it makes their cars look bad and result in more warranty claims that affect their bottom line.

UK MoT test and Tesla cars

Sounds great, but sadly I'm in Huddersfield... My local garage says their staff will finish their EV training courses at the end of next month though they've "changed lots of Tesla tyres".

Wiki Your first UK Tesla MOT? Checklist before the visit.

Sounds like it's worth a try. I know Renault will repair worn out bearings under warranty so it sounds like a valid warranty claim but it probably depends very much on the degree of wear. Did you use any of the previous checklists and have anything to remove or add?

    US Model 3 to UK

How long do EV main battery packs last before failure (not just manageable degradation)?

My impression from reading various posts (though this is pure speculation) is that Tesla repair options for Model S batteries vary a lot depending on what batteries are currently available and the Tesla service centre policy. Perhaps that's not surprising since: * Model S is a relatively low...

    Cheaper Supercharger Alternatives?

The supercharger converts from power grid AC to DC going to the car. If they charged for amount of AC electricity used it would be more than the amount of DC supplied to the car due to conversion losses in the supercharger.

Recommendations for UK superchargers with best play facilities for children?

I forgot Exeter. Great playground with a large open grass area next to the chargers. Be careful to choose the faster chargers furthest from the main road. Farm shop was closed when I visited, not sure if that means no toilets outside shop hours. Some reviews say road queues can be bad at busy...

Recommendations for UK superchargers with best play facilities for children?

A stop with a chance to run around really helps with those long trips with children... I'll start with one good recommendation. Hopwood park Birmingham has nice playground for all ages and fenced seating area by small lake right next to the superchargers. Leicester Fosse park has climbing...

Model S ride quality vs Model 3

Only test drove a model S once. Ride quality was noticeably better immediately than our M3LR with aero 18" wheels but not in a completely different league. Handling not quite as sharp though. I find the M3 ride quality is particularly sensitive to any pressure imbalance between tyres. Worth...

Best Way to Get Rid of the Old Non Tesla Car

In my experience in Tesla trade in values are terrible from my single sample UK experience. Shop around if you don't mind the minor inconvenience. Tesla offered me 7.5k to trade in Nissan Qashqai, vs selling for 9.3k back to the Nissan dealer I bought it from without haggling. Probably Helped...

Another Model Y or go with a Model 3?

We have two 3s but only because the Y was not available when we first bought and Y was more than we wanted to spend for a low mileage second EV. If budget was unlimited would have probably gone for Y for the extra space. Test drive both, there seem to be strong opinions in both directions.
  32. N

Thinking of buying Model Y LR

Some posters strongly prefer the handling of the 3 to the Y so definitely important to test drive both before buying. Doesn't sound like you'll need the long range for 20-30 mile work commute if you have a home chargepoint which is worth installing. AWD is nice to have and long range can be...

Please disagree with my opinion! =)

Personally I love using auto steer on the highway because it frees up my brain to spend *more* time paying attention to the road not less. That means I can better work out which of the careless drivers around me are endangering me and everyone else because they're distracted by focusing on a...

Model 3 trunk beeping twice and stopping halfway?

Actually our boot problem is a double beep so presumably it's an intermittent mechanical problem with boot not opening easily enough and motor requesting excessive current.
  35. N

Model 3 trunk beeping twice and stopping halfway?

Just did an experiment. Couldn't reproduce the single beep problem but could easily reproduce the double beep behaviour by gently prevent boot from opening with a hand. So it seems like the double beep problem is a restricted boot opening or current overload in the boot opener and the single...
  36. N

Model 3 trunk beeping twice and stopping halfway?

Interesting. I thought it might be a software change to how the car detects an obstruction to opening the trunk with camera or ultrasonic sensors. Only happens with opening trunk using button not from app or control screen. Happens in both our 2021 M3s starting after the same software update...

Low mileage second EV, keep coming back to .... M3!

I purchased this car in the end. Very happy with how it drives. The fit and finish is a bit inferior to our Shanghai made M3 LR which is 4 months newer. The rear door handles are a bit recessed, the panel gaps less consistent, the frunk is harder work to close. SR+ is plenty fast enough for me...

    Umc defaulting to 16a

Forgot to ask, are you charging with normal domestic 13A 3 pin plug connected to UMC?
  39. N

Existing Rolec Wallpod:EV or New Tesla Gen 3

Could be a beefy cable because it supports 3 phase and high current. Single phase 16A cables are quite a lot less chunky.
  40. N

Existing Rolec Wallpod:EV or New Tesla Gen 3

I like that they made the breakers replaceable with standard components. Probably not so true of other charge points.
  41. N

Did Tesla stop including a UMC mobile connector with new cars at some point?

Thanks. Are you expecting to get a UMC included with your incoming MYLR in your signature?
  42. N

Did Tesla stop including a UMC mobile connector with new cars at some point?

I got a UMC mobile connector '3-pin granny charger' included with a March 2021 Model 3 LR. Only came with 3-pin cable, not commando plug or European adapters. Did Tesla stop including UMC as standard equipment in the UK at some point? I'm looking at a December 2020 car that doesn't include one...
  43. N

    Umc defaulting to 16a

That sounds wrong and potentially dangerous. Perhaps the UMC is misconfigured or confused and thinks it's connected to a 16A commando plug. There must be some mechanism where the UMC knows it's connected to different types of mains outlets.
  44. N

Existing Rolec Wallpod:EV or New Tesla Gen 3

The Tesla wall connector didn't seem to offer that much apart from integrating with the Tesla app and have a button to unlock the chargepoint. I got a Zappi v2 for my Tesla which has a great app for scheduling and viewing house and chargepoint energy usage and is future proof if we add a...

Low mileage second EV, keep coming back to .... M3!

Having a hatchback definitely makes access a lot easier. I guess they chose a sedan design because they were designing for the American market initially. Seems they changed their minds with the Model Y. There were a few inches of difference in trunk dimensions under the parcel shelf and a wider...

Low mileage second EV, keep coming back to .... M3!

I'm considering a UK pre-owned M3 S+ from December 2020. It seems like it's an early 2021 model year car with heat pump etc even though it's made in Fremont, not Shanghai. Is this is a bit of rarity? Any reason to think this car would be in any way inferior to a slightly later 2021 M3 SR+ made...

Low mileage second EV, keep coming back to .... M3!

Test drove the i3 years ago. Would probably not choose it for longer trips vs M3. Range seems quite limited even in the expensive longest range cars. I3 Didn't seem like a lot of interior space for family trips. Perhaps I'm just spoiled by the space available in a M3.
  48. N

Low mileage second EV, keep coming back to .... M3!

We have the VW id3 and id4 selling here in the UK. Quite pricey, especially for longer range versions and some lead time to order new. Id3 seems quite small inside after an M3. New M3s in the UK have leapt up in price. Now 46k for new SR and 55K for LR with best part of a year's lead time...
