Just to be clear, the desiccant bag has nothing to do with the stinky sock smell.

So is the general consensus to avoid replacing the desiccant bag as long as your AC is working fine?

I have never heard of a service requirement like this. The AC refrigerant loop is sealed. The desiccant should only need to be changed...
