Most manufacturers in most industries buy the competition's products to get real metrics on them.
Apparently Ford has a project for a new SUV, not necessarily electric, but could be. This doesn't mean Ford is actually at the engineering stage though. It would most likely be a Lincoln nameplate, and most likely they bought other SUVs.
However, it could be something as simple as measuring the cabin. When you read "Best" in advertising, you can bet they checked all the competition by measuring themselves and not relying on published data.
