I find it interesting how many technologies we think of as "contemporary" or "modern" today are decades, or in some cases more than a century old. I think a lot of it depends on the overall market and economic conditions of the time, as well as consumer preferences. If GM would have stayed on the gas (no pun intended. OK, maybe a little) with EV development after the EV1, who knows where things would be now with EV battery tech.
