Highland suspension on 2019 Model 3

Given how much better damped the new model 3 is, has anyone tried ordered the OEM tesla parts and put the highland suspension on the original model 3?

It seems fairly inexpensive, relative to what some of the coilovers cost. It looks like they sell the whole spring, coil and top hat as a unit for the front between $160 and $190 for the complete assembly. Could potentially be a great upgrade that is a stopgap between going full coilovers and potentially having clunk or binding you see on some of the entry level teins, etc.

Not sure if all the mounts are the same and that's what I'd hope to find out here, since parts are available to order.

Falling out of love with my Model Y AWD - Sell or Keep

Greetings!

Sad to say I’m falling out of love with my Austin built 4680/GigaPress 2023 Model Y AWD, and I’m afraid I may make a hasty emotional decision.

I bought a 2018 Model 3 RWD in November 2018, realizing build quality was “a work in progress”, and features like FSD were “yet to be determined”. My reasons for buying were the SC system and lack of any meaningful competition. I sold it 2 years later, frustrated by the less than stellar ride, noisy interior and ever present tire noise. Much of my decision was based on my wife’s newly acquired 2021 BMW 330e, a plug in hybrid with limited 20 mile range, but sufficient for her daily driving most of the time.

I admit to enjoying BMW cars over the years, having owned several including 3, 5, 8 series cars along with 2 i3s, one pure BEV, the other with the ReX range extender. My fondness for BMW is a combination of build quality, along with a very enjoyable driving experience. My preference is a sporty feel, good dynamics and, most importantly a superior suspension setup.

I replaced the 2018 Tesla with V8 Mustang GT, manual transmission, missing the joy of driving an engaging and entertaining car. I sold it, moving into the 2023 Model Y. I hoped that the new changes (4680 batteries, Austin GigaPress build, upgraded suspension, quieter interior and more) would be a good addition to the BMW 330e. The Y would be the daily driver, doing COSTCO/carrying duty, which running costs and upkeep at very attractive levels.

The reality is somewhat less fulfilling. The 4680 pack is very slow to SC, even compared to my 2018 Model 3. It takes nearly 50% longer to replenish the same distance as my model 3. It’s even slower compared to my friends 2022 Model Y LR AWD with 2170 batteries. It seems the 4680 battery pack throttles down very aggressively slowing charging dramatically.

More frustrating is the ride quality and noise levels. Initially they were better than my friend’s 2022 Y, but that was on a smooth surface on the test drive and slow speed driving locally. On concrete roads the noise is beyond annoying. Compared to mybwof’es BMW the Model,Y rides like a truck. And can someone please tell me why Tesla windshield wipers remain unusable? When they required them to be automatically on all the time when in autopilot they made it impossible to use the system without phantom wipes all the time. As you can likely tell, I’m not very happy.

Adding to the angst my car had misaligned doors (fixed, but still not fully resolved), numerous rattles/squeaks (also fixed, but not resolved) and noise levels are louder than when new (currently 14k miles). That’s why I bought the Austin car - promised better build quality and better battery pack/charging. Neither expectation was real. Resale value is horrible, with the list price dropping over $15k, and new cars benefitting from $7,500 additional tax credits. Carmax is offering less than half of the January 2023 list price on my car in trade with 14k miles. Tesla’s offer is lower!

So, now what? I still like Tesla, but I find that the dream is turning into a nightmare. I also admit that I still enjoy the feel of a ICE sports sedan, and sports cars in general. A manual transmission car (I briefly had a Miata) puts a smile on my face, despite being a senior with arthritis. The model S is fast, but not as engaging to drive in dynamic situation (heavy weight, “OK” suspension), as least for me. The new Model 3 performance seems promising, but I’ve not seen one yet to test. I did try the FSD free trial, and it is a step forward, but not a must have for me. Standard autopilot is fine.

I had several, other EVs and won’t buy any car that doesn’t work on Tesla’s NACS standard. Those cars will likely come online in 2025 models, but maybe not. The BMW 5 is about the size/performance I’d like, but I can’t find an equivalent Tesla. The S should be the answer, but it doesn’t light my fire - seats are too low, A pillar too close to our preferred seating position. My wife and I are “vertically challenged”. I’ve also had friends sell their S cars due to lots of issues (most were 2022 and older cars).

Help talk me off the ledge. I’m afraid I’ll wake up with a Corvette in my garage If I can’t figure this out!

Thanks, I feel better.

Model S 2012 Charging Problems:

Hey all-

I have been driving my model S frequently since fixing it up (see previous posts on battery and drive unit fiascos). Everything has been great until today, when I attempted to use a supercharger (a different location than what I typically use). I plugged the charger in and everything worked initially, however the miles/hr charge rate seemed high (it went to 350 and then dropped slowly), and after several seconds I got errors for "unable to charge" and "remove charger and try again" and "service required." I was unable to charge, the light at the charge port was red and the lock tab was up, and I got a few errors codes when I checked in service move (CHG_w062_FCPosCntrWelded and CHG_f065_FCCntrRationalitycheck). I am still able to drive, however I can no longer open the charge door. I tried a soft reset and pulling the 12v battery and fireman's loop to hard reset the car to see if it would fix things, but it did not work.

I am trying to troubleshoot now and figure out what happened. I suspect this different supercharger dumped too much electricity into the charge box and damaged the charging unit, but I am not sure. Is it possible that a fuse was blown on the inside and needs to be changed? I am posting this because I have seen little to no information on these issues. As with previous threads, I will update on this issue and what the solution ultimately is. Where are the fast charge contactors (rear hv junction box?), and how can I check if they are welded?

Heat pump compressor short cycling

Hey all,

After 3 months of owning a Tesla Y 2023 I’ve been really struggling with the HVAC energy usage.

After talking with the service technicians at Tesla the first time they convinced me there’s nothing wrong, but there’s definitely something wrong.

A different service centre here in Sydney has looked at it and showed me another Tesla Y service menu where the compressor short cycles too, so I walked away thinking it’s normal. But it’s just not.

The compressor short cycles, as in, it turns off and on again repeatedly, sometimes 3 times a minute, sometimes once every few minutes.

This makes the cabin temperature fluctuate and feels uncomfortable, uses excessive energy and puts abnormal wear on the compressor.

Maybe this is how they’re designed, I don’t know, this is why I’m here, to learn about this and figure it out.

As far as I’m aware, there is not a single compressor on the planet designed to short cycle and that would normally indicate a problem with the system, such as ice building up on the condenser, tripping a safety mechanism to turn the compressor off until it’s safe to run again.

I’ve watched more than a few vids from HVAC school and read so many articles but without tools, experience and more research I’m still a bit lost on the subject.

Can a few people please chime in and take a look at your service menu, under refrigerant system, and tell me if your compressor is turning off and on again repeatedly?

Or does anyone have any clue what’s going on?

There is a low voltage battery error within the service menu, maybe that’s related to the problem?

France, Spain, Portugal, Italy toll tag offer

Just in case anyone is heading to those countries, I happened to come across a toll tag on offer today.
Free registration, delivery, activation. Offer ends soon, I get nothing from this, just thought it might be helpful. I've signed up for one as a spare, plus I didn't add Italy to my Ulys tag when I ordered and but if a faff to add it.

Just make sure that if you sign up with an account such as Revolut, you need to add a Euro account. See my other thread on that.
Hope it's useful to someone.

Ability to turn off passenger vent for refresh Model S?

Test drove a new Model S today.

One of my wife's biggest complaints in my '23 Model 3... no ability to turn off the vents for the front seat passenger. Apparently no amount of 'vent redirection' is satisfactory for her.

I tried this in the new Model S by pressing/holding the air stream animation, but nothing seemed to change.

I went back inside the Tesla showroom where they had a '24 Model 3 Performance. This model was able to turn off the passenger vents with a long press on the air stream animation.

Was I doing something wrong on the Model S, or is this still not a feature?

Lifted Model Y Owners: Report!

I have a Model Y on order and I'm going to be lifting it and adding slightly taller tires (currently thinking 55r18) to deal with snow and fire roads. I ski and mountain bike a lot and both of these are pretty common use cases for me. I've found some brethren on here that have done similar things but I'd love to hear how it's going after lifting. Do you regret the lift? Do you have issues with the taller profile tires with respect to navigation for example due to speedometer error? How bad has your efficiency hit been?

MVIMG_20180111_130759.jpeg

Picture for context on the kind of day I'd love to still be able to do with the Y. My 20 year old manual subaru outback is a champ with snow tires on, hoping the Model Y can take it's place after a lift + tires.

Gillette WY supercharger closed on 6/13/24!

After full charge in Sheridan WY headed west toward Deadwood SD we got an alert message that the next supercharger in Gillette WY was CLOSED and navigation sent us further on to Spearfish SD where we barely made it with reduced speed. Had we charged less than full, as suggested by the nav system, we'd have not made it.

Having never experienced a station closing AFTER we were en route, the question is: Why did this happen?

I suppose we can check in the car if it's back up for the return trip. But the idea that it could just close again before we get there is troubling!

And a warning to others that you could just randomly wind up without supercharging anywhere and anytime!

4680 Updates, Main Thread

Let’s use this thread to track Tesla’s amazing new battery tech in their 4680s and lithium refinery.

Teslas goal is an optimal range dry cell. The number 4680 is named from the mm dimensions.

The past:

Gen 1 early 2023
MY RWD Austin Gen 1 4680s ended use by Sept 2023. Not great charging curve in Gen 1. This was a wet cell.

Gen 2 are in the Cybertruck. Gen 2 has better range and charging curve. The MY RWD is now using 2170s. This 4680 is a NMC 811 chem of 80% nickel 10% Lithium 10% cobalt. There is info that this gen is currently moving to 955 chem.

There is a lot of pressure to eliminate cobalt.
LFP batteries have a big advantage of no cobalt.
There are many negative implications of using cobalt

Gen 3a might end up being a hybrid dry cell, a percentage wet, and chem of 973 moving to less cobalt. Advances in this gen could have another 10% increase in range. We expect this gen by mid 2024.

Gen 3b a fully dry cell could be another 10% boost in range to be delivered late 2024 or early 2025.

The lithium refinery is to be online this year.
The TX cathode plant is coming online this year.

From
The standpoint of full battery vertical integration, no one is as determined and potentially successful, outside of China, is Tesla.
Tesla is creating a USA blueprint for GM and Ford to follow.

As the IRA raises battery requirements higher, Tesla will allow for the max credits.

Please correct and aEd any all info above.

Was provisionally approved for car on 5/30 was given vin and delivery window 6/8-6/17 but am confused about financing

After being conditionally approved it asked for proof of residence. I uploaded a picture of my bank statement. After getting message though app that it needed to be a utility I uploaded a gas bill online account screen shot. Since doing that I got the vin number and a change of delivery date from May-June that came on May 30 to June 8-17 on Monday June 3 but it still says continue the tasks to not delay delivery. Only task was adding the proof of residence there is no way to add an additional one like a water bill so I am confused.

I called finance on Tuesday explained to the who said someone just needs to check a box or something and they are busy he said he could see someone had checked the order I guess when I was being told to change from bank statement to utility bill.

If anyone has any similar experiences or advice. Please let me know credit check was done by capital one finance if that makes any difference but got that by checking my credit report not from any Tesla app or agent information.

TIA,
Anthony

M3P in inventory

Look what I found at the “dealership” today. Came in overnight. I had to buy it!😎 Now I have to decide what to do with my 2021 M3P which is getting a new HV battery under warranty.

Poor wifi reception

Hi! My 2019 M3 has always had issues connecting to my wifi network but its always worked (albeit with just one or two bars) when parked closest possible to the house with the right rear mirror (where I understand the antenna is) facing the house. Strangely enough my other stuff like iPhone shows full strength a hundred or so feet away and works just fine even farther, both 2.4 and 5 GHz.
For the latest FSD update however it took some 30 hrs to download.... Going from no reception to very slow (couple kb/s) to 200 kb/s.

Any ideas anyone please? I can't easily permanently move the router closer to the car but could I guess buy a long ethernet cable and just move it when an update is available...

Thanks

Bo

USA MY RWD has soft limited LR battery!

Just picked up my MY RWD today. It has been already established that it does not have the LFP battery pack, but there was some speculation on whether it was a soft limited LR battery or a new smaller capacity NCA battery. From what I am seeing, I'm pretty sure that it is the Long Range battery software limited down to 260 rated miles.

At the supercharger at 99% charge it was still charging at a 35kW rate. As we know, a battery actually charged to 99% would be charging slowly, not anywhere near 35kW. Also, at 100% charge, there is no limited regen warning, indicating that the battery can absorb the full regen charge.

Charge rates that I managed to note: (battery was only preconditioned for about 10 minutes in 30F temps, so it can probably do better)
80% - 53kW
85% - 51kW
90% - 45kW
97% - 37kW
99% - 35kW

For MY RWD owners this is awesome news. When charged to a displayed 100%, the actual battery is around 80%. This means 100% of the range can be used without concern about battery degradation just like the LFP battery in the M3 RWD. And better than a LFP pack, you can charge quickly to 100% when Supercharging. Really, the RWD is almost as good as the LR in practical range since one will not often charge above 80% in the LR.

Some other data points:
  • The MY RWD weighs 4,154lbs and the MY LR weighs 4,416lbs, a difference of 262lbs. The front motor unit alone weighs over 200lbs, so you would expect a greater weight difference if the physical battery was smaller.
  • The Shanghai LFP MY RWD weighs 3,920lbs. With a similar battery capacity, you would expect the NCA MY RWD to weigh signicantly less than this, since LFP is less energy dense.

Public charger efficiency

Just wondering, if I have to use public chargers while traveling, what kind of efficiency can I expect?

And do public L2 chargers typically deliver the same amount of charge/range as a L2 SC? If, say, an EA charging station is delivering 150kW, is it giving me the same amount of charge (or miles of range) in a given time as a SC station with equivalent kW? (Yeah, I'm no electricity whiz.)

Supercharger - Bastrop, TX

Possible filing for Supercharger at the Buc-ee's #28 located at 1700 State HWY 71 Bastrop, TX 78602. Completion date slated next year on 10/24/2022.

Not sure if there is enough info in the filing to suggest supercharger, but it has a similar description to the Abbott and Hutto supercharger filings and a design firm located in Palo Alto.
