Supercharger - Upland, CA (under construction Jan 2024, 64 V3 stalls)

Paving is completed and most of the fencing has been taken down. No transformers on site. Let’s see how long SCE takes to deliver the two transformers needed.

I live in Claremont. This is great. Where are the vaults for the 2 transformers in the pictures ?
Large, need 8 MW each. Does that mean transformers don’t show above ground level ?

A favorable reason for this location is that there is a high voltage spur line that feeds a sub station just to the west on Pomona College campus and it supplies all Claremont College campuses. That HV line should have plenty of capacity for this SC installation.

The vaults are centered between each set of 8 cabinets. During construction it looked like they dug out for underground transformers.

Looks like they are pretty much complete on the DC bus wiring. Parking lot striping and transformers may be all needed.

Each v3 cabinet, supplying 4 charging posts, draws around 350kVA from the grid.
So the overall site should need something like 2 x 2800kVA.

They may end up getting two 4000amp 480V feeds from SCE, which would come from the 12kV distribution network.

The 66kV line feeding claremont colleges private substation is certainly a lot of capacity, but probably not something they would end up using.

Today Friday May 3 Edison tech was on site, said he was installing the meters. He said transformers would follow “soon”

I have witnessed a much smaller 2 MW SC installation years ago. It would be fun to see these larger transformers.

Iam so waiting on this site to open up - as Iam one of the first batch Model3 cars - that came with life time free power charging. I live nearby and i take train in the montclair metro station - which is a block away from this site. I drive by every day - and I take a peak at this. Iam disappointed, not much progress being made in last 2-3 weeks. Hope to see if it open soon. Anyone has any new date other than Feb 2024 that passed few months ago??

Since they fired the supercharging staff this site stalled. No transformers and they never painted the parking lot.
Transformer is not related to the Tesla team being let go. That is on the utility. There are sites that were/are under construction at the time of the fire that continue being built so it should be no different here. The parking lot painting could be waiting on the transformer installation for some reason. Or some other reason not related to the Tesla team being fired. This should be in the hands of subcontractors.

I agree, just very interesting that the push to complete has stalled. Striping is relatively easy

True but FWiW, the La Verne site also appears to have been abandoned.
Because there hasn't been activity for 2 weeks? Jeez, lets give it a rest on the "every under construction site is being abandoned" hyperbole. Sites under construction are being finished. There are delays that existed before the team was let go that will continue to be a problem. Transformers being the main one. The main job of the team was planning these sites. Once they were permitted and a contractor was hired, they moved on to PLANNING the next site. If these sites sit for 3 or more months with no movement then we can start to question but I don't see Tesla just walking away from all this INSTALLED equipment when it would only take minimal work with no planning and minimal cost to finish them.

I never said they abandoned. I said they have been affected. I work for one of the largest utilities here in California, I know about delays. It’s most likely a sheer coincidence that all further progress has stopped since the “layoffs”.

The LaVerne site is what worries me more. It's not like they were finished and just waiting for a transformer. All progress just suddenly stopped. They still need to pave and take down gates and what not. I don't think that whoever was contracted to do their work lost their contact at Tesla and are waiting indefinitely for a new one is out of the realm. of possibility.

The upland site is also weird, from what I've seen in the last 6 months or so I've been tracking this stuff they usually completely finish paving, including line markings, then wait indefinitely for a transformer. I think it's more likely that they're just waiting for a transformer but I don't think the same thing as what might have happened at La Verne is out of the realm of possibility.
