The Model 3 will reportedly have a 50 kWh battery pack for the “standard” version and a 75 kWh battery for the “long range” version. The news comes after a TMC Member discovered an Environmental Protection Agency document offering clues for what to expect.
A report from Electrek says Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed the specific battery details Monday during a conference call hosted by Goldman Sachs related to Tesla’s new bond issuance. Musk also reportedly expressed concerns regarding the potential for battery cell supply to create a bottleneck for Model 3 production. Tesla may even encourage customers to purchase the smaller battery pack option to optimize the cells it produces.
TMC Members have speculated on the details related to the car’s battery since relevant documents filed with the Environmental Protection Agency emerged that suggest the long range Model 3 battery pack has a total voltage of 350 volts and a capacity of 230Ah, which results in 80,500 Wh or 80.5 kWh. Tesla has been fairly secretive about the Model 3 battery packs and advised not to read too much into the EPA test data.
However, the EPA filing also contains interesting information related to the Model 3’s motor. The filing says Model 3 is using a 3 phase permanent magnet electric motor, a change from the induction motor in the Model S and Model X. While this is a departure from what Tesla has done in the past, it is more in line with what other EV manufacturers are doing.
