Class action for Model S drive unit failure?

After my third drive unit failure in less than 100,000 miles, I'm checking on a class-action against Tesla. This equates to a gas car blowing an entire engine every 33,000 miles. The Tesla shop will not provide the old DU even after a non-warranty repair, because they say "Tesla owns the old parts". I can never get a failed drive unit for an expert failure mode analysis, but having seen others who did this they report a consistent finding: Tesla mis-engineered the seals allowing coolant to leak into the DU over time, causing failure consistently, basically a guarantee. Failure in my case was sudden and catastrophic with no warning, while driving down a busy highway. This dangerous fault is also a major profit source for the repair centers which is something Elon Musk was absolutely adamant would not happen. He also touted his million-mile motor from the start. The DU failure is likely to happen beyond the warranty, bringing in $7000 to the repair center. If you had a gas vehicle that blew its engine every 33,000 miles, there would be a lawsuit. I'm wondering if a class action has already been filed or if there are enough people to start one?

Why do they call an OTA update a recall? (24V051000)

The newest OTA update is to fix the font of a dash light, a goddamned ****ing font and it's being called a recall‽

Is it a recall when my Pixel 6 got an OTA update to fix a security patch? No!

I just don't get why these ass clowns insist on calling everything a damn recall. A recall is when you have to take the car into the shop for a defect like we all did for the airbags.

January 30, 2024 NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V051000 Incorrect Font Size on Warning Lights/FMVSS 105 Warning lights with a smaller font size can make critical safety information on the instrument panel difficult to read, increasing the risk of a crash. Model 3 Highland Ultimate Accessory List

I have an M3P Highland on order with an EDD at the end of June. I've been watching Youtube videos and blog posts on what kind of accessories make sense to purchase. One issue I have is most of the accessories are produced by fly-by-night operations with randomly generated store names. Somehow, people recommending them always have affiliate links :) So I'm compiling a list of M3 Highland accessories that are actually good and free from any affiliate/referral/bias. I'll keep this first post updated as I get feedback in the section below. Absolutely no affiliate links/sponsorship. Prioritize quality over price.

2024 Shipping Movements

I thought I would start a new thread for 2024 on European bound ships carrying Teslas.
The first logical question is why on earth would anyone on a Tesla forum be interested in shipping?

The answer is because once you have ordered your revolutionary expensive new car you enter the Tesla blackout zone - a frustrating period of non-communication from Tesla when you have no idea of what is happening with your order. If you call them, they just say they 'are waiting for a match'. What does that mean? Tesla don't build Model 3/Ys to order - they build whatever they want and then match what has been ordered to what has been produced. This 'matching' usually happens around the time the car is loaded on to a ship. Aha! Shipping has suddenly become interesting!

All Model 3s for Europe are currently made in the Shanghai Gigafactory and are shipped to Zeebrugge in Belgium, Koper in Slovenia or Barcelona in Spain through the Suez Canal in a journey taking about 30 days At the time of writing the Suez Canal is being avoided by most carriers and are routing via the Cape of Good Hope adding about 10 days to the voyage from Shanghai. It also adds about $200-250 to the shipping cost of each vehicle. All Model 3s and Y's for the UK are currently shipped from Shanghai direct to Southampton. UPDATE From Jun 24 MY for the UK will be supplied from Berlin!
Normally Tesla fully charter ships to transport their cars but during 2022/3 they supplemented the charters by using available space on scheduled services too. In 2024 I think we may see a return to whole charters in an effort to keep costs down and keep control of itineraries.

If you are in Auz/NZ, shipments are from Shanghai.
If you are in Dubai, your Model 3 will be loaded on to a ship that heads to Jebel Ali. Currently there is about one shipment per quarter.
If you are in Israel, your Model 3 will be shipped to Ashdod from Shanghai and again currently there is one shipment per quarter. Model Y will come from Berlin but is harder to track. Currently there are no services to Israel.
If you are in Ireland your car is shipped to Dublin via Zeebrugge.

Model S/X are shipped from Baltimore to Zeebrugge.

I mentioned Q1 earlier- this is because Tesla work in quarters with Q1 running from Jan to Mar. The Tesla business model requires as many cars as possible produced in a quarter to be paid for (delivered) in that same quarter.
This means that in Q1 the last ship will leave for Europe no later than around 8 Feb in order to allow for a 36/37 day transit to Southampton/Zeebrugge and then a (hectic) delivery push in the last 10 days or so of March. (A couple of days later if shipping to Barcelona) It is logical then to expect to see a large number of export models for the UK/EU market to be clogging the Chinese production lines in January and early February. This explains the feast or famine nature of Tesla logistics. Elon has promised his staff that he will try to suppress the end of quarter wave. To an extent he has already succeeded in this - by moving all export production to China, the US domestic supply is now much more evenly spread throughout the quarter. Production in Berlin is currently interrupted by delays in components as a result of container ships avoiding Suez, however this should only be a short-term issue.

You may wonder why we in the UK should be interested in shipments to Zeebrugge, Koper and Barcelona? Often it may be difficult to determine whether a ship is heading to Southampton, Zeebrugge, Barcelona or Koper and so it's just as easy to track all the ships to Europe. Often the ship may call at Southampton and then head to Zeebrugge and so it makes sense keep track of everything heading to Europe anyway. It's useful for me if our European readers advise their expected delivery dates and when VINs are allocated as that can help identify where a ship is going.

There is an pretty good spreadsheet populated with the latest (and historical) confirmed shipping information from a variety of sources - Tesla Carriers. It may be more of interest to you later as you become more engrossed in this subject! Did I mention it can become addictive?

Anyway, I think we can expect to see about 13 boatloads to Europe in Q1.
That begs the next question - how big are the boats? The standard ocean going vehicle carrier is 200 metres long and 32 metres wide and can fit about 5000 - 5500 cars onboard. A Tesla is larger and significantly heavier than a standard car and so a maximum of about 4500 cars are in each shipment. There are larger vessels that can transport more and I will make a point of mentioning it if a larger vessel is being used.

Anyway the plan is to post details of the latest Tesla shipping news for 2024 to this thread.

I will keep and eye on Pier 80 San Francisco for Model S/X exports to Far East and Baltimore for S/X to Europe.

There are a number of ship trackers you can use to follow the ships and www.marinetraffic.com is one with perhaps the best free coverage but there are plenty of others. The ships transmit a signal which is picked up by shore based receivers (mostly hosted by amateurs) and forwarded to the website. The trouble is that the signal is a VHF signal meaning the receiver has to be within line-of-sight and once the ship goes over the horizon to the receiver that's it, unless you pay for satellite coverage which is not cheap. With the aid of satellite tracking I will provide a daily update on exactly where each 'Tesla' ship is and provide an estimated time of arrival to Zeebrugge and Southampton (the UK port of entry for Tesla). A talented reader of the thread @Frizzy, has created an excellent webpage where you can track 'Tesla' ships.
I'll also try and add some background info which you may find interesting.

Correctly identifying Tesla ships from Shanghai is not easy and quite often a 'suspect' ship turns out to be a false alarm. There are other sites that claim to track Tesla ships but actually just track every possible ship that departs Shanghai, which is not particularly helpful. I at least try and rule out the improbable ones based on my experience. It's also free! It helps enormously if when you 'chat' to Tesla about your order that you ask what ship your car is on or if they won't tell you the name, at least ask when it will arrive in Zeebrugge/Southampton. Please post your info to the thread or PM me!

You can help me and others by keeping any posts on this thread strictly to shipping related matters - questions about when to expect delivery, VINs and panel gaps have their own threads, which I have been known to visit and contribute to also.

Version 12 UI Update - Regen Indicator straight up sucks - How do we get it moved back?

Regular 2019 M3 LR here - I received the v12 UI update last night and the first thing I noticed is the regen indicator (aka power use/regen indicator visulaization) that was previously located as a horizontal line in the top center has been moved to a tiny ~2 pixel vertical bar that has no padding against the left most screen and it's literally impossible to see with sunglasses on.

There is no longer a visible metric for center line (no power use or draw) - on my screen it also renders without clear upper and lower boundaries so it practically worthless. After driving all day, it seems as stupid as the decision to remove turn stalks. Question for this audiance is if there is a means to move it back or enlarge it?

Upcoming Sites from Tesla.com/permits/construction/awaiting commission

The tables below list sites under construction and proposed sites with markers on Tesla's map, sorted by Tesla's Target Opening date. Historically, marker information has been approximate in terms of both location and timing and many markers end up being removed. Tesla periodically update target site information; the most recent major updates were in February 2023 and March 2024 (follow links for a summary of the changes).

Additional sites not on Tesla's list are also included: if construction has started they are listed in the first table below, other sites (typically where planning requests have been submitted) are listed separately at the end.

Tesla have a separate list of proposed Service Centres on their website (Tesla Service Centers [sic] in United Kingdom), many of which end up with Superchargers. These are included as additional sites if they are not captured by Tesla's proposed Supercharger list but there is evidence (planning or construction) of Superchargers being installed.

Replacement HV Battery Warranty

I own a 2021 Model 3 Performance and just received the HV battery error code of death ("Unable to charge - Maximum charge level reached") with 60K miles on the odometer. I can no longer charge using a Level 1, Level 2, or Tesla Supercharger. Fortunately, I have about 75% left on the current charge so I have enough to drive to the SC which is about 20 miles away. Unfortunately, my service appointment is a week and a half out and I will have to get a rental so I can drive to work (80 daily round trip). After doing some Google research, I came across the Tesla Parts, Body, and Paint Repair Limited Warranty and noticed the refurbished HV battery will only have a 4 year, 50K warranty. Since my car is already 3 years old the limited warranty is similar in mileage to my original HV battery warranty. Buying a used Tesla with a replacement HV battery is now a show stopper for me. People who have their HV battery replaced within the first year or two will lose quite a bit of warranty time/mileage in the refurbished unit causing an expected loss of value should they sell the car.

Tesla Parts, Body, Paint Repair Limited Warranty.jpg

Driver's seat stuck at rearmost position... Tesla SC wants $2,650 parts + $539 labor to replace entire seat base

My awesome 2015 Model S P85DL's driver’s seat base won’t move forward (stuck at rear position) making driving difficult for me to reach pedals (I’m 6’-3”). All other seat movements work fine: base will tilt & raise AND seat back reclines.

Rebooting my car using the steering wheel buttons and installing latest v12 (2024.14.8) software didn’t resolve issue.

Tesla Service Center diagnosed and said my ENTIRE Driver's Seat Base Assembly needs to be replaced with a:

US_LEFT HAND DRIVE-FRONT SEAT CUSHION-NEXT GEN-TAN-MEMORY-SEALED HARNESS (1056258-03-B)

$2,650.00 Parts
564.00 Labor

Obviously the CO$T is shocking... and I'm skeptical:
  • I need to buy the entire $2,650 Seat Base instead of just replacing just a broken gear or motor
  • the new tan NextGen seat bottom will match my 9-year old / 83,000 mile tan front AND rear NextGen seats
Questions:
  1. Where else in SoCal could I take my 2015 Model S to get a "2nd opinion" ?
  2. If Tesla installs the new tan seat base and it looks mismatched can my existing tan NextGen leather seat base COVER be removed from my existing base and installed on a new one ? Tesla SC said their technician didn't mow if it could be done... and wouldn't do it since its not in "their procedures"
Thanks!

Wiki Everything you wanted to know about Intelligent Octopus But Were Afraid To Ask

Why write this post?
A lot of people are starting to get interested in IO. I don't think Octopus do a very good job of spelling out the benefits in their website. They have some FAQs, but the same questions keep coming up over and over on the forums.

What is it?
In a nutshell, IO is a split tariff that gives you a cheap off-peak rate for charging your EV and other electrical items in the household, including home batteries.

Isn’t that the same as Octopus Go or Go Faster?
The principle is the same, but in exchange for some benefits which we’ll explain, you allow Octopus to control the timing of your EV charge, so they can choose low carbon intensity and/or cheap wholesale priced time slots.

So I’m not in control of my charge? I don’t like the sound of that!
Well yes…and no. You’re in control of how much to charge and when you want the car to be ready, just like you would be normally. Within those parameters, you’re allowing Octopus to control which half-hour slots the car chooses to get to that target % charge. And you can always override IO if you want to “bump charge” through the day.

OK, but what are the benefits you mentioned for this trade off?
First of all, you get a larger guaranteed off-peak window for using household appliances and charging home batteries, etc. It’s six hours between 23:30-05:30. Go, for example, is a fixed 4 hour window.
In addition, when IO schedules your EV charging slots it sometimes creates schedules that fall outside of the fixed, six hour window. If that happens your EV charging and all your household use in these extra-slots is also charged at off-peak rates.
I have frequently had schedules give me seven or more hours of off-peak rates. On one occasion, I had a total of ten hours of off-peak rates.

Am I eligible?
You need a smart meter and a compatible car and/or charger. Since you’re reading this here, I assume you’ve got or are thinking of getting a Tesla. IO works with the Tesla API to create the charging schedules. The advantage of this is that IO will work with any* home charger. If you have a charger with smart features, you need to disable them so that the charger acts as a dumb switch. IO will control everything via Tesla’s API to start and stop your charging.
*Even your granny charger - but you need to tell IO what the max throughput is when you go through setup so that it can work out your schedules properly.

Some of this sounds too good to be true.
Phantom drain caused by having smart charging enabled in the Octopus app has been fixed as of 30th August 2022. One small side effect appears to be that schedules sometimes take longer to appear in the app after plugging in.

Further questions (to be updated in the main thread body once the edit timer on this post expires)

I have two EVs, can I charge the other while on IO?

Not with IO scheduling the charging, but you can charge any other car in the fixed 23:30-05:30 off peak window or at any other time at peak prices.

What are the rates etc?
Octopus do a decent job of explaining the peak and off-peak rates along with contracts etc. Head over to their pages to discover that.

I asked for a target % of x, but I got less than x.
There are two or three reasons for this.

The first, most common reason, is that Tesla reports battery % differently depending on where you look. The API (that IO uses) reports the gross battery %. This is generally fixed but can fluctuate very slightly. The Tesla app shows usable %. Apps like Teslamate and Teslafi can display both. Quite often, there is a delta of 2-3% which may be down to battery temp or other factors. This usable % will often be recovered as the battery warms up during a drive.

Some users have reported charging % being way off, perhaps 10% or more. This could be down to an error in the onboarding process. Some of the charger database entries incorrectly assume the charger you are onboarding is the 11kW version, without actually saying so in the charger description. The Andersen A2 was an early example of this. If you suspect this may be the case, the easiest thing to do is go through the on-boarding again and choose "Generic 7.4kW charger". It won't affect your functionality on IO in any way.

Lastly, it has to be mentioned that occasionally IO just craps out. It may be down to a comms error, a server error at Octopus' end, or just reasons. IO is a beta product and it's wise to expect one or two quirks from time to time

Power trunk retrofit causing car awake

I did not see such issue anywhere but my 2020 model 3 has been warning for CC_a022 every few minutes since power trunk retrofit by Tesla. Car is charging fine but kept the car awake 24 by 7 which causes battery drain by 15 miles per day... I scheduled a service and was told this issue is under review by Tesla and no solution yet. How long has this issue been going on? I would think this issue been raised up quite a bit but surprised that I did not see any discussion about it.

High side skirts to hide rocker damage?

Whelp, I slowly was leaving a parking spot today and side swiped an unusually long (and high)curb today, and now the rocker panel is bent in quite smartly. Evidently the repair is utterly hideous ($10k+), as there’s no way it can be pulled out.

I hit the scrapes with some touch-up, but otherwise I think side skirts would fix this. However, the only ones I can find that are high enough to fully cover the substantial bend are $1400: Tesla Model 3 Carbon Fiber Side Skirts (Set of 2)

Does anybody know of any others that are very high up? There was a thread on this topic a year ago, but the company that the guy referred to doesn’t appear to make them anymore (Yofer).

Loose trunk trim piece

I removed the trunk panel piece and then I've been trying to get it into place. No clips are broken. Majority of the the trim piece stays except for the very right side of it . It just seems the right edge is not able to get back into place. I know this is a removable component but are you guys also finding difficulty resecuring it back on the right side? Is they're a good way to get this back?

Bush Engineering Roof Rack Challenge.

What I want is to avoid drilling through my rack to attach the taxicab top light. It also needs to be easily demounted without taking off the top cover. Bit of an ask.

Can leave hardware behind on the rack so long as the light comes off cleanly. Less is more as it's wind resistance I don't need. The light is a bloody sail all by itself.

I had a perfectly good custom fitting and I binned it because "I'll never need that again". I almost never do that! To buy or make another would cost more than I have in kitty right now and I need something right now.

Any cunning ideas? I have a couple but there's always a better one so I thought I would see what's out there.

Thinking caps on?My ideas at the bottom if you got nothing.

Three holes in the base plate doesn't need any more adding I think. Down the middle long ways. Could easily get away with using two.

It currently has three big magnets to stop it sailing off a metal roof. ( That's how I figured I didn't have any use for the vintage style clip in shoe gizmos, never figured on a glass roof )

Can anyone remember the allowable rack load off the top of their heads? Save me looking it up. I only remember it's less than I am used to.

My ideas revolve around a big tub of thermoplastic beads I already have. Thermoplastic is tough as nylon but melts in 60°C to work it.

A pair of top feet and a pair of bottom shoes that slide in.

Mount the bottom shoes with captive bolts that slide into the rail, washers and nyloc nuts. From memory square captive nuts usually slide into the rack rail with the end caps off but otherwise installed, accessories bolt down to the nuts. Doing it the other way so can use nylocs.

Could have them go around the rail and complete with screws and only need one bolt in the rail to stop any sideways wriggle action.

Or could thermal plastically ensure it can't leave as well without more heat but it would get a lot more bush looking.

Screw rotating flap to retain feet sideways.

I think any solution has to rely on the whole bar cross section resisting the toppling effect at 100kph not just bar inset bolts.

My rack has to wait for Tesla to install. After the tail light debacle I am not touching it even though it's a doddle to follow the instructions. So could someone please measure the clear width of bar at the narrow end on MY?

I want to give them my hardware to go on if it has to go on before installation. Ideally the design would not require that.

OEM HEPA filters done after 1~ year?

Had an interesting problem recently...

Canadian winter is coming around so I've started to use the heater a lot more. Thing is... the heater wasn't as strong as I remembered from last year. Odd. After some more experimenting, I found that the heat is perfectly good when using recirculate. This narrowed down the problem to just the intake (the big HEPA filters in the frunk area). I removed it, ran the heat with no filters, and it's perfect. I cleaned the filters (they had a bunch of dandelions stuck on them) with compressed air. Thought it'd be fixed. Put everything back in. Nope... The heat wasn't going. Then I tried with only the top filters (the one without the plastic cage housing thing). And the heat works.

Basically, the HEPA filters are choking the intake. I can't survive without heat right now so I'm currently running just the top filters (yes I know it'll bounce around but I can't do anything else).

Questions...

1. Is it normal for HEPA filters to get so restricted airflow in a year? Ontario had really bad air quality this year with the forrest fires I guess? Still, it seems a bit much for it to be completely dead within a year...
2. Is there any way to "blow out" these filters? I used compressed air and nothing. I believe these aren't washable but not 100% sure...
3. Tesla quoted $300~ for this job. BASENOR sells these filters for $90 on Amazon. It takes 10 minutes to install. Is there any reason not to use the BASENOR ones?

Thanks!

Master Thread: Definitive 14-50 NEMA Outlet Guide

Comparing the 2 outlets recommended by Tesla with the sub $10 big box model as well as the one I think you should buy

1. Hubbell 9450a
2. Bryant 9450fr
3. Cooper 5754n
4. Leviton 279-S00

The Hubbell and Bryant are far and away the superior product here and since Hubbell owns Bryant and these outlets were recently redesigned you can see from the pictures that there is almost no difference in these products, looks to me that it may only be the size of the allen screws and that is it.

The main reasons these are superior are, Lug boxes with V shape and the heavy copper strap that when tightening gathers the wire together instead of separating them and the fact that these both use 75 in. pounds of torque instead of 25 like the other 2, they both handle higher temperatures and have heavier one pc. power and ground contacts, there is no comparison to any other 14-50 Nema outlets.

The Cooper is good and much heavier than the Leviton but still falls short of the Hubbell and Bryant.

The Leviton unit is like a toy compared to others as it's really poorly built with smaller contacts, screw terminals without a pinch lock causing the wire to be stressed when tightened, just a cheap design.

Best part is now you don't have to pay $90 to $100 or more for the Hubbel as you can get the Bryant for $21
