The people generally aren't paid enough to care, and often not allowed by policy to override the computer. So if 'computer says no' then that's the end of it without escalation to managers, which rarely actually happens (if you ask to speak to a manager at a call centre it'll often just be the guy sat next to them playing 'manager' for the day).

Easier to do the legwork yourself.. in this case Tesla's details are on their documents and also well known.

My bank online payment form wants the Sort Code without any hyphens.

So instead of copy-paste which would be reliable I have to retype it ... with all the risk associated with a mistype

Much the same with credit card systems which want it typed in with no spaces ... or specifically with the spaces.

Beggars belief to me that people program that prescriptively. The systems we build are happy with "anything reasonable and unambiguous"

I was able to make a payment today through HSBC online banking using the account number and sort code provided by Tesla in the app. You shouldn't need the IBAN, this is just for international payments. Your payment should be going to the Tesla Motors Limited account which is with Citibank. My payment credited within about 10 mins, I received an automated confirmation email, and I see the reduced balanced needed to pay when I recheck the wire transfer details in the app.
